Lock Screen Notification

When I get a new text message, I get a nifty icon in the middle of the screen, that I just have to slide it left and it takes me to the new message.
Is there any way to make other things like email notifications etc do the same thing?

I think Gmail has that icon. Dunno about any other email service

I posted a similar question in Quora: What can I do so, when my phone is in the lock slide screen, I can unlock and open the latest notification received? Stock Android Ice Cream Sandwich gives me the option to choose how the screen should appear when you press the power/unlock button. If I turn on my screen, I have the option to unlock the screen or open the camera app. Is there a way to give it a third option to open the latest notification you received?
