Not recognizing Epic 4g as a USB drive

Have you tried installing the SDK? Its really easy on the Mac. I'm trying to figure out differences between our computers. I only had the issue with a different cable, no issues since using the sammy cable. I've had the SDK installed for a while.

I did install the SDK, but it is possible that it is not set up correctly. I am researching that now.

OK, I made sure that the sdk was updated with the latest platform files, made sure the .bash_profile had the correct path in it, and still nothing happens when I connect in USB debugging mode :(. I'm not even getting the error message that I was previously.

Rebooting the phone and reconnecting to my Macbook got me the error message "the disk you inserted is not readable" with options for initialize, ignore and eject. I chose ignore and opened Disk Utility. In there, the card shows with one partition called "disk2s1", which is greyed out and unmountable. I clicked "verify disk" and it said there was an error reading the volume and to repair the disk, but the option to "repair disk" using disk utility is greyed out. The same thing happens even if I reformat the sdcard using the phone and try it all over again.

lol @ my hijacking of this thread. It gets even weirder now. Now, after I connect the device, the sd card with the partition "no name" (which I know is the correct name for the partition) flashes temporarily in Disk Utility, with "no name" greyed out, but disappears after a second or two and I am left with no evidence of the connection.

Same problem here. Didn't bother to try any other solutions, but I want to get some music on this, so I can sell my iPod. (although Pandora has really been a good temporary replacement)

My home computer is not detecting the epic now. It makes the "ding ding" sound and is listed in device manager (and as working properly) but the drive isn't listed. Tried mass storage, charging, usb debugging on/off, mount, unmounted, reinstalling, everything....Nothing is working.

I tried a combination of many suggestions in this thread and was able to get it to work finally. I'm not sure if there was a single option that resolved it or not. With the phone unplugged I:

- uninstalled the Samsung drivers.
- cleaned up the device manager.
- rebooted.
- reinstalled the drivers.
- turned off USB debugging on the Epic.
- plugged the Epic into the rear USB port instead of the front one on my computer.
- the drivers installed successfully and I was then presented with 3 options, one of which was to mount as USB.

USB fix

I had the same problems as all of you...but several answers are right. I just plugged it in the back of my computer instead of the front and it worked...

For whatever reason, the computer wouldn't recognize my phone plugged into the USB 3.0 port... switched to a 2.0 port, and it worked immediately.

Running Win 7 64 bit

So did anyone get a MAC to connect w/o root?

Several people have jumped in this thread and said they finally got it to work. I have not gone back to filter who was using what operating systems people are getting to work or not.

I have a mac. All the problems listed above, I have with mine. No solution works. So....did anyone actually get it to work with a MAC? I have new 15" macbook pro w/ current o/s. Won't mount..tried all above items. Please inform & have a great day.

I think I've narrowed down what the issue is. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to fix it. I spent a lot of time investigating why certain ADB commands (like shell) wouldn't work with my phone via USB, mounting drives, etc. It appears to be an issue with the USB ports on laptop machines (and on the front of some desktops). These ports traditionally run at a lower output amperage than regular desktop ports (the ones in the back). I've plugged my phone into my desktop machine and it works no issues. Laptop, only partially works. Using ADBwifi on my laptop to my phone works fine as well.

So the question is - how does Samsung plan on resolving this? This seems like a giant mess up on their part to require high power USB ports.

You're right on the front of the desktops... mine can't do it when something is plugged into the other port. They share the same power input, so if nothing's connected to the other port, it works, but if both are occupied, only 1 works (when trying adb). Otherwise, most things run fine on both front ports.

Well if some of you want to try this out, in windows you can go to Device Manager, and go to the USB section, and you should see a stock pile of USB hubs (or maybe just a couple). Right click each one of them go to properties, and then to the power management, and uncheck "Allow computer to turn this device off to save power." If there are any other power regulating features, disable those.

Sorry MAC guys, I have no clue what the equivalent in tiger is, but hopefully you'll have seen this option before and be able to go straight to it.

Also, for those USB 1.0/1.1 ports that do output lower amps, a shorter USB cable will help, which is why some of you have success when using the one Samsung provides. (Also possible they're using better material)

I forgot the username of who has been getting different errors throughout, I am scared you may have tinkered with it where this may not work for you, I'd restore to a previous checkpoint, maybe a day or two before, and then try these ideas out.

Hope they have an Intel processor if they are running tiger... The SDK only works on intel based Macs (hence why the default name is android-sdk-mac_86) Its OK, I know you're not a Mac guy and the effort was there... I'm slowly hating my Mac more and more daily. I looked at computers yesterday, Apple wasn't on the list.

Well they are based partially on BSD, solid operating system to be based off of. Although the only BSD based OS I use is open-bsd for my firewall, gotta love how easy packet filter is over iptables;)

You can install windows on your MAC because it is intel based :) (If you're using a newer mac at least, which I might've missed in your earlier posts)

Well best of luck in getting a new computer, the i7 series definitely has my vote of support.

Mac users -

New to the forum, but not to the issue. I've been working on this a few days. I have an Intel iMac running Snow Leopard. Ended up using a combination of the suggestions to get it working:

- Turned on debugging on the phone
- Plugged into usb port on the BACK of the computer, not the keyboard
- Used the Samsung cable that came with the phone

Mount the mass storage, and click on cancel when the tethering option comes up. The device should appear, and be sure to rename it. It should appear every time going forward.

Thanks to everyone working on this, it was REALLY frustrating.
