I think trying to compare the sales of the Moto X to Apple and Samsung is way out of its league. Moto X isn't trying to compete with those, rather Moto X is competing with the likes of HTC, Nokia, etc. Motorola doesn't see themselves as a Samsung/apple, selling 1 or 2 high quality phones. Rather, Motorola has many different high quality phones that they sell or will sell (Droid Lineup, Shamu, Moto X) Economies of scale benefits them when looking at the combined sales, because I feel their phones sport a lot of the same power train and similar chassis. This allows them to spread some of their engineering/overhead expenses over the different models. I also believe that they will come to be known as THE company for budget phones.
As with for example cars, companies like to test their technology on higher end models (Some models companies even lose money on!), even though their budget models bring in the most profit. The budget phones can help Motorola subsidize their tech advances that they implement in the higher end models.
I believe Moto is a very strong company currently, and I hope that Lenovo does not jeopardize this by focusing on the high profit margin budget phones. It is only fair, when comparing sales, to compare the whole Moto Lineup to Samsung or Apple. But if you want to know, will everyone and their grandmother own a Moto X? No, but that is the way I like it. I like my Moto X because it is a unique phone that speaks to my image.
On a side note, I feel like the best way to see if the Moto X is gaining popularity is to look at the availability of accessories from 3rd parties. From that viewpoint, it would seem that the 2014 model is more popular than the 2013.
