Note 5 vs Note 4

While i can't argue with the idea that a 128gb S6 or Note 5 with its faster memory controller will out perform a Note 4 with a 64gb card (obviously the hardware is newer and faster but I'm talking memory performance in general), I take issue with the drawing of conclusions as to the degree of performance hit made by the article given the methods used in the study. Read page 4 of the study and pay particular attention to the reference to the 3rd and 2nd to the last paragraphs. How many users are going to repartition their phones to force system cache and all application data to live on the slower microSD card? None, because cache needs to run on the fastest memory possible. Again I have no issues with the concept that internal memory is faster but the article and study is misleading. ..

I agree... And a step further... IMHO, it's truly not the SD card that should be at issue, it's the underlying code (read that as android) and thus Google, that's the real issue. Our devices are handheld computers that happen to have a phone, and are as least as powerful as notebooks of a few years ago. Whether you look at a PC, Mac, or even a Linux device - all handle external storage with vigor. Code and firmware is the real culprit in this discussion... And the apathy of those that align themselves with manufacturer and developer excuses.

Long time Samsung customer, currently running S4. Passed on the S6 due to small, non removable battery. Will probably pass on the Note 5 due to small non removable battery. Taking a serious look at the Note 4.

Just got off the phone with Samsung Tech, they cleaned up my S4's cache and system to help it run smoother for the time being. The tech, off the record, so to speak, recommended to me to go to the Note 4 when I asked him... will the Note 4 take me out for the next two to three years. He said... yes. Plus it's the product from Samsung that gives the techs the least amount of problems.

On Verizon with UDP. Will look for them, hopefully soon, to cut their pricing on the Note 4, off contract, so that I can keep my UDP. Will buy from VZ so I can keep my extended warranty and insurance replacement plan.

Samsung has taken a very unprofitable, for them, route by basically copying Apple's sealed system. This is my personal opinion also shared by many. I run five batteries in my S4 and will run at least two to three in the Note 4 if I do purchase it.

My thought is that if the Note 4 starts to get more popular and the Note 5 doesn't sell well the Note 4 probably won't drop in price. We shall see.

Here's another reason to get rid of the SD cards - this is an excerpt (from this page: Storage wars: do we really need microSD cards in our phones? | TechRadar ):

"According to a study carried out by Hyojun Kim at the Georgia Institute of technology, using a microSD card in your phone can cause it to become sluggish, with even basic tasks like web browsing suffering as a result. Overall performance can often drop by between 100% and 300% and in one case the study found that there was an incredible 2000% decrease in performance."

SD cards have an obvious advantage - but also come at a price.

Yep and that is for folks that use apps2sd, which is not an option now and most people use the card for media, which a card is more than fine. Seems a a study that was done with a less than broad sample of testing and seemed to be predestined in its findings. New card tech though has caught up for speed, but not planned for mass production this year.

What don't you like about your n4e?

I had both the 4 and the 4e. The 4e trends to lag and I have to reboot often. I think the edge screen taps it too much.

Interesting. Did you disable the carrier bloat and set your animations to .5x in Developer Options?

IMO, the S6 was a technology demonstrator for DDR4 and the new files system and Exynos SOC, and Samsung didn't want anything to slow it down. As to harbinger ..not really sure about that, new Moto models continue to have it and the Moto Pure actually adds SD. The G4 and Sony models also continue to carry it forward. One thing we are likely to see is dual SIM models where the second SIM tray can take an SD card. In fact if Samsung and Apple get their way, traditional SIM cards may disappear leaving the potential to use the SIM tray as some sort of memory expansion. In fact given their abilities and their willingness to try new ideas it wouldn't surprise much if Samsung comes up with a micro-SSD drive that makes the SD as relevant as the 3 1/2 inch floppy...

Based on the apparent Note 5: No sd, 3000 mah fixed battery, same display, no IR, crack magnet design.....

The Note 4 is still the supreme overlord. Note 5 is down at the servant level with it's cousin the iPhone 6+ ;)

I'm not sure where you're coming from, bro.

I just said that my phone didn't slow down at all while using an SD card.

Maybe it's because it's one of these, or that I never run apps off an SD card. (My phone is an LG G4)

I still think that you must install apps to the phone's internal storage for the best performance, but an SD card bottlenecking a phone is beyond belief to me, unless it's a bad/faulty card or you had apps on it. It should only slow down during initial boot, when the phone is scanning both the internal storage and SD card for media.

And I noticed that in 2 of the threads, the SD card was a Samsung EVO SD card. I've never used them, and I think they're fine, but my friends had one and they kept corrupting the data inside.

Hah! Like the Georgia Tech study that used apps2sd when most use the card only for media. Almost like the studies and articles are agenda driven, but that's conspiracy talk ;)

Also card tech has caught up with the speed issues and will be in mass production next year. What excuse then? Cards are being removed so more money can be made selling higher storage models at a premium.

I've had several Samsung microSD cards, different sizes (currently a 128GB), and I've NEVER had any problems with them.

Samsung's enigma is that they're only offering 32GB internal memory (32 and 64 in the Asian market, possibly with microSD option, according to leaks). My Note 4 has 32GB of internal memory, but only has just over 7GB left. But I also have a 128GB Samsung microSD card installed. They actually make excellent cards. But they've chosen style over functionality. If they truly wanted to have both, they could have made internal memory options available up to 128GB. Too bad.

I'd love to get some information from the current Note 4 owners to get some background on the Note 4 vs the impending Note 5. I've been reading a lot online, and from what I can tell, most people really like their current Note 4's...and aren't really all that interested in upgrading.

I'd love some feedback....thank you...

As a current Note 4 owner, I can save that I love it. The performance is great, all-around. As far as the Note 5, no removeable battery AND no microSD option...no sale here. I'll keep my Note 4. I may switch to the upcoming LG G5, if it offers even greater performance than the LG G4. But, if not, I'm very satisfied with the N4.

^The Performance of the N4 great all around? I just need to press the multitasking button or switch from the camera to the gallery in order to know that this is simply not true.

Never experienced that "lag" issue on my Verizon Note 4. Not sure, but may be because I've disabled a ton of bloat and unused apps (see here)? Regardless though, even if there were a hiccup here or there, I still think the Note 4 is an all around great performing device. It's always run like a champ with anything I've ever thrown at it. :)

I have a ton of things disabled as well but that lag is still present. Funny thing is on my note 3 the lag isn't as noticeable especially when you go from the camera to the gallery.

Nonetheless, the N4 is a great device. From an ergonomical perspective the Note5 looks like an improvement.

I will get the Note 5 and keep my Note 4 as a backup for long days where I need to swap out a battery. I will trade in or sell my note 3.

I have loved the note series, had them all but no removable battery is the nail in the coffin for me.. I usually get the next note every year but this time I will wait and see for another great device WITH a removable battery.
