Question on Nexus 6....trying to determine if for certain carrier.

I bought a Nexus 6 from a person. It originally came from Best Buy this year, in July.

Nothing on the box, nor the phone, states any certain carrier. When looking at my 5.1.1 build number, it is LYZ28M. I have been using it on ATT. Why does it have a, supposedly, T Mobile build number?

The original owner probably used it on T- Mobile and either flashed that image or received an OTA for that version because of having a T-Mobile SIM in it. When you move to Marshmallow, they're all on the same build number. The T - Mobile build doesn't have any impact on AT&T usage, it enables a couple features if you were to put a T-Mobile SIM in it.

Did it have LYZ28M out of the box? Or did it load as an OTA after you turned it on?

Nexus 6's can work with every carrier... fully support all their bands and telephony features. (cept AT&T's WiFi Calling, too new). If you are on AT&T, either flash LMY48W to have 5.1.1... but if you are in there, go to MRA58K. In 6, looks like they are doing away with the carrier specific builds, so that one is universal.

Then it most likely started out as life on the T-Mobile network, which was on a different set of images than AT&T during 5.1.1. At this point, you really should just load the AT&T supported factory image. Not sure what features you'll have, but at least that way you'll have everything that AT&T will need. But if you are going in there to load an image, I would just bypass 5.1.1 all together and go straight to 6.0. All those multiple 5.1.1 paths are converging in 6.0, so everyone will be on the same image (and you SHOULD start getting the security OTAs through AT&T again.)
