Assuming that phone is photographed with a case on it, I can't imagine it would provide protection against anything but light scratches. Certainly not drops.
I have ordered a DuroCase with a kickstand. Should come in within a day or two. It was worth trying for under ten bucks, and appears to have nice protective rubbery corners for drops.

** EDIT **
So the case finally arrived yesterday. For what I'm looking for, and especially for ten bucks, it's perfect.
The case adds a little heft to the phone. For me, this is a good thing. The Moto X turned out to be too thin for me. I never felt like I could grip it properly. This adds soft rubbery grip points right where I want to grip it, either hand. The cutout exposes the little "M" dimple on the back and makes it deeper and easier to use as an actual grip point. It puts a little flat bit on the back so the phone lies securely on flat surfaces, while still rounding up a bit for ergonomics on the sides.
The "Starry Night" artwork is sprayed on, and not a decal like I feared, so that should hold up for a while. The kickstand, while a little hard to open and certainly not super strong, has a reinforcement bit that slides out and is extremely stable in both portrait and landscape configurations.
And the corners have thick, soft rubber which should really help with drops. Not that I'm going to test it. The front bit has a nice deep recess but still manages to feel secure while not blocking access to any part of the screen, so I can set it face-down without worrying about anything on the surface scratching the screen or getting into the speakers or whatnot.
It does push the limits of my neoprene holster, but it fits if I work it in a bit and stretch the cover down over it.
