Netflix App works on rooted Optimus S with a quick hack

Ok... these are my new directions.....

Change the following lines in your build.prop

ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC

Reboot your cell..

NOW... go into about phone.. if it shows that you have the HTC you have done the edit correctly.

Once this is verified.. go to the MARKET and download the Netflix app. For some reason this one works. The one from the other threads doesnt work on my cell. But the legit market one does when u have it set as HTC. WORKS 100% for me

The only difference between the 2 apps is the one on the market is a newer updated version of the apk file

Sorry for the newbie question, but how do you edit build.prop? I see the lines that need to be changed, but I am unclear on how I actually go in and change them. Thanks.

use a root explorer... edit and save build.prop from /system/build.prop. save and exit. If it worked you can go back and view it and see the changes... Then reboot system. Double check ABOUT PHONE to see the changes took affect after reboot

*** I like using Root Explorer

Good News, Everyone: Trick The Netflix App Into Thinking Your Rooted Device Is Supported | Android News, Reviews, Apps, Games, Phones, Tablets, Tips, Mods, Videos, Tutorials - Android Police

Above link has a slick way to get Netflix working on our Optimus S phones. I tried it out and it works great! I've streamed 20 minutes or so and am convinced it works well.

Here's the meat of it (beware, it might break things):

Root is required. Make a Nandroid backup!

Change the following lines in /system/build.prop to make your phone think it is a HTC G2:
1. ro.product.model=HTC Vision
2. ro.product.manufacturer=HTC

Install the netflix apk (if you haven’t already)

Enjoy
Could you update your directions to mine? This is working and the first post can be confusing.... IMO

NEVERMIND.. IMA MAKE A THREAD

for some reason either way makes my swype freak out and think it's installed on the wrong type of phone. and is reduced to limited functionality.

after editing the build prop swype thinks you are trying to use a keyboard configured for the optimus on the type of phone you changed the build prop to
