Note 5 vs Note 4

Im sure it will be a good phone but lets just say I bought a Note 5 and decided I loved it so much I decided to use the note 5 forever, well guess what batteries degrade over time and eventually the note 5 will probably become useless. As for the Note 4 just buy a new battery!

The battery is sealed in not irreplaceable. I think many folks forget that. Sealed batteries in devices is nothing new. No, they are not swappable but can be replaced if they fail. Just not by the user unless they are qualified to do so.

I think for most people, by the time a battery "wears out" they'll want a new phone anyways.

What will they charge for that my guess is $100+.

Yeah, that I'm not too sure about. If it fails prematurely maybe it falls under the warranty???? If it's just worn after 2 years or so I'd think the cost to replace would be low. But, that's just me guessing.

Kind of simple IMO: If a media fan and already tight on space, or do not want to either burn your data cap, or rely on wifi access (not that secure in public) to access your own content, or need the battery swap convenience, a device that handles drops better: Note 4 wins by a landslide!

If none of that stuff bothers you, the Note 5 will likely win by a landslide. Still can not rationalize the practicality of a portable glass encased device- especially once a cased is place on it and the pretty, slippery glass surface is covered up. What "could have been" though, if a no glass, 7422 chip, sd slot and a 4100mah battery. I would not even mind the fixed battery if 4100 mah. The sd slot loss though to try and coerce folks into paying premium cash for LESS storage is just not a wholesome thing to do. Mr. Rogers would not have approved! Nor the Walton's if they had the technology then!

^The Performance of the N4 great all around? I just need to press the multitasking button or switch from the camera to the gallery in order to know that this is simply not true.
If this is the worst thing about you day or experience, you have no real concerns.

I thought the Note 5 wasn't going to be announced until Thursday. To read some of these posts you'd think Samsung had already had the announcement event.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but my note 4 has really bad lag and performance issues too. I'll try the suggestions listed and see if that helps. I was planning on upgrading to the note 5 but with the way my note 4 has been acting lately I'm not sure if I even want to do that. Maybe I'll wait for the Moto X.

I won't upgrade.Love my note 4.Actually,i could live with the note 3 also(i just like the screen on the note 4).
If they remove the battery replacement,i won't.I always carry 2 batteries with me

No matter what you folks who say the Note 5 is better... it is NOT that much better at all.
In 15 years of owning cell phones, I've found the greatest improvements is every two years, not one year.
No removable battery or SD card actually makes the Note 5 worse than the Note 4.
What are you gonna do, when you have to do a battery pull to fix issues on Note 5? Take it to the phone store? Good luck with that.
I'll wait for the Note 6 and see what else is out there when the time comes.

No need for battery pulls. You would hold down a couple of buttons and the device will reset should it be frozen. It's the same as all devices on the market today with sealed batteries. There's no need to bring it to a store. I have never pulled the battery in my note 4. Full disclosure, it has come out when I dropped it.

The Note 5 is the next iteration in the Note series. Just like cars this device gets released every year. It doesn't make the newer model better or worse. There are changes made based on feedback, improved technology, and other factors. You aren't going to find huge improvements in hardware simply because OEMS have caught up with the advances in technology. I think logic tells us, the longer you hold off on upgrading a device (2+ years) the more significant the changes in the newer device compared to upgrading in a year or less time frame.

It's premature to say the Note 5 will be worse than the Note 4 seeing it's not released yet. In the off chance that it is, really what's the big deal? People coming from other OEMS or even older Note's, may find the Note 5 to be quite the improvement.

I have never bought an extra 🔋for any of my phones so I don't have a problem with the sealed 🔋 on the coming Note 5, my gripe has been the way Samsung has been looking after their devices lately, poorly. My Note 4 has not enjoyed support that a current device deserves.

The addition or lack of micro SD card is also not a deal breaker if the phone has 32 GB of space, though I think it's silly of Samsung to remove the SD card support on their top end devices. The speeds that they boast about are surely not important against storage space, especially seeing how it is their junked up software that causes slow down of these phones.

I'm really mad I failed to buy a note 4 while the samsung rebate was in effect. I thought I would wait for note 5 but now I have no interest in note 5 and rebate from samsung is gone. I love my note 3 so I was torn.

If you do not value the sd or the battery options, seems a given the 5 will rock. Just that losing those things, the IR blaster and having a more fragile build seems like steps in the wrong direction for a significant amount of current Note owners. The Note 4 is still a viable option :)

This is all about the $$$ for Samsung and the Carriers! It is all about selling phones to Samsung and the Carriers... mostly hype to get your $$$. Have you seen the markup for getting a phone with 64GB or 128GB? That is a Cash Cow for them. If you were allowed to use an SD card, you certainly wouldn't be buying a phone with 64 or 128GB would you? There is NOT that much improvement on the Note 5 to justify getting one. In fact, the Note 4 is the better phone as you have more options such as the battery & SD card removal. I'll wait until 2016 and see what is out there then.
I have a relative that is going to get the Note 5 when it comes out as she has the Note 3 which will justify getting one. Then I'll compare phones and I'm willing to bet that neither of us can tell much difference in everyday performance... think about it. ;)
So true, it's a 💰 making racket. My wife will also be upgrading from her Note 3 to the 5. Now my Note 4 runs CM12.1 (it's extremely smooth), I doubt the Note 5 will be faster except in benchmarks.

Side by side in a case, how would one really benefit by having the Note 5 over the Note 4, if everything being rumored lately is accurate?
Once the Note 4 is updated to 5.1.1, where is the benefit from the Note 5?

I've reviewed the specs of both phones, and aside from the battery and SD card which have fueled so much anger, the main difference I see, if the specs I'm looking at are correct, is that the Note 4 has a 3220 mAh Lithium ION (Li-ION) battery and the Note 5 has a 3000mAh Lithium Polymer (LiPo).

There is a big difference between Li-ION and LiPo batteries. LiPo batteries cannot be user replaceable, as they are far more unstable than Li-ION. A simple poke or overcharge of a LiPo battery could cause a VERY serious fire. They are designed to be recharged ONLY in a device - not in an external charger (however, many remote airplanes/drones do use LiPo batteries, and they are recharged externally).

Although LiPo batteries can erupt into a VERY high-temperature fire if mishandled, they are less likely to violently explode than Li-Ion batteries - that's why the battery in the Note 5 (and iPhones) isn't replaceable. LiPo batteries are also lighter and last longer than Li-Ion batteries. They also hold a charge when not used much longer. And, they're more expensive than Li-Ion.

LiPo batteries also have significantly more capacity.

Unfortunately, some things (like the battery issue with the Note 5) aren't as clear as we'd like them to be.

It is mainly due to new device fever :) Like the S4 a few years back, the Note 4 has not caused me to get a fever this time. I did not see the S5 a big upgrade and find the Note 5 an overall downgrade.

The 64gb, sd slot and front stereo speakers might cause some with Moto X Pure. A little anyway.

Every time I pick up my Note 4 I think "Wow, this is really nice." I like knowing it doesn't really matter if the battery degrades but the truth is that by the time that happens I'll be wanting something new. Samsung probably realized that most people feel this way.

I am on a 2 year contract, so I don't have to worry about upgrading, yet. But if I was to upgrade, I would be looking at the LG g4 maybe the moto x 2015. I use my sd card for music and haven't replaced my battery, but I love having the option to swap it out or pull it if my phone ever froze. However, at the current rate I would like to see the iPhone 6s+. Especially, if it was a note 5 with no other options.

If the rumor of a 4100mah battery turns out to be true I will seriously consider upgrading from my Note 4. I don't have a spare battery and don't use an SD card so they won't affect me. A big battery, wireless charging, and hopefully more streamlined software all sound good to me.

The reception and signal strength have dropped considerably after upgrading to Lollipop on Verizon. I'm hoping 5.1.1 fixes it. If they bring out a developers edition Note 5 that is the way I will go.
