On the GS6. What's more of a deal breaker for you, no removable battery or no SD card?

Re: S6 is the reason I'm ditching Samsung, after owning Fascinate/S2/Droid Charge/S3/Note 2/Note 3/S

Since they made fun of the iPhone with the galaxy s5 commercial, showing that removable batteries rock, and now they come up with this, an iPhone clone, I'm with you, I have a note 4 at the moment, hoping they don't follow the same rule for the next note since right now I'm in love with this phone

That was a very good commercial. Samsung really drives the point home at the 40 second mark by showing someone changing a battery on a Galaxy S 5.

True, although I'd like them to sweat for it, so they won't be that callous with regard to people's privacy.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing to make them sweat?

Are you only using Tor servers?
Have you given up on Skype, Facebook, Twitter?
Do you and all of your contacts use red phone and textsecure ONLY?

Because if you're not doing all of this and more then you aren't going to make them do anything but laugh at you.

Of course, you could also fight the government. The last time it happened the police can no longer in the US gain access to your locked phone without a warrant.
Wikipedia has just put in a lawsuit with the NSA, maybe you should help fight this on thier behalf or with them. Obviously, until the government understands that what they are doing only hurts American business like Google, Apple, Cisco, Yahoo, Microsoft, almost all of our defense contractors, and many others, it just won't stop.

Again, just wondering what you are doing to make them sweat?

(I'm also sorry for derailing this thread with this topic)

why apologize? if people are interested, discussing away!

No, I am no where near sophisticated, so I only have primitive measures.

1. I used a FFOS ZTE OPEN phone in conjunction with my Note 3
2. I use Tor at times, use browser with HTTPS everywhere at other times
3. I don't use facebook
4. I don't use any bundled browsers on any system
5. I quit most of the google services (only gmail right now, working on transferring to hushmail) and disallow any data it requests on my phone, I disabled sync and most google apps on note 3
6. I don't use cloud storage

Sure they can laugh at me, at least not as hard as those who takes zero measures. If they take one more second to get my info, and if everybody is doing it, that should show something to them. I can't join any law suite because I have no standing, as I am not aware I received any harm.

I will improve more, one thing for sure is I won't stand still and do nothing.

Just as a heads up, Hushmail a number of years ago was found to turn over email on individual users targeted by governments. I'd suggest running your own mail server if you really want to keep everything private. Another good option is to use gmail, doesn't stand out as someone trying to hide, but encrypt the content of all your messages yourself. This way you are protected even on the mail servers receiving your messages. This is just a heads up, not bashing hushmail or anything, but I personally don't think any provided email service offers better protection to its users once a government gets involved.

Those that have used the S5 and have tried the Ultra Power Saving mode, how does it work? It looks like your just limited to phone, text and an internet browser, correct? I'm assuming all other notifications like email and apps are turned off? What kind of battery drain is there?

mmm.... I figure first priority is an email service provider from outside the US. I read Hushmail's statement and understand they are not perfect, just though they are better than those whose servers are physically located within US.

I will dig more.

The screen goes to grayscale and you can access only limited apps. It's more than just those three. You still have access to calculator, calendar, clock, Facebook, and Google + too. You don't get notifications from your other apps. The battery life is phenomenal when you do that. It's still dependant on how much you use it, but if you don't use it very much, you can go like 12 hours on 1 percent.

Awesome. Thanks. Seems perfect for those emergency situations where you get stuck somewhere longer than expected and are running low on battery.

I have it on my galaxt tab s 8.4. I dont think its as good as advertized, at least when you are using it. Sure its grayscale mode, but most webpages have white background, even "gray-scaled" white background still consumes more battery than firefox+blackground, which display most, if not all background in pure black. This is on top of security flaws of built-in browser (search for 'FREAK flaw' to learn more), which is the only one available in UPS mode.

Lollipop has improved standby battery tremendously, my note 3 only drop 0-1% overnight, I am unsure how much better Ultra Power Saving mode can be.

I guess I'll just have to try it on my own when I get the s6. Thanks for the tip about the blackground plug in for firefox. I may have to switch that to my default browser now instead of Chrome.

On phones it uses Chrome instead of their browser. My S5 doesn't even have their browser.

If you're in an emergency and aren't using your phone much, you're probably not going to be using your browser much so you'll still get great battery life. But yeah, if you're surfing the net, you may lose a lot of battery life.

Am I the only one who thinks it resembles the iPhones a bit?
I don't think it does. The bottom reminds me of an old Nokia phone, the frame edges remind me of the old Samsung Ativ from 2013, and the back is too shiny, and the front looks like the S4 and S5.

Then of course we have the S6 Edge that looks totally different than any other phones past and present.

Getting back to topic, I would prefer a removable back for battery replacement. The new wireless recharging may take 10+ minutes to yield 4 hrs of battery life, but 10 seconds to pop in a secondary battery is far more convenient and efficient. With a spare battery, I am not limited to sit near a wall or carry a wireless charging cable. Ever since I bought a 2nd battery for my Note 4, I never have to charge my phone in the day, and charging it at night wouldn't impede on my daily duties as I'm sound asleep. Sometimes when I forget to charge it overnight, no worries...I just pop in the spare battery. 😆

And then wait 10 minutes for your phone to boot back up and get all your services going again.

If it takes your phone 10 minutes to do that you may want to consider upgrading your device.

I know you were exaggerating but couldn't resist.

Not by much, takes some of them a while to get loaded, that's why I'd absolutely HATE doing battery swaps. Rather avoid it and just plug in a USB tank.

I also hate rebooting my phone. The USB external battery allows me to not have to reboot, but even better is that I can also charge my wife's phone or tablet or any thing else. My external battery packs allow at least 2 devices to be connected. For me, that makes it worth carrying the battery pack over any other option.
