Password Vault Apps

Yes, definitely keep a backup (e.g., store the database on a portable flashdrive and keep it in your underwear drawer--or whatever method you prefer). If a device with your password database is lost or stolen, you should have sufficient time to restore your backup on another device and begin changing your passwords (that's assuming you've chosen a strong passphrase for decrypting your password database).

Same applies to authentication tokens (e.g., a Yubikey) if you decide to go that route. I keep a spare (and less expensive model) Yubi key as a backup hidden away from home (just be sure to associate *both* keys on all the devices you use them on).

Every password manager I've tried has an autocomplete option (basically select the user field on the login screen, then select something like "autocomplete" in your password manager to have it automatically enter your user and password info).

To change existing passwords, part of it is a pain, part of it is easy. The painful part: you have to log in to each account individually and go to their change password option. The easy part: your password manager should have the ability to randomly generate a strong password for you (just be certain to observe any limitations that a site places on passwords, such as length limits, no special characters (such as spaces), that sort of things--oddly enough, banks will sometimes place ridiculous limitations on passwords).

My bigger concern is, which is more likely to go down or even shutdown?

Last Pass (and I'm sure others as well) keeps a copy of your vault on the device and you can still use it in offline mode. You can also download your vault for safe keeping on a storage device.

A lot of great input so far in this thread. One of the reasons that I want to start using a password app is that I'm beginning to fall into the standard trap of using one password because trying to remember a separate and difficult password for every app, website etc. is too daunting.

In all or any of these apps is there an easy way to get our existing passwords entered into the app and, more important, how would one go about changing those existing passwords into individual, long and complex passwords?

Definitely good on you for trying to get out of that habit. I have one really good password for my master password and all the rest are randomly generated and stored there. That way each login is separate from each other and have very strong passwords.

I did a lot of reading, checked out a number of passwords apps out in the play store and finally downloaded Bitdwarden. Setup an account tried to figure out how to use it and hit uninstall. I guess user friendly is going to have to be a criteria.

I really don't want a subscription service. I don't mind a decent price up front but it also has to be usable or, at least, have decent instructions or tutorial.

Another BlackBerry Password Keeper user here. Everything is encrypted even for backups and I trust BlackBerry security as far as my data is concerned.

As for web passwords, that is easily accomplished and synced via Firefox and my Firefox account across multiple desktops.

Any password manager will be somewhat of learning curve. Security usually isn't convenient. It will also take awhile to setup all your information within it.

I use Lastpass. The ease of any device and ease to 'autofill'.

BlackBerry password was my back in the day app. Alas, not available everywhere.

Tried 1Password, too. But, had an issue with it synching to Dropbox. So, go nervous about it. Alas, that was ages ago...

The problem is that in March 2019 LastPass received an update that has basically broken it. It still works for me on my cell phone, but on my laptop it broken. The lastpass own forum is full of pages and pages of compaints. Rather unfortunate as it used to be really good. I am now testing bitwarden and it seems to be fine.

ok, i guess another concern, because i'm reading the post in this thread, for those softwares that don't store your info in the cloud (because i'm not really a fan of the cloud myself) if the passwords are stored locally, what then happens if your device gets compromised??? i.e lost, stolen, or just dies??

would the suggestion be to make sure you have some sort of backup???

In Enpass, and most others, you can make an encrypted backup file which you can store anywhere. I keep a flash drive in a safe place with mine on it.

1Password for family and really need to get the family on it.

Works great as I can hop between everything. Except Samsung Browser on android. That, I migrate some of the passwords into Samsung Pass and use biometrics for that.

Well, I've downloaded Enpass, tried it and deleted it. I've downloaded Lastpass, tried it and deleted it. And now I've downloaded 1Password, tried and liked it. I like the clear and understandable directions for getting started and friendly interface.

I swore I wasn't going to do a subscription service but here I am. I've got 30 days before having to make a decision but so far this looks really good.

Many thanks to all for the suggestions and comments.

Good luck with that. I've had 1Password for over a year and am happy with it.

In the past I did not like subscription services either, but now I actually prefer subscription over all upfront for some types of software (especially when there is some service involved). I think it provides a better incentive for ongoing product improvement and customer service.

I don't mind subscription services for something like this that I use daily and has constant improvements beyond simple bug fixes. For something like a game, I'd rather pay once to have access to the full plotline (so no pay to win/DLC stuff) to use at my leisure.

Used: BlackBerry Password Keeper - Stopped using it because it's not available everywhere I need it to be. It's a phone only app.
Moved to: 1Password. It's pricey, and subscription based but it's everywhere I need it to be. Multiple devices, desktop, etc. and it's a solid app with great features and an excellent track record of secuirty AFAIK.

Is there any app that plays well with Password Keeper? I'm thinking of moving from it but have around 100 passwords that I'd need to move over easily.
