[RADIOS][VZW] Galaxy Nexus Radios and Installation Guide

If you live in or are currently in an area with frequent data handoffs then its much better to stick to 3G only (or wifi obv).. because the handoffs are slow and you'll see data drops, and additionally they bleed a battery dry. It's like that with every 4G phone on verizon, unfortunately.

When will that improve? When more towers in my area get 4G? I live in Arnold, MD (1 or 2 miles north of Annapolis) and I work in Lanham which is just outside of DC. There is currently 4G in Baltimore and DC and I think some parts of Annapolis, but of course there are areas where there is not 4G coverage.

I'm about 15 minutes from you and my 4G is awesome.

It will improve somewhat with better 4G coverage, yes... but mostly the hardware technology in the phones, as well as the software that controls network verification and authorization, which has to be accomplished on each 3G<->4G handoff, both have to be improved before the issue can really be considered better. I don't expect that to be tackled until at least the next generation of 4G antennas... just an educated guess, of course.

looks like im heading back to 4.0.2 radios... those were much better for me than the official 4.0.4 ones.

those who are unhappy wth 4.0.4, are the leaked ones working better for you?

the official 404 radios work better than any others for me but the leaked 404 was better than the 402/403 for me. some of it is unit specific, some of it is where you live i guess.

through the day, i went from official 4.0.4 radios, to leaked, to official 4.0.2, and back to official 4.0.4.... it was limited use, but i found that all 3 gave me similar signal strength and speedtest scores. 4g seemed to stabilize towards the end of the workday, so perhaps it was just a bunch of verizon customers streaming euro 2012 on their phones :p

i get about the same signal on all the radios, the real difference in the official 404 i notice is simply faster handoff between 3g, 4g, and wifi.

and the watch espn app ... dangerous to have at work with you :)

Until 4g was in my home area I kept my phone set to 3g. It was still very decent. I didn't want it toggling between 3g and 4g. That's just really a lot of battery use. Now there is 4 g in my home area and all is good
Use 3g till its decent in your area for 4g. Your phone will still work well

I'm about 15 minutes from you and my 4G is awesome.

So why do I get such bad handoffs between 3G and 4G then? If you are so close and the radios I am using are the same as you, why am I experiencing what I think is worse data drops? 3G is perfect but this is annoying how poorly my 4G connection seems at times.

These things are VERY location-sensitive. Where I work is a bit closer to Manhattan (and hence, better 4G coverage based on VZW's coverage maps) than my apartment in the north bronx.... However, at work I constantly get very weak 4G and consistent handoffs that eat up my battery if I don't switch to 3G only. At my apartment, 4G is just fine I can leave it on all the time, even though everything tells me it should see worse coverage than the job site (obviously I opt for wifi when I'm at the apt anyways, lol). But yeah, these things are very sensitive and specific, so don't be shocked that somewhere 15 minutes away gets that much better signal... my work versus apartment distance is only about 1 mile, lol, but the difference is very very tangible.

Oh well guess this is something that will improve eventually. How is AT&T LTE service and reliability btw? Just curious.

I wouldn't know at all, lol.

If it's anything like their normal service then it's not even comparable to VZW IMHO.

this is getting very frustrating.... my gnex just cant maintain a 4G signal today

im using the official 4.0.4 radios
im using the B38 O3 release with whatever kernel it comes with.

gonna try to flash back to M4 franco

i have no idea what else to do... the guy sitting 2 feet away from me with a stock LTE Gnex running official 4.0.4 release has no issues with LTE.... wtf

in fact, without touching my phone or moving it, after i toggle 4G on:

1. it sits at -83dBm for about 2 minutes
2. it drops to -103 dBm for about 3 min
3. LTE drops, it goes to 3G, with -83dBm

Is he on402 or 404 stock?
Did you try flashing a different radio??

No idea what the cause is. Sorry man

He is on official stock 404

Yesterday I tried a couple of diff radios but not today. I know roms don't affect signal but with B38 O3 today my phone was clocking over 160 degrees because of bad signal. Much better after going back to original B38 so well see what happens tomorrow

Well yeah remember the linaro builds are using some very experimental, untested coding, so anything is possible I suppose, lol.

so i went from B38 O3 to O2, but even that started glitching out on my phone, so i packed it up and went to B37. lo and behold, getting a much stronger LTE signal at work now, with official 404 radios

Signal strength aside, are you having terrible transitions between 3G and 4G? That is my largest gripe as it basically drops, turns off the radio, then the 3G comes on, but transition from 3G to 4G is seamless. Love this phone and custom ROMs, but the 4G to 3G transitions are driving me a lil crazy. Feel like 4G is unreliable.
