poll: camera freezing?

Does your Note9's camera freeze?

I have the update as well for Verizon 128. Unfortunately it didn't fix the issue. Updated 2 days ago. Video camera freezing already.

Unfortunately, after my second day on the update, my camera is also back to freezing.

Yes, it appears that the ARJ5 update (with the "camera improvements") does not address the problem at all. Unfortunately, that probably indicates that Samsung has decided that fixing the problem is either impossible or too expensive. So their strategy now is to stonewall, refusing to publicly acknowledge the problem or even inform their own tech-support staff.

At this point, I think the only hope would be to try to attract media attention to the problem (preferably with videos that show the freezing), or else to bring a class-action lawsuit. According to the above poll, about a third of Note9s seem to have the camera-freeze problem, so there should be no shortage of participants.

You cannot take a poll on an android forum and apply it to all Note 9s out there.

Why not? A poll always relies on a small sample that gets extrapolated to a larger population. Maybe the actual incidence in the larger population is 20% or 40% instead of 35%, but it's going to be substantial, because there's no reason to expect forum members to have a vastly greater rate of camera freezing than forum nonmembers.

It is possible for a poll here to show that there could reflect a larger issue at hand.

I had created a poll back in the Palm Pre days when I was interested in the phone and was researching it. People were trying to say it's just a small sample from a small community and not reflective of all owners out there but later showed not the case. Even Jim Cramer used this poll in discussing Palms issues. It's forums like this and Samsung's own community forum where Samsung finds issues by looking at high volume topics before they find it themselves... once they release the phone, they're on the next phone and only look into issues when they see a trend reported.

While there are substantial number of respondents with the problem here, lcs101 is correct, you cannot take a poll on an android forum and apply it to all Note 9s out there.

It doesn't matter whether forum members have the same rate of camera freezing. What matters is whether the respondents in the poll are self selected or randomly selected. This forum poll has only self selected participants therefore inferences drawn about the broader population may not be valid. For example, someone whose camera is freezing is more likely to read a thread named "poll: camera freezing."

I agree that self-selection is a potentially distorting factor. My point though is that it still gives us a rough idea of the overall prevalence. A random selection would be more accurate, but that's harder to obtain. A self-selected sample is still evidence, even though it's not the best possible kind of evidence.

Yes, I agree.

Not to belabor the point, but it really doesn't. There is nothing about this online poll to suggest those participating in it are anywhere close to representative of the population of Note 9 owners. Even if it actually were a random sample (which again, it's clearly not), such a small sample size would still mean it would have little value. All it can really tell us is that at least 21 people are having issues with their Note 9s freezing in this instance.

I didn't post on this Samsung comment site, but others from this site may have.

Not sure how to use Reddit, but here's a post.

So yes, this Android forum is a small percentage. But add it all up and it's quite a few.

The Google search (note 9 camera freezing) has a few reports on blogs as well.

To be clear, I am not suggesting there isn't a real problem. My point was solely a statistical one--that we cannot by any means estimate the percent of people having this problem from something like an online poll here (or Reddit thread or something comparable).

only been a few days but my Silver AT&T 128GB version doesnt have the issues described.

How long did it take to show up for those with the issue?

mine has NEVER froze, keep in mind only those with the problem are talking about it.

The lack of randomness is a much bigger issue than the small sample size here. Reasonable inferences about the broader population can be drawn from a surprising small sample if a statistically valid sampling approach used. As George Gallup said: "One spoonful can reflect the taste of the whole pot if the soup is well-stirred." We certainly don't have a well-stirred soup here, but there are other reports about this issue.

Yup, especially since I'm really just trying to estimate within, say, a factor of five of the actual value. The sample size is certainly adequate for that; and I'd guess that even the potentially biased sample is good enough for that, though it's hard to say for sure. At any rate, as far as I know it's the best sample we've got so far. :)

I don't disagree. (Though even the best sampling strategies cannot overcome too small of a sample, Gallup be damned). Either way, this poll is not at all reflective of general Note 9 experiences.

When we talk freezing - are we talking about a permanent freeze - meaning you have to press the Apps key to get out because everything is non responsive? Or is it just an intermittent freeze, but then it comes back to life.

I've experienced the latter on more than one occasion and it's annoying because I've missed some shots I wanted to take because it froze for a few seconds. AT&T 128GB

The latter for me and it's always seems to be after mins of use. Never initially but if I'm consistently zooming in or snapping videos it freezes a lot.
