Re: 6P bend and scratch test, not good viewing!

Not sure if this was mentioned earlier but:
The guy that bent the phone concentrated all of his force it one spot right below the power button on the back of the phone, the weakest point for any phone with a side button.

Everyone else that uploaded a "bend test" for the phone was concentrating all of their force the the back center of the phone, the strongest part.

Just like an egg, squeeze it the right way and it's almost impossible to break. Apply pressure to it's weak points and it will crack open with very little force. Basically holds true for anything, everything has a weak spot, you just need to know where it is to apply the right amount of pressure.

Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

Pictures of Graphite 6P

I am absolutely gutted. I noticed today that the paint at the top of the visor is getting worse and worse. It started with one small spec which I could live with.

Now more and more small paint chips are appearing.

I would like to make it clear:
- I have not dropped the phone
- I have only had this phone for 2 days
- I have treated it with a huge amount of care
- I have not had it in my pocket with keys or coins

If it's bothering you request a replacement. Not going to affect the functionality of the device... Slap a thin TPU case on it and continue on... if you rock your device naked full time you are going to eventually get nicks and dings in the paint/body... but if you are OCD and it's killing you I'd completely understand returning it...

Shouldn't flake off that much this soon.... but unless there were issues with functionality I personally wouldn't worry about it at all...

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

I'm in two minds right now.

I almost want to send it back and get a fresh one because now I know that the paint comes off so easily I will put a case on straight away.

However, the phone performs very well and I have no other problems. So I may end up with a worse one!

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

This is the exact reason I didn't get graphite. I knew scratches would be more visible and paint would chip. Return it and go with aluminum.

Use a sharpie to cover the silver showing through and then throw a case on it. Unless there is something wrong, like the paint is peeling from all over the body of the phone, I wouldn't bother. Reminds me way back when when the Blackberry storm first came out, people were sending them back for a very minor cosmetic thing that only a person that was very anal would find but the phone worked flawlessly (which was rare because of the stupid tactile screen it had) only to get a phone that was flawless in looks but had some technical problems with it.

lol I love the sharpie idea.

Yeah I'm thinking the same, plus my device works flawlessly in every other area.

Personally, I'd replace it. It sounds as if there was an issue when the put the coating on and that it will likely continue to be an issue. From the way it sounds, I'm thinking the case my rub some of the coating off.

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

It's not paint, it's anodized aluminum. Looks like the anodized layer is chipping away, which makes me think there was a problem with the anodization process. I would say you should request a replacement, but it's up to you.

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

Exact reason I purchased the silver one. My experience with coated/paintes metal electronic devices hasn't been good.

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

I am having the exact same problem with my graphite. The phone has developed scratches around the camera lens window. I've taken care of the phone but not had it on a case. It seems the anodizing near the glass isn't as good a the rest of the back. I don't know what the exact cause is, but I guarantee others will experience of as time goes on. It isn't a huge deal but IMHO, while the 6p looks premium, it isn't built as well as the iPhone or even Samsung phones. Huwai did a commendable job, but if you read the article on how they got to build the 6p, you can see they didn't have a whole lot of time. Apple has the benefit of a year long cycle and the ability to focus resources refining the phone just a bit more every year. With a quick turnaround around 6p, some compromises were made. With Google's shifting around who builds the nexus you lose that slower, deliberate evolution of the hardware. Huwai has done the best job I've seen so far with a nexus and also managed to keep up with demand

I was in the same boat. It came with 2 chips to the frame, but the device worked great. Screen was perfect, battery was lasting wonderfully, and it did not get hot once. So i didn't want to exchange it in fear I'd get something worse. Well I needed to get Nexus protect so I bit the bullet! Will see what happens when this new one gets delivered.

Re: Anyone have the "bulge" on the back/bottom piece?

Honestly, I wouldn't settle. I'll get as many replacement devices as it takes. This is your hard earned money - even if you're a billionaire. You should get a device that comes out of the box looking like it hasn't been touched. I understand there are manufacturing issues here and there, but we shouldn't have to compromise. Google will continue to hook you up. I've never had a single issue with their customer service.

Well, I didn't settle. They were very apologetic and ordered me a new one. Google has excellent customer service and they don't spin me around department go department. Love it.

Re: Anyone have the "bulge" on the back/bottom piece?

some on xda are simply using a hair dryer and pressure to get it to stick

Oh come on, lol. This is as ridiculous as putting business cards under a battery cover to silence the creaking! :D

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

Can you change colors with nexus protect? I doubt it, but never know if you be persuasive enough on the phone

I'm sure it's helpful to the OP to hear this is why others went w/aluminum. 😉

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

Do you think little nicks on a frost white would stand out like the graphite? My last two phones have been htc ones and I wanted to get something different than aluminum this time around.

Re: Should I return my Nexus 6P? (Paint scraping off)

Is there no coating on the aluminium, just pure metal? I was leaning towards graphite but if this could be a problem I dont mind switching?

No bulges or other visible defects on my handset. Counting my blessings . . .
