Official Battery Life Thread

Almost 10 hours and down to 14%. This is avg use, some youtube (was showing the screens to guys at work) a bunch of txt, always txting. Maybe 4 phone calls, some app downloads, playing with settings etc... I will add I was in a concrete block with a couple of 300 lb steel doors to get in and out. and was on 4G the whole time.

It charged back up pretty quickly, this after being on my truck charger for about a hour maybe a little longer.

Now that I have used it for a few days, I would have to say that the battery life us pretty damn good. I am back to what I call normal use. Have the extra battery and have swapped out at work sometimes. But this is pretty good being off the charger all night.View attachment 19229

Saturday night I wanted to see how fast it would drain if I watched some Netflix on it. Now this was at home so it was over WiFi. I took the phone of charger at 100% battery and never let the screen (screen was at 50%) brightness go off and watched Netflix all but maybe 5 min. So in a hour and 19 mins I used 26% of the battery. Meaning you may get 4 hours of streaming videos before needing to recharge. About what I expected.

has anyone messed with turning their NFC off to see if it saves power? i just tried it this morning, not seeing a huge difference. does that even use any power by keeping it on and not in use?

Probably because you were on Wifi. Being off 4G saves a lot of juice from GN. I reached 40hrs during the last weekend, entirely on Wifi, light usage (1hr on-screen time). Too bad that I didn't save the screenshot of 40hr. However, I did post some screenshots of 24hr (at 50% battery) somewhere on the forum.

Yes but you didn't use your phone at all. Pretty much any phone can go 40hr standby if you don't use it (screen on time). I achieved 4 hours and 41 minutes of actual screen on and USAGE :) That is what I'm most happy about.

I would keep it off when not in use, just due to security reasons!

Here's what I've found... at work I'm about 1/4 mile from an LTE tower. I lose all of 4% an hour of battery with some usage while at work. At home, I'm in a fringe area between two LTE areas, and I chew thru the battery in a matter of hours. I suspect if they fix the 3G radio issues (which seem to be pretty common with most of the new phone launches with it having tracking issues between LTE and 3G) it should help a lot in many circumstances.

Just checked my battery life. It's at 62% with 7hr and 41 minutes on battery; 2 of those hrs are on WiFi at home. This is with normal usage for me - checking email, checking market and Amazon App Store for updates and free app of the day, updating apps, checking and checking off tasks, checking my agenda, entering stuff in WW Mobile, accessing Facbook, accesing Twitter, and just light playing with the new phone. I did not change any settings to reduce battery consumption.

When I got the phone Saturday, the battery life was bad. It was also bad on Sunday.

I really haven't setup my phone like I want - working 11 hrs six days a week and getting ready for Chirstmas. I have the whole week after Christmas off so I will be setting up my phone and giving it a real workout, along with setting up my new laptop after my old one died the day after Thinksgiving and converting my .lit ebooks to .epub ebooks. It is going to be a busy week.

You are correct. My talk time was less than a few minutes. Most of my on-screen time was about checking emails, checking messages, checking times, checking the battery.... :D

However, I cannot agree that every phone would reach 40hrs with very light usage. Not all 4G android phones would reach 40hrs with 1hr on-screen time. At least, not easily. What I am trying to say is that, beside the abnormal exhaustion of battery due to weak signal strength, the actual battery life of GN is not bad compared to other VZW 4G android phones.

I have quickly become a proponent of multiple batteries. Get the extra battery with charging dock, charge both overnight and DO NOT WORRY about running out of juice. Especially if you have days where you simply cannot plug in.

I hate the thought of turning everything off and dumbing the phone down just to make the battery last. Keep an extra battery handy (they are very small) and...
1) enjoy a bright screen
2) enjoy 4G
3) set the screen so that it doesn't turn off in 30 seconds....go crazy....set it for a minute or two

What you will "MISS" is..
1) obsessing about your battery %
2) dim screens
3) forgetting to turn your bluetooth on when you get in your car
4) forgetting to turn your wifi on when you get home or work
etc..
etc..

ENJOY your phone....don't worry about it 24/7!!!!!!!

To give you guys a comparison.

Right now my Thunderbolt has been unplugged for 20 hours 49 minutes- 6 minutes of calls, 3.45 hours of screen on time, all on wifi. 46 percent left in standard battery with display at 25%.

My Gnex, 6 hrs, 43 minutes, 7 minutes of calls 51 minutes of screen time (no wifi), screen at around 25%, 4g turned off.....44% battery left. And I have the extended battery!

Im sitting at 20h 56m with 22min of voice calls, wifi on, screen about 65% and have 26% battery left with stock battery.

Not sure if this was posted in this thread, looks like there may be a bug.
Issue 22878 - android - Galaxy Nexus ICS 'Android OS' High Battery usage - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

Here is my usage.
Android OS 26%
Screen 26%
Phone idle 15%
Voice calls 13%
Cell Standby 11%
Google Services 3%
Bluetooth 3%

Unplugged since 8:44AM, it's now 3:01pm and I'm at 65% battery. Not too bad I guess. Yesterday I got horrible battery life, though I didn't look at the battery usage. I was in the car mostly streaming slacker via bluetooth for a couple hours and the phone was discharging quicker than the charger could charge it. That was with a 1A car charger.

That's the way it should be!!! Kudos to you!!!

I am at my office, putting my GN on a charging dock. When commuting between my office and my home, I put my GN to a car dock with a car charger connected. At home, I leave my GN connected to a wall charger of my master bedroom.

My home has Wifi. My office has Wifi. My commuting route always has strong 4G.

So, unless I intentionally try testing, I have no time to drain the battery of my GN!!! :D

Whatever works, right??? The only thing I hate about being plugged in all the time is that the cable gets kind of annoying, especially in my car.

The bottom line is that people need to find a system that works for them. I'm tired of the "I expect at least 16 hours of life at high usage and performance on a full charge". Sorry. If that's your main requirement, get a Samsung Gusto and have fun on their forums... ha ha. If you get the GN, I implore you to NOT jip yourself and turn off all of the features and dim the screen to save battery. What's the point???? Use this bad boy!!!

There was a guy who posted he uses 3 batteries. I had this vision of Jack Bauer firing away on his 9mm, switching out clips and emptying another. All that matters is that you have the ammo whether it be batteries or plugged in.

Total On Screen Time: 1hr 32m 20s

I charged it last night around 9:00.. and used somewhat today.. 4g has been off. Brightness looks to be about 20%.. looks like it's really low, but I have no problem seeing it indoors.

I'm not really having an issue with battery life, it lasts me through work and in to dinner time most days. But I just bought the extended battery from VZW and was wondering if I should charge up my original standard battery before storing it or get it at 50% or what is an ideal charge for a battery being stored? I don't see myself being someone that switches batteries out often unless I go on vacation then that might be something I'd do, but not an everyday thing. I don't want to harm the performance of the standard battery so I thought I'd see if anyone knows what the best thing to do is when storing it.

I get about ten hours of moderate to heavy use.

On a typical day I take the phone off the charger at 6:00 AM. At this time the phone has data enabled (3 and 4G). At around 7:00 I turn off mobile data and turn on blue tooth, and listen to music until 9:30. From 9:30 until 10:00 I turn off blue tooth, turn on mobile data (3 and 4G) and surf the net. From 10:00 until Noon mobile data is off again and blue tooth is on with music player working. From Noon until 1:00 PM blue tooth is off and mobile data back on, I use data for about half of the hour it is on. From 1:00 until 3:00 mobile data is off and blue tooth and music back on. From 3:00 to whenever the phone tells me to attach a charger I have WiFi on and am surfing the net.

I usually only talk on the phone for 20 or fewer minutes a day, but send 10 or more texts and 1-2 emails.

To be honest I do not know if this is considered moderate or heavy use. I think it is heavy use, the phone is active almost the entire ten hours.
