Optimizing G4 battery thread

Just wanted to say thank you for the information in this thread. The Access Lock settings are especially helpful. It surprised me how many apps have access to and actually use wake lock and I turned that off for many of them, like Twitter and Facebook. I also went through my sync settings and though I didn't change much it was helpful to be reminded of what apps might be running in the background. My battery life had steadily been getting better on the phone over time (I only got it two weeks ago) but I think doing these few things may have helped it just a tiny bit more.

Here's today's stats so far:
2015-07-22 14.38.09.jpg2015-07-22 14.38.15.jpg
I unplugged the thing around 1am and when I woke up around 9 it was still at 100%. It has been on wifi all day, bluetooth is turned off, auto-brightness, and location is set on the most precise option. Mostly been using it for web browsing and Spotify.

That looks good.looks like you've got it dialed in just about right. Percentages look about like they should.

This makes me wonder.

The Facebook app is pretty notorious for being a battery and resources hog. I haven't had it on my phone for quite a while, and the Lite version (not officially released for US) is kinda lame. I use FB via the browser.

However, because of that, I haven't tried the app with Access Lock restricting it. Any observations or findings related to the differences it makes, if any?

Can't really explain the decent battery life in the past couple days. I do have Lux controlling brightness, listening to music the past 2 days, some surfing, emails, bit of Fb and Fb messenger, few photos... :x
I'd post a screenshot but I don't have enough posts yet.
Currently at 37hrs 44mins on battery.

I wanted to do a little more days than originally intended with the home depot app and mobile performance meter app removed from my G4. They definitely were rogue. Also I repeated the steps for google play services (I must not have done it right before) which factors in about equally with the others. Each adding about 2 hours more for a full charge. This first screenshot represents the average results of my G4 without home depot app but mobile performance meter still present. But I hadn't repeated the steps for google play services.

This second screenshot represents the average results of my G4 without both home depot app and mobile performance meter. And a day or two before I had repeated the steps for google play services. Note I still had 14% left in this screenshot vs the 5% left of the other. Android battery stats reported an estimated 2 hours left. That would make this about 17h15m at 5%.

This last set of screenshots shows things I'm concerned are other significant sources of battery drain. I'm not sure what they are or what may be causing them. If nobody knows anything about them then I'll have to try more searching to see what I can find. Any help with these is greatly appreciated. So far I think RILJ is related to location services. If that is correct then it's being woken a lot to check my location. Speaking of which I'm looking at locations services. I've always used high accuracy in the past and is something I'm considering changing if after determining if anything is asking for location is causing too much drain or if it is fairly equal share in drain. I didn't notice before but there is a "Enhanced Location" setting under Settings > Location > Mode it is called Accelerated Location" and description is uses quacomm IZat. A google search tells me this is supposed to improve finding location with reduced battery consumption. To use the setting I'm asked to consent to sharing location data with IZat. Which I assume means real people have access to that data and not just the internal use on the device.

I don't use the Facebook app for very much beyond reading posts and occasionally commenting. So far I haven't noticed any differences. I turned off all notifications in the app but still get them in the form of the iOS-like icon bubble. I should note that I don't have the Facebook Messenger app installed since I rarely use that part of Facebook.

Thanks for the feedback. I know that the FB app also didn't respond as expected when I used Greenify to try to beat it into submission. I also couldn't seem to find a way to completely shut off notifications. That's obviously an app that is rogue by design, and has earned its infamy.

Hey, new member here. I've been lurking this thread the past couple days trying to optimize my G4s battery life. I basically disabled "Keep Awake" permissions for all my apps, keep screen brightness below 50%, cleared Google Play Services cache then uninstalled/reinstalled, and I even tried a factory reset last night. But for the life of me I can't seem to get anywhere close to where you guys are at in terms of battery life/SOT.

I charged to 100% last night then unplugged before going to bed. When i woke up around 8AM I believe it was at 99%. I had about a little over an hour commute playing music through Bluetooth in the car and now I'm currently at 54% with 10:41 on battery but only 1:55 SoT. I'd post pics, but I'm not entirely sure how to yet, haha

Are my numbers pretty standard or do I have a dud in my hands? My leather back and battery should be coming in a few days, so maybe I'll have better results with the new battery.

Thanks in advance

This is how I use Facebook on my phone. The app is a notorious resources hog and I hardly miss a thing not having it installed (the exception being not having a quick Share to Facebook option for links,, etc. that don't have a button for that on the actual webpage).

I highly recommend Facebook Lite (I can't post a link, but search for it on APK Mirror) - it's technically not for use in the US, but it works just fine. It's just a fraction of the bloated FB app and you don't have to deal with using FB on your web app.

Thanks. I've used the Lite app before. Didn't like it much at all and actually prefer the mobile browser route to it.

I'm going to assume it showing 99% after over night 8+ hours off the charger is inaccurate. So at the time you read 54% you were off charger for almost 12 hours and had almost 2 hours screen on. If so that is better than I'm getting right now. I'm still looking for the elusive things draining the battery indirectly.

I haven't done anything special.. Phone is sitting at 52% with 3.5 hours SOT and 8 hours usage since last charge so far.

I've nailed down nearly all of the battery drains on my G4. To recap in case I forgot to post anything: Three rogue apps removed (home depot, CVS, and mobile performance meter); using my tasker brightness controller; google play services fixed (cleared cache and data uninstall and reinstall); disabled all unused stock loaded apps (see list below); and access lock used to deny location services and keep awake for nearly everything (see exception list below). The results are quite nice with 19-20 hours on a full charge (screenshots available) and at least two hours screen on time (I don't do a lot of stuff most days). I still have one or more things keeping my G4 awake for an hour longer than the time I'm actively using it. And they appear to be calling location services (based on the wake locks triggered). I have no idea how to identify what app or whatnot are doing it. Any help on what to try/do to identify that would be appreciated. Access lock doesn't appear to allow you to alter permissions for everything (no system apps?).

Disabled apps list: google docs, exchange, favorite contacts widget, file manager, google play books, google play movie & TV, google play music, google play newsstand, google+, hangouts, instagram, LG health agent (other LG health doesn't allow disable), messenger, pages manager, google sheets, google slides, snappage (I have no idea what it is), and tags.

Location services exceptions: tasker and YP (yellowpages).

Keep awake exceptions: call logs backup and restore and SMS backup and restore.

Nice. I've a hunch that YP might be one of your wake issues. Seems just like the type of app that would be looking for location all the time.

If you can live without it even for a day, I'd uninstall YP and see if your keep awake time drops noticeably. At least you'd know if it has an issue. You could then skip reinstall or install it again knowing it's a bit of a hog. Knowledge is power!

Anyone ever disable any of the apps that start with com.lg...?

Some of them can be disabled, but not knowing what they do, I'm chicken.

I usually don't mess with them unless I know exactly what they do. I'd research on Google or feel free to post them here and I'm sure someone can help figure out of they can safely be disabled.

Nice work.

And yeah, access lock doesn't allow you to touch system apps. And actually access lock shouldn't be there at all. I'm guessing LG just got lazy and decided not to remove it when Google removed App Ops from Android. Nice to see it coming back in M though.

I've got no idea what else to try. I'm down to 30% battery left at 3PM, with 36 minutes screen time, 42% Android System usage and 4 hours 20 minutes Held Awake. I've hardly used the phone at all today. I've only got gmail and calendar syncing with GPS set to battery saver mode and wake permission turned off in every app that allows it. This is after a factory reset a couple of days ago. I love the phone, but something unknown is definitely eating up my battery. I'd post GSAM screen shots, but what's the point...outside of Android System, no other apps show any significant battery usage.

Can you check data use by Android System?

I'm not downing this thread by any means. But for me, none of these suggestions did anything for my battery life. I average 3 hours SOT no matter what I do. I have tried all the battery saving apps and did all the removal of bloat, but it only gave me a minute or two. In my eyes that's not worth it. I have given up and just use my device as I want and keep the extra battery in my pocket. The phone does last me all day, so it's fine. I have also turned off the battery percentage in the notification bar so I'm not obsessed with it. This is just what happens for me. I am glad that many of you benifitted from this very useful thread. But if you are like me and nothing seems to help, just use your phone.
