On the GS6. What's more of a deal breaker for you, no removable battery or no SD card?

I'm sure two batteries won't cut it for a week of backpacking in the high peaks. So what do you do for power?

So a charged up external power pack wouldn't work?

I do not leave the phone on. It's for emergency! Using the phone and getting a distant back country signal eats up A LOT of juice.

I carry spare batteries for my headlamp and gps. An extra battery for an emergency phone has been mandatory.

It was HTC's decision to remove the sdcard slot in the original One that made me switch to Samsung, along with many other consumers. Now that Samsung are removing the slot and HTC have realised their error and put it back, I will be looking at HTC for my next upgrade. Way to make the choice easy.

Talking with some guys at work Friday, they got to laughing because how popular Samsung phones have become, and a huge reason why they went with the Galaxy line was because of the swappable battery.

You're kidding, right? The Iphone 6 is just now doing what the S3 did 3 years ago.

You're familiar with Apples logo:

If we can't innovate, we'll litigate.

No I'm not kidding. Most of the features you are talking about aren't used by a majority of the people. How many people actually use the nfc? My point that I'm trying to get across is that if you want your products to stand out, you need to have features that stand out not only the software but hardware too. Verizon will not stock high memory phones. Removable battery is something else that stands out for Samsung phones. They are doing the same things that ran people away from Motorola.

Verizon is stocking all 3 storage versions of the S6.

No SD card is a forever deal breaker for me! NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER will I buy a device without expandable memory! No removable battery isn't very bright either. How do you reset a frozen device?

The S6 is a Samsung iPhone! I got a Note 4 and LOVE it. Had an S4 and loved that. When the Note 5 (and so on) comes out, if they do this to that, it'll be bye-bye Samsung and hello LG or Motorola etc. I'm not even interested in the S6 but I'm pissed that they did this because it scares me to think that Samsung might be going this way in the future. But why? WHY? Somebody PLEASE explain why they would do this? What POSSIBLE advantage could this pose? Are they trying to save .20¢ per phone manufacturing cost?

I just don't get it. I'm amazed at the claim of 20 million pre-orders...I wonder though...how many of those people know that they're buying an iPhone made by Samsung? I NEVER thought I'd see this day...

People 'desperately' need to access 128gb of sd storage plus phone storage of 16 - 32gb 'all the time',

or what could have been 128gb phone storage and a 200gb sd card on an sd enabled S6.

I don't buy it.

Keep a flash or hard drive for everything. Trim it down.

How much data do documents for work use. How long does it take to play umpteen HD videos on a 5" screen or cast to a large tv where you can find one.

If at home use a tv / player and recorder or stream. How many times do you want to watch the same movie. A few favorites OK. Keep them at home and take one.

How long do you spend every day listening to 30 billion songs.

How much paperwork, and discs does this represent.
Using an sd card as a back up, when thumb drives are so cheap, storable and secure, doesn't make sense.

Plan ahead.

People want to jump forward 2 or 3 evolutionary steps.

Shoot me down all you want.

I don't buy any argument.

Well don't you just have the best solution. But here's the thing...

First. Maybe (no...DEFINITELY) most people WANT to keep what THEY want to keep ON their device. Meaning adequate storage onto which to store it.

Second. There are people like me who work out of town (out of STATE actually) and have no access to our large TV's and the other sources of storage/media that you mention. So we like to have ALL our stuff WITH us.

Third. Thumb drives? Really? A micro-SD card solves that problem...and THAT'S what we are upset at Samsung about.

If YOUR solutions work for YOU, that's great. But they DON'T work for everyone. See, if Samsung OFFERS the removable memory feature and YOU choose not to use it, that has zero affect on you, and zero affect on anyone else, EVERYONE is happy...use it or don't use it, but the option is THERE if you choose to use it. BUT...when there is NO OPTION, it affects MANY people. You might be happy with thumb drives and other external media storage devices laying around on your desk or dresser drawer, but most people will not be content with that, so your solutions don't work for most of us. Consider yourself shot down LOL.

The price. $949 off contract? Seriously? That's the price of a gaming laptop.

No thanks.

That's NUTS! I paid full off-contract price for my Note 4, $720.00, and it's ten times what the S6 could HOPE to be. Someone's smoking some good stuff!

I feel like if I only read all the words that you fully capitalize across all your posts they will reveal a hidden sentence. Remember, no one knows the full price of each device since that hasn't been officially announced. Most of the pricing rumors are coming from leaks and then people are doing conversions across currencies which doesn't typically line up anyways due to other factors.
For the SD card, don't worry there are many people on this forum who are upset by it and can go purchase other phones. However, I hope for your sake that you don't currently have the last cell phone you will ever own since you seem to clearly state that you will never buy a device without expandable storage.

..and YOU don't have to buy an S6.

Did they ever state why the chose to leave out the SD card slot and the swappable battery?

I don't think Samsung explicitly stated why but it was probably so they could design the phone they wanted to design.

Other OEMs have given reasons - like HTC has said they have a non-removable battery in some of their phones because the battery is actually between the screen and board and Motorola has said the Moto X doesn't have an SD slot because buyers of that phone usually have access to better networks for streaming while those who buy the Moto G and Moto E get the SD slot because it's a feature needed in markets where those two phones will be most sold.

removable battery is more likely a design choice. SD slot is for pure profit.

I disagree that removing the SD slot was pure profit. SD cards have been removed from a number of devices over the years and that was done as internal storage increased. Additionally, Google hasn't been a fan of SD cards for use with Android due to it limitations in storing/running apps, copyright concerns for their partners, and security issues. You can search and find articles going back at least three years discussing this.

then answer this question:

with sammy being a large maker of sd memory, sd card, etc, why don't they just sell ALL 128GB version GS6 for $20 more than currently planned base version? Why does it have to be $200 more?

They can even forgo all 32/64Gb version altogether if that makes production easier.

The stair case of the storage is clearly designed to get more profit, any other excuses are just that, excuses.

1. Price hasn't been officially announced.
2. Multiple storage options to give options to users. You are correct that they do need to make a profit and I have no doubt they charge more than it costs them since that is typically how a business actually stays in business. I guess you have done a cost analysis including all necessary factors to come up with the $20 price jump. Sounds like you should get into the smartphone business or at least the storage business.
3. You have clearly made up your mind on your stance for this and don't really care about anything said so just roll with your 3-step plan.
Step 1: Remove all SD card slots from phones.
Step 2: ???
Step 3. Profit

lol, Canadian prices are out already, but I am willing to continue this discussion when US prices are announced.

I don't understand your reasoning of "giving customers more options", if its $20 more, who would want an option of 32 GB vs 120GB? Enlighten me who are those preferring 32 gb when cost difference is minimum?

btw, I have made up as much of my mind as you have made up of yours, there is no need to make these type of meaningless statement.

You can discuss away, I have no doubt that you will. You made the closed statement that the removal of the SD card was pure profit. I disagree with that statement; however, I am open to changing my opinion on that once proof is shown that Samsung made the internal decision to remove the SD card for pure profit. You specifically stated that anything contrary to your opinion is only an excuse. That sounds to me like you are not open to further discussion on that point. That is the difference between someone being open to discussion and someone not being open to discussion.

As far as I can tell, the $20 jump you have come up with for storage sizes is actually the meaningless part of your discussion. Now that is my opinion. However, I am open to changing that opinion if you care to provide me with links to where you buy your storage (or a link to your store if you sell it) where I can consistently double the size of storage for $20. I'm hoping you have a 250 GB SSD drive for $100, then I can get a 500 GB drive for $120 or a 1 TB drive for $140.

Another great Moderator here, dpham00, put out a cost sheet for an iPhone 5 a year ago (it's on my pc).
Then the manufacturing cost gap between a 16gb, 32gb, and 64gb device with nand flash storage was just around $10 both times. I can post it later.

No doubt this newer storage is costlier, but with a year further on it may still be around $10. Although 64gb to 128gb may be higher.

So yes, Samsung could churn them out cheaper with 64 and 128gb, but no doubt they make a profit on their own sd cards as well, and these entice people to buy low end devices with the possibility of expansion for media.

No I think the sd card drop, for now on the S6, was other than for profit (I am sounding crazy now, I know).
More a toe in the water to change their premium market as sd cards can't keep up with internal speed, they will eventually make higher capacity devices affordable, and the build of the S6 supposedly necessitated it.

I don't think they will ditch it for the Note 5 yet.
