Moto X - How well do you think it's selling?

What you are describing is that the Moto X is a niche phone. I agree with that point, and I think that is exactly what the Moto X is. If that is the goal that's fine. But we keep hearing from pundits about how the Moto X should be more than a niche phone. What gives?

It definitely feels like a phone that has kind of a cult following. Those who love Android know what a Moto X is and what it can do. Those who just want to play on the surface of Android and not customize it too much (or who don't care about fast updates) go with Samsung, HTC, etc.

I don't have a Moto X but i do own a Moto E. And Moto E is the best selling phone in its category in India along with Lumia 520/530.Same with Moto G.Its mostly because of word of mouth rather than marketing which is non existant.Moto E,G,X 2013 and X 2014 are hands down the best phones in their respective segments of $100,$200,$300 and $500 respectively. Moto just needs a heavy budget on marketing.

I went into 1 Verizon store and they told me that they had not sold any. it kind of made sense because no one was standing over it to look at it. Also, the rep did not know much.

Went to another Verizon store and had a similar situation. I think people look at and see 16GB. no removable battery, no SD card and no custom colors and they walk away. Unless you know about Motomaker, that conversation never comes up.

I don't think the average person cares about a removable battery or an SD card slot. All they care about is if the phone will last them a day. Most also get the cheapest version of the phone which is usually 16GB. This is my experience with everyone I know, except myself. The removable battery and SD card slot is for the enthusiasts like us and for the extreme case users (traveling salesman that's on his phone constantly and wants a spare battery to swap out, etc.). And if you take another example, the iPhone (the most single popular phone based on sales) has had a non-removable battery since the beginning.

True but its sad that the 2 Verizon stores that I visited did not seem to know much about them nor was the display getting much attention on the 3 times I visited each store. I was the only one looking at the units. Everyone else was going to the HTC, Iphone and Samsung. I think only certain individuals would appreciate the unit and not an everyday joe shmo.

I've had similar experience with my local VZW store. The main difference is while I was looking around and over hearing the conversations, no matter what the customer wanted, they tried to steer them to the iPhone. As good as the iPhone is, it's not for everyone.

Yeah, but I think Verizon has purchase commitments and volume discounts, so they probably give better commissions for iPhone sales.

I think that's true of both Apple and Samsung. Notice the pattern: reps know nothing about any other flagships than those two. Maybe HTC... The lack of training is a problem that comes from the top. And the lack of marketing materials for this phone is a problem that is partly Motorola's fault. I expect that when this phone goes for free on contract that it will get a bigger push. That said, I think that it probably is selling better than last year's, but not remarkably so.

Here are a couple of interesting articles.
Motorola Sold 1.6 Million Smartphones In India: Challenges Lava And Karbonn

iPhone 6 vs. Moto G: Can the high-end smartphone market last forever? | BGR

I have a tendency to agree with the second article. The dazzle of the do all high end smartphone that lasts for two year will sour with the consumer.
I still am blown away with the wide acceptance of shelling out $500 for a subsidized 128gb IPhone 6 plus. I suspect sales will taper off fast in the coming months.
$300 subsidized for a Galaxy note seemed to be a stretch.

I really love my x don't get me wrong. But the fact that At&T doesn't even have the motomaker pin cards in the stores really cripples it. Being able to customize your phone is one of its strongest selling points. WHY doesn't att one of the biggest phone carriers doesn't support this? I couldn't even order my phone cause of this

Since the new Moto X is now one dollar (on contract) at Amazon and Best Buy I'm guessing it's not selling as fast as they would like.

Well when you release 3-4 devices within the same month it should have been expected. If the specs had been in line with the N6 it might have done better. But kept the customization and Moto X software features.

Simple. BC of marketing by phone manufacturers. Samsung and Apple are the only 2 companies that spend heavily on marketing material for their devices.

Its always been an Apple vs Samsung battle. Even in courts and lawsuits. One always tries to trump and out do the other... We as consumers are subliminally brainwashed to believe those are the 2 manufacturers to spend our money on..

As a wireless carrier, why bother with the rest? Sales figures and statistics show other manufacturers will be a poor sell. Why not stock up majority of your stock on the popular items. Aka Apple and Samsung. And make huge profits off of that?

Meanwhile like the others had said, Moto is a niche brand. Just like Sony and etc. Only the techies and the ones willing to think outside the box will appreciate that there are other great manufacturers out there. There are phones, not to mention, great devices other than Apple and Samsung. But the world will never appreciate it. BC we're led to believe otherwise.

If it's not selling well I wonder if they have another Cyber Monday sale like last year where they sold it off-contract for $349. If they do, I'm definitely going to buy one.

Not really on sale for a $1, your just getting it for $99 off retail pricing. still a good deal.

This is where the whole phone price deception begins.

I tried to be savvy when I bought my Moto X 32GB pure. This was how I did it. I got the phone, micro charger and case. $650 (ish)
0 financing for 18 months (free money)through Motorola credit my payment is $36. Since I'm no longer on contract, at&t drops $15 a month of my bill. So really the phone is costing me $21 a month

Option 2 was the AT&T next plan at $33 a month for 18 months for the 16 gb locked phone and back on contract adding back on contract for $15 a month.

Option 3 was full contract for 2 years $100 down.
$.99 on contract is a deal as long as the base phone is ok for you.

I just don't get this reasoning. The vast majority of the phone buying public don't care about specs the way us geeks do. For example I have a hard time believing someone in a carrier store somewhere decided not to buy a Moto X because it has the 801 vice 805 processor.

But due to the way the device was launched it WAS launched toward the geek in us. I agree the N6 specs IS over kill but when you buy a device at full price then you always want more. The Moto X is a great device and I like it. However I still wish it had the internals of the N6 in this form factor. Its like you! Its the geek in my speaking. :)

They don't seem to be advertising it at all. And the ads on youtube seem very cheaply done. They aren't entertaining at all.

I got mine two weeks ago. I can echo what others have said, the Verizon reps are totally clueless when it comes to this phone, I had to show the guy 'helping' me the features of the phone, he had no clue. A couple was standing next to me while I was doing it with other representative getting talked into the Galaxy S5,when the lady took interest in what I was showing my guy, they walked out of the store shortly before I did with two moto X's

It's a Damn shame this phone and the original just aren't advertised enough

True. If they offered a 64GB model I would consider it again. Just pulled the trigger on another OPO to tide me over until the Nexus 6 is easily available.
