The Galaxy S6 shows a dramatic departure for Samsung devices. Out goes plastic, in goes metal and glass. Out goes a removable battery, in goes a fixed one. Out goes a microSD card slot, in goes......nothing. Just more internal flash storage + SSD hybrid.
Now, I'm a sucker for premium builds and I genuinely think the S6 is a nice looking device (although I still heavily question the design resemblance to the iPhone 6, especially the sides) but I think Samsung ditched quite a lot of what made the S5 a great smartphone.
Some things that are very questionable to me are;
- Having a fixed battery instead of a removable one, which is a concern when the battery may wear out faster due to quick charging and when you desperately need a charge but can't do a battery swap.
- Making said battery smaller and pairing it with a power-hungry 1440p screen. I'm not so sure that the 14nm Exynos chip will save more power than that screen chews through.
- Omitting the microSD card slot and apparently (in Europe) charging 100 euros extra for 64GB and another 100 euros extra for 128GB.
- No more IP water-resistance and dust-proofing.
Now, I still think that Samsung made a nice phone, but I think they made quite a lot of compromises to make it. A microSD card slot on the side would be nice. HTC has done it on the M8 and M9, so it isn't that hard, right?
Your thoughts? And yes, I'm prepared for the incoming shower of torches and pitchforks from Samsung fans.
