MR2 OTA Update (1.66.605.2) (Leak)

Installed smoothly
GPS Moe Accurate
My Verizon works

Strangely Market is older verion so no push for apps

Now all we need is a root method

My market updated pretty quickly after set-up. Give it a few minutes if you've just done it.

You have to click on the link in the OP and download it. Rename it like it says to on the page you downloaded it from. Put it on your phone's SD card (main directory, no sub folder), then boot the phone into hboot (power and volume down at the same time when the phone is off). Then follow the on-screen instructions.

I'm not techy at all, but I remember doing this with my G2 and it was a rather painless process.

Let me ask you this: will it wipe the phone's data?

This thread has been full of awesomeness! Thanks everyone :)

Yes, there is even a warning in the download box that it will wipe your data. You'll still have all your music, pictures and stuff like that on your SD Card afterwards and the market is great for re-downloading all your apps when you are done but you will lose all your text messages. That's really all I lost and I never save them anyway so I didn't care. I really didnt lose anything. Just have to reset up all my screen and accounts.

I hate losing my game data. After the rebooting problem, I did a factory reset and I lost sooo much data (3-stars in ALL angry bird levels). Since then, I've beat all of pvz and I DON'T want to have to do it again. Sadness. Guess I'll have to wait for the OTA.

Well, this is basically the OTA, you're probably going to lose your data one way or the other...at least that is my guess.

I feel like they would figure out a way to not lose your data, but screw it. I don't feel like waiting. These issues need to be resolved. Gonna do it!

OTA's don't lose your data... this is not an OTA... this will however lose your data.

So, hold on a sec... Let me make sure I'm understanding this. This OTA isn't actually "out", yet, and the people here that are running it downloaded a leaked version, or something, right? If I'm not rooted, and I wait for the actual OTA on June 15th, will it still completely wipe my phone? I really don't want to have to redownload all my apps, especially because I have a number of games, and I don't want to lose my saved data... :/

No.

Notes from the original post notes and GPS question...

Increased 4G Signal Strength: Was at 4G / 1-2 Bars all night prior, now at 3 bars sitting in the same spot...

Does anyone know if the 3G signal strength is better? I am in a 3G rural area and the TB does not have as good a signal as my old BB Tour did. I am not unhappy with the switch, I just drop calls now in areas that I use to never drop.

The hbo go app doesn't work anymore and a couple others like the Discover app. The new market won't let you install apps that aren't compatible with your phone.

I am personally going to wait until the official OTA. I had the HTC Droid Eris prior to this and did the same thing about a year ago where i installed leaked versions and could not get the official downloads and could not rooted the phone so i was frustrated for like 2 months for jumping the gun lol. If i have to wait another week i am going to this time :).
There is no straight answer if you will lose all the data or not once you install this one or the official one. I think you can just move the game apps onto the SD card and the saved data will transfer into the SD and once you restore them your 3 stars will be there lol.

I understand your concern. The whole "improve signal strength" bullet is way too vague. No way to tell what it is actually gonna address. I mean, the TBolt has something like 6 Radios. So what "signal strength" is gonna be improved? I think they wanted to keep it vague.

I jumped the gun only because I'm about to take a very long road trip and wanted to make sure my Google Nav worked flawlesly without reboots. Otherwise I would have waited for the official OTA. Everything seems to be working fine though, just hope I didnt cause any future problems.

Is this update the same that will be sent as an OTA? Meaning, will this screw up anything in the future?

Also, someone mentioned some apps aren't working after the update (i.e. HboGo and Discover). Can anyone confirm this?

All the apps I use are still working just fine. I don't use either of the above mentioned apps though.

This is one of the strangest things. I've put the file (PG05IMG.zip) in my root access folder and yet my phone will not recognize the file. I have done this on other Android devices and had no such issue. Any ideas?

Make sure that if your Windows settings has "hide extensions for known file types" enabled that you didn't actually name the file "PG05IMG.zip.zip"

(FWIW, I still can't believe that's a default Windows setting)

So can us unrooted folks install this and not mess up any future OTAs that come out? I'm about to take a road trip so If I can fix the 3G rebooting issues I'm having before I leave, that would be awesome!

Well, my impatience got the better of me...it is loading as I type. Hopefully it works!

No, this is a signed RUU, leaving you fully in compliance with VZW/HTC regarding your system state for future updates.

This is an RUU with the update already included on it...it is NOT an OTA update.

OTA is simply "over the air" -- when officially pushed by Verizon, this update will be available OTA, and, based on past OTA updates, it will be in a format that allows your phone to install it without losing your data.

If you want the leaked version now, your only option is to download this full RUU and install it manually, which will wipe all data.

In the end, you'll still be left with the same software version and radio...it's just a matter of how you get there.

slightly off topic, but germaine, I want to install this, but when I connect my device to my PC, I cannot get it show up in My Computer as a drive, it shows up as "E" but I cannot access it. I know I could do this before the OTA, any thoughts?
