Pixel 2 XL Screen Discussion

I like the color actually, just a little cooler than I like but seems like the pixel 1 XL with sRGB turned on.

I was happy until I noticed the black crushing issue. I have a few backgrounds that we're great on my last couple AMOLED screens, very dark with lots of details. This screen does not do these backgrounds Justice.
I hear you. I can't get a proper AMOLED black displayed on the lock screen--one that matches my now black Swift Black notifications. What I get looks like a solid black jpeg displayed on a really lousy IPS panel that leaks backlight everywhere.

I know the panel's not exclusively at fault because it can produce proper AMOLED blacks, the SB notifications look fine themselves. But they're far too noticeable because of the shoddy way the black wallpaper is displayed. Both my N6 and 6P reproduced a pure black on the lockscreen perfectly, even when the 6P was running Oreo.

For a second there I thought you were on to something, maybe this is a problem with how they display the wallpaper. But they seem about the same in quick pic.

Most people prefer more saturated colors. Full stop. Accurate or not. Maybe not as much in this forum, but overall people love punchy colors. They are more pleasing to most people. It is what it is.

Again ... accurate does NOT necessarily = pleasing . Rinse , repeat ..

This has been said many times before, and I agree completely.

I don't know if the analogy has been made yet (sorry if it has) but this is exactly like the audio world. With audio, most people prefer exaggerated lows and highs added to the mix - that sounds "good". A totally flat EQ is considered "as it should be" by audiophiles, but most will not like flat EQ. It's just not satisfying for them.

So as said before, flat or punched-up, just enjoy your phone.
And your music!

Um...

I think you have that backwards, that's the Pixel 2 XL on the left...

And, BTW, IMHO the Pixel 2 XL's screen looks better to me in that pic.

The phone on the left is Android (navigation buttons). The one on the right is an iPhone (menu icons). Having said that, I don't understand how the Pixel 2 has better whites on an OLED screen than an LCD screen.

I came here specifically to post this exact comment. I'm reading this on a Galaxy S7 and if I till the phone everything gets a blue tint. Haven't been using the phone long but just noticed it thanks to all this xl2 talk.

No blue tint on my Pixel XL. No matter how much I turn it. Waiting for the Pixel 2 XL to compare. I doubt the muted color is going to impact me. I have turned on sRGB on my Pixel XL from Dev Options.

PC.mag on youtube did imo an excellent job of judging the screen and be honest was realistic about it. I already went to a Verizon store and played with the XL and coming from the iphone 6s plus I am more than happy. What I am gathering from all the reviews and comments is it just isn't as vibrant or vivid as the Samsung screens, but I'm personally ok with that due to how their phones (for me) always lag after six months. Can't have a perfect phone no matter what you spend, its man made!

Because the iPhone has truetone. In low light, or yellow light it will change screen tone to match. With it off the iPhone would be more white.

This is a perfect example. Most phones are tuned very warm. When we see illuminated white our brains turn it blue, from over exposure to yellow screens. Use a pixel 2 XL for a week. Other phones will start to look yellow and dingy.
Hahaha...yeah...dingy a$$ iPhones.

I got my Pixel 2 XL yesterday and I'm returning. The tint is terrible, even at the slightest of angles. Holding the phone the same way I always hold it in an office chair, the phone is slightly off a direct angle. From the middle up to the top is a gradual fade to a light blue.

Leaving it flat on my desk in front of me it is even worse, looks like a piece of blue cellophane is over the screen.

Screen is way better on my original Pixel XL. I will either stay with that or I might try the V30 which doesn't seem to have this problem. Ugghh... I've been using a Nexus or Pixel now for 4 years...

I agree with the poster who commented on the way the phone displays red. Blues and greens seem accurate and although muted compared to other displays, I can appreciate the accuracy. There is no way that reds are accurate, however. Whomever is measuring these panels and whatever methods they are using for measurement are off for measuring reds. Vibrant reds that I have seen in person and directly from my wife's slr (like my kid's baseball uniform) and other professional photos, etc. have a maroon tint and more muted reds have an orange/brown tint. Reds and the colors near red on the color palette are not accurately displayed.

It is not a deal-breaker for me and I do think Google will be able to (and will need to) give users the option to go with more vivid colors. In fact, the vivid colors setting does not seem to do anything and perhaps it is not working as Google intended. I do not notice or care about any blue hue. I enjoy dark backgrounds and use dark themes whenever possible, so it is a non-issue for me.

I like the phone. It feels good in the hand and has worked relatively well The software is, of course, very smooth and quick, which is great.
Battery life was really crappy yesterday, but hopefully that will get better. I also notice that signal strength on AT&T is not very good compared to my other phones. I will have to see whether these items improve before deciding whether I will keep it.

Wow! This is brutal. I disagree with many of the points. Google can’t make a good phone and it’s embarrassing – BGR

I got as far as this: "While I enjoy the large display that’s almost edge-to-edge, the radius of the screen corners combined with how much space the bezels take up above and below the screen are infuriating to me. "

Really? Infuriating?

I knew at that point a couple of things:

1. There is no way in hell this guy is going to be able to write a fair review of this phone
2. This guy is someone who's opinion does not interest me at all. Not on any topic.

If a phone's corners infuriate you, you need to seriously reconsider your life and how you spend it, what's important and what's not.

Even if this guy is just using hyperbole as a literary device, he's using it way too soon and going way over the top. If he says he's infuriated by the corners, is the color profile going to inspire him to actually commit murder? Will he be climbing the tall tower with a rifle once he sees there's no headphone jack?

I would like to cordially invite this jerk to smoke a turd in hell, and the editor who hired him and decided his piece was worth publishing can join him there.

At least I now know that I don't need to bother spending any time looking for worthwhile content on bgr.com.

@nelamvr6 That'll teach you to read anything from BGR :-) That site is just about 100% click bate. I never link to them in any forum because they don't deserve the traffic.

Exactly, he sounds like the typical Android hater. His words are not valid.

Yeah, there's got to be something screwy going on with the lockscreen that's separate from the display's ability to display black since the black notifications look fine. Or, I should say, they would look fine if the lockscreen background didn't look like a crappy radial gradient.

I'm thinking that there's some sort of transparency issue at work, and that the quality of the lockscreen wallpaper is affected by the quality of the home screen wallpaper. I switched the home screen to that live wallpaper of the moon, and the lockscreen wallaper looks a lot better now. At least until it gets to full moon phase, I guess

"Smoke a turd in hell"
I am still laughing at that!
Thanks!!

And yes. The author of that piece has serious HUAD.
