My Droid X has worked great for the last month no problems at all. Starting yesterday I received a call and noticed that the ring tone was not right. It is some generic ring ring sound. I have gone through all settings and changed the ring tone to different ones and here is the strange thing. When I call my phone 2 or 3 out of 6 times it will play the ring tone I have selected but the other times it plays this generic ring. All my "test" calls were from the same land line. Any ideas?

Thanks

ps I have also made a custom ring tone from an mp3 with the same results. Sometimes it plays sometimes it is the generic tone.

I have heard this a few times and I have noticed that a number of people did not realize that the ringer has a habit of changing to default because when you use the storage drive option the ringers cant be accessed because they are stored on the SD Card Are you using a 3rd party app to change ringers, also are you charging on a pc?

I am not using a third party app for my ringers. The only time I have plugged in to my pc was to transfer music to the card. I have uninstalled all apps that i have installed the last couple of days and have reset the phone with a battery pull. Still same issue.

I have this issue too. I noticed it started after I moved the ringtones from one location on my sd card to another. I'm going to try removing them altogether, then adding them back in tomorrow.

Try placing ringers in SD/Media/Audio/Ringtones (Create Ringertones folder if not present), if you place them here you can see ringers under stock menu for ringers without any other apps.

Have you done a hard reset not just a restart and start with nothing installed but stock apps, usually issues like this is software not hardware issue. The more apps installed the more chance of one interfering with another, the market is great but the concept of open source usually leads to a developer modifying the code a bit to create new features.

Try backing up data and then try a hard reset by going to:
Settings/Privacy/Factory Data Reset

I had this same problem is was driving me crazy. After days of checking different things I found out that it was a call blocker app that was causing the problem. I have not had a problem since even with mounting to computer. My ring tones are the way they are supposed to be. So I would suggest checking your apps.

Thanks for the suggestions. One other question I am new to android (had BB for several years) what should I backup and will a hard reset wipe the sd card or just the phone itself. Will a hard reset affect the root status of my phone (will I need to root again after the reset)
Thanks

1. What should I backup?
Make sure that Backup Assistant has the most recent update of personal data like contacts and messages.

Backup Apps APK Files if you have app for this, I use MyBackUp app from the market that backup contacts, email, sms, apps apk files and system settings or since you are rooted you can use Titanium Backup paid edition, but if you do not backup the market will still have all bought items saved to your account.

2. Will a hard reset wipe the sd card or just the phone itself?
No, the SD will not be wiped with a hard rest.

3. Will a hard reset affect the root status of my phone (will I need to root again after the reset?
No you will not lose root when a hard reset is done, the only way to reverse a root is by running unroot app (If developer has one) or you do a OS upgrade.

+1 on what wildman said.....hopefully the reset works for you it didn't for me mine was the app that was causing the problem.

I noticed when I hard reset with root that it breaks busybox. wget, tar, vi, top, etc don't work anymore. If your not a linux command line nerd you will be ok. Root apps will still work.

I already had the ringtones in that folder after I created it. Then I moved them into a different folder, changed my mind and moved them back. After that I started having the problem. I removed them all last night and I added them back today. If that doesn't work, I will delete the whole folder, then add it again.

I have found the source of my problems. After doing a complete hard reset my problem was gone. I then started adding back my apps one at a time and testing my ringtone after each install. Turns out that the Norton Mobile Security app was causing my ringtone problem. To bad I liked the ability to remotely lock my phone with this app.
I have installed Norton 3 times and each time the ringtone problem comes back so I am confident that this was causing my problem.
Thanks for all of the input on this thread and good luck to others having similar problems.

I am glad you found you problem app. To others with this problem it seems to be the apps that are causing the problem. It's time consuming but I would check your apps first. It dosent seem to be a specific app cause my was caused by a call blocker app. So you will have to check all of your apps one at a time.

That's funny, Norton seems to give issues no matter what its on, pcs have issues with Norton also... This is one reason i wasn't brave to try it on mu device...... But glad you isolate your issue.
