My Rant on the iPhone 5s

How are you using NFC on ATT ?

I use it mostly on T-Mobile, but have used it on AT&T. I have a Nexus 4 that can use Google Wallet regardless of carrier. I also use NFC for other purposes with the NFC tags. Rarely do I exchange information between devices and when I do, they're usually all my devices.

I have a Nexus 4; it never lags. It's that Apple fan mindset that Samsung = Android, ugh.

No, it's simply a stark reflection of reality that for all my friends and colleagues at least, the overwhelming majority are either using iphones, Note2, S3 or S4 phones. One uses a Z10, while another 1 or 2 uses HTC One. And amongst them, only the iphone gets any form of updates pushed to them wirelessly.

Nobody uses a nexus phone here because it simply isn't available outside of the US. So for all intents and purposes, Samsung is Android.

You seem to understand. I am just putting it out there for the people who believe that they are safe and secure now because of the fingerprint scanner. Apple made it sound much more secure (and I get it ? it was their time to shine yesterday and all tech companies stretch the truth a little) than it really is.

I worry about you guys :)

For a user like me who disabled passcode lock on my iphone, yes, it does represent improved security. :)

Dude, who cares if rooting is as easy as jailbreaking these days. The idea of needing to hack into my iPhone just so I can get the system updates from Apple that are SUPPOSED to be on phone is just flat out ridiculous.

I will say this much. I felt like my life changed when I got my OG Motorola Droid. I was previously using a Blackberry Bold and I thought that Android was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I stuck with Androids through a few iterations and picked up the iPhone 4s when my contracts were up for work related reasons. Here, IT absolutely insists on iPhones or blackberry. I actually upgraded to the Galaxy S4 a few months ago (my father who has never owned a smartphone before had an upgrade so I used his and gave him my 4s) and will likely be going back to the 5s when it launches as he wants the S4 due to the larger screen.

You have to understand that not everyone is completely engrossed in their phones technology. To me, a phone is simply a means to get things done. It carries my appointments, and meetings. I use it to keep in touch with people and I use it to read the news, browse the web and use apps that are relevant to my field of work. Very little time is spent tinkering with the phone for tinkering sake. I did that a bunch with my Android phones, just because there was so much that was available to customize. I rooted them, used custom roms, etc. but in the end, I never found much real world utility for that much of it. The 64 bit thing doesn't mean much to the casual user, other than the knowledge that their phone is somewhat future proofed. I'm also not sure how you can really call most of Apple's upgrades "gimmicky", most of the "features" on the S4 are far more "gimmicky" than anything Apple has put out, not to mention, a lot of them are just not well executed, nor are they particularly useful. I thought that Siri would be the most useless thing in the world when I got my iPhone, but I love having it, and yes, it works better than S voice. Having used both, I have zero qualms about saying that. But as far as the S4 goes on a day to day functional level, I don't have much issue in using it, and if I cared about having a huge screen, then I would probably go for it. But as far as a phone that simply works well and that I'm comfortable with, I still prefer the iPhone. I don't really care about screen size, I like having a compact phone. Watching videos or movies on a slightly larger phone screen makes very little difference to me as I would rather go home and watch videos or movies on a giant flat screen TV. A phone not being intrusive matters more, and I simply find that a phone the size of hte S4 just gets in the way at times. Again, I do like to figure out how to use the ins and outs of my phone, and I suppose with iPhones there is less tinkering that I can do it, but for day to day usage (which is far more important to me), I find that the iPhone just has a smoother user experience and is lower maintenance. And a better experience (at least for me) that 95% of the time outweighs what I wish it had the other 5% of the time. Also, I have been having iMessage withdrawal ever since giving my 4s up. Having text messages from other iPhone users sync to my iPad and MBP makes life way easier, and given the number of people who have iPhones, this is actually a major deal.

I don't really have the time to read through all of that now so I skimmed the first few sentences. Yeah, it's a little ridiculous, but not hard to do. That's just something about android that can't be changed at the moment. The only way for direct quick updates is a Google edition or Nexus device, that's just how it works. It sounds like you enjoy the Apple experience. Just get an iPhone then! There's no need for a wall of text to explain something as simple as "yeah I've been on both, I like iPhone better". Short and to the point makes it a lot more likely I'll give you a reply for future reference.

No surprises.

Apple has been falling behind lately. A fingerprint-scanner won't change that.

Most users don't care about "64-bit..blah blah blah". All they care about is how fast it is in the real world and how long the battery lasts for.

Speaking of battery, the battery in the 5S isn't bigger than the 5, nor has it's battery life improved.

It'll be a nice upgrade for my dad and sis, who both have a 4S, but I'll be sticking to my beloved HTC One.

Motorola? HTC? LG? There's more than just Samsung lol

What? It simply is. It's available not only in the US but in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, South Korea, Spain, and the United Kingdom. And that's only counting Google Play availability; carriers sell it in even more places (for example, I know Chetan lives in New Zealand and has an N4).

So for all intents and purposes, Samsung is Android.
Why, because they sell the most Android phones? That's ridiculous. Have you seen how heavy their changes to Android are on their phones? Samsung is hardly Android.

For what it's worth, I've seen more Nexus 4s than Galaxy S4s or Galaxy Note 2s. The only Android phone that I've seen more than the Nexus 4 is the Galaxy S3.

That's downright false.

OTA's are pretty much the standard. It's weird to have to use a third party solution like Kies, etc.

Because for my circle of friends and colleagues at least, Samsung phones are the most commonly used Android phones, plus Samsung advertises quite heavy here in Singapore. People have no idea what is stock Android. They just know that Samsung uses Android. That it's modified with a skin is irrelevant.

Most people don't use Kies. On the Samsung phones you can update OTA as well. I don't know a single person where I live who has said they use Kies or have had a good experience with it

You do realize that every post that you've made in this thread, along with the entire premise of this thread basically comes down to "I like Android better"?

Still, Samsung is not android like you referred to it as. It's been completely customised by Samsung and it's basically a whole new os. Calling Samsung android the way you referred to it is like calling a tank a car.

I am not saying it is Android. I am simply describing the phenomenon I observe amongst my friends that they see Touchwiz as Android (and I believe many others do as well). They are not tech-savvy users, so I didn't see the point of trying to explain the distinction or correcting their misconception, since it really makes little difference at the end of the day. For them, they have a larger screen phone that lets them do the things they want, it's good enough. :)

Yes I do realize that. I do like android better, I'm not hiding that. That's kind of why this thread was made in the first place. Where are you going with this exactly? Seems sort of irrelevant

It OUGHT to be good enough, so why isn't it? I like the conversations that sound like, "hey that's cool! mine can do this too!", instead of, "oh yeah, well your phone can't do this!". The enthusiasm doesn't have to be defensive, jealousy or antagonistic.

Maybe you misunderstood my point. I am simply saying that for my friends at least, they don't really care about what OS their phone uses. They got the various Samsung phones primarily for the larger screen. They know it runs Android, don't care that it's touchwiz, and are happy with their phones because it does everything they need it to do. We are all cool people who have better things to do with our time than compare specs and ridicule others for supposedly using an "inferior" phone.

It was never about Google vs Apple, but about getting the phone which best suits your individual needs. :)
