Phone is shutting down after connects to mobile network

So I tried to find out why, but I haven't found a relevant thread. So my phone (MTK6589), a little old now I know, works fine. I mean it worked until this morning when if I tried to connect it to mobile network it shuts down instantly after connecting.

Had a custom ROM, so I reinstalled the stock ROM and kernel. It still does the same. It works fine if I go to airplane mode even if I turn the wifi on, but otherwise, when I start the mobile network and it finds a connection, it instantly shuts down.
Has anyone encountered this? What can cause it? Why only when it finds a network connection. Can it be hardware related?

I tried with different SIM cards and it does the same. It's very weird because i can search for networks and stuff, but just when I connect, it shutsdown instantly.

Welcome as a new member.

I suppose it could be the SIM reader at fault. It may also be a duff app....have you tried Safe Mode? Or it could, as you suggest, be failing hardware. Otherwise, colour me baffled.
I'll pass this to others for suggestions.

As for WiFi, like stated initially, it works fine with it

Could be a hardware issue? BUT as a last resort perhaps it's time for a factory reset?
