Official Gingerbread for the Captivate?

I just upgraded and noticed that the "Car Mode" (I've forgotten exactly its name) App that had been included in a previous update is no longer on my phone. The app is a special home launcher displayed in a vertical format. I sometimes used it, and I am wondering if this app or functionality is no longer part of the updated Android OS. Did others loose this to or is there something I need to do to get it back.

Try going to the Market>Apps>AT&T featured and look there. Otherwise search for "Vlingo," I think that will fit the bill.

It is easily rooted. All you have to do is install a kernel that includes root. I installed Samurai kernel and root was included. Then all you do is install superuser from the market.

I meant easily rooted as in super one click. I have no idea how to do what you refer to with installing a kernel that includes root-you may as well be talking Greek

I'm with ya on that. I think we'll see SOC support at some point. SOC v2.3.3 (?) Doesn't support official GB for the Captivate, fails at Step 6 for me.

Wasn't there in my list either, though this time it said "free" when I searched for it. The widget that I used before was not available when I downloaded it this time.

Oh I was talking about Vlingo, my Vlingo wasn't listed in the Market under My Apps after my restore and they have changed Vlingo some. Made a free app that is like Siri and I had to really, really search to find the original Vlingo I had and that widget is what I can't get anymore.

There has been another update released. This is full version release, not BETA. I wasn't able to use Samsung Kies to update it through them, I had to down the rom and use Odin again.

If their procedures don't work, Google for the I897UCKK4 oneclick update.

There is a guy on one of the other forums that uses Obin and the ROM in an .exe file that will install the new AT&T / Samsung ROM. It is the official update, just won't be installed by KIES.

I'm confused, what is their an update for? Why would it not be available via Kies?

More problems, wondering if anyone else has encountered these:

Running: stock 2.3.5

- Stock applications randomly closing. At first it was just the messaging app. I open it, the phone goes back to the homescreen. I can do this 4-5 times before it stays open. 1/2 the time I slide the puzzle piece over on the lock screen, it will open the message for 1-2 seconds before fading back to the homescreen again. Sometimes I am in the middle of typing and it goes back to the homescreen (the keyboard remains, but I'm typing on the homescreen, which does nothing). If I restart it goes away for a day or two, but then starts happening again. And yes, I've done a factory reset twice now.

Starting today, the dialer is doing the same thing. I had to make 2-3 attempts to make a call because the dialer kept closing before the call connecting.

-TW launcher force closing. It only happened for the first time today, but the phone was just sitting on the home screen (no apps running) and then the message came up. As soon as I force closed, a pdf I had downloaded a few days ago popped up. I hit the back button and was brought to quick office. Back again to the browser opening the page I downloaded the pdf on. Back again to the pdf. Back again to the dialer. Back again to call logs. Back again to dialer. Back to the calculator, and so on. I kept hitting back 20-30 times and never got to the homescreen, just kept going back to another application. I hit the home button and all my home screens were blank. I rebooted and that solved the issue, but that shouldn't happen, right?

-Text recipient error. I can no longer capture a new photo within the text app (after I hit "save" on the image, it brings me back to the app with no photo), so I just take a photo and share it from the camera preview. BUT if I text the photo and then respond to another text without closing the camera first, (even though I am in a different message thread entirely), the messaging app will pop back to the picture recipient and send it to them. I have figured out to shut down the camera app first, but that shouldn't happen anyway.

Everything else works fine but I'm just about to throw this thing out the window.

I got a text today from att telling me about update. It installed very quickly and didn't report any errors....except while just sitting here with phone in standby mode, it suddenly started playing music. I clicked the power button and didn't see the music player going, swiped and still nothing open and music still playing. As soon as I opened the notification bar it stopped and hasn't come back.

A couple days ago I noticed my phone doing the error with attaching a picture in a text. Take picture, say save and it just returns to the camera mode. If I exit and attach from gallery its fine.

+1 to all the above. Whats disappointing is you say you did a couple of factory resets and it didn't help? Not good..all that said, I think its time for a new device. Maybe the SGS2 even though its a little behind the tech curve

Are you having this issues too? They suck.

And yeah, I think I may need to jump ship. I've been trying to hold out as long as possible but I don't know if I can wait any longer. I've only had this phone 16-17 months, so I wasn't expecting to need to upgrade so soon. Of course timing sucks with the GS3 being announced relatively soon, and even the next iPhone rumored to be this summer. I never thought I would consider buying an iPhone, but I don't want this to happen again. People with the GS2 are talking about bugs/battery life issues ever since their 2.3.6 update. I just want the phone to work. So I guess it's either the GS2 or 4S.

Yeah I've heard good things about it, and no one can beat HTC's build quality, but I'm not a fan of sense and prefer to run stock launchers on my phones (in hopes to avoid problems). I may look into it, though!

After the GB update my phone camera hasn't worked, the dialer doesn't load up to make calls half the time, and almost all my apps force close when i try to open them. My email hasn't updated since the GB update either. I have factory reset my phone almost 5 times already and the problems persist. I can't roll back the upgrade or reinstall it. Does anyone know of another solution?

My Captivate is a refurb, and when it was on 2.1, worked fine. Installed CM7 and all sorts of trouble started. Tried multiple re-install, wiping, resetting, always flaky issues. Used ODIN to go back to 2.1, then Kies mini to go to 2.2, and all seemed fine.

Tried CM7 again, still flaky. Went back to 2.2 and rooted it again, all good. Tried to go to 2.3 via Kies multiple times, no luck. Finally used ODIN to get to 2.3, rooted.

Apps work fine, but I have experienced apparently spontaneous reboots, usually when locking the screen and usually every couple of days. Also have had lockups that require pulling the battery. These seem to occur when the phone is trying to switch between wi-fi and 3G for a connection, or vice-versa.

When it works, it's great, though I'm eyeing the Galaxy Note, hoping all the flakiness is due to the refurb nature. FWIW, my wife has the same refurb model still in 2.1 and all is hunky-dory.
