First, thanks to Paul for the release of ACE ROM 2.0, I'm sure it will be rock-solid before long just like the previous versions. My concern (below) is probably best addressed by Paul himself.

I am currently running ACE ROM 1.7 based on Froyo EB13/EXT4. I understand I can upgrade to ACE 2.0 by flashing the EC05 modem in CWM and then flashing the 2.0 ROM - easy enough.

With future upgrading and ROM flashing in mind, I was wondering if it would be beneficial for the long-term stability of the phone to Odin back to Eclair, do a stock upgrade to EC05 and then the EC05/EXT4 conversion before flashing ACE 2.0 (and subsequent versions), rather than stay with EB13/EXT4 for future updates.

I'd like to hear Paul's opinion on which version he thinks is better for future ACE updates - EB13/EXT4 or EC05/EXT4? Or does it really matter? My main reason for asking is I've read the thread about stock EC05 problems/concerns and it seems to have its own can of worms. I'm sure much of that is fixed in ACE 2.0 but...maybe not all? I've been quite happy with ACE 1.7 and would rather not throw a wrench into things just for the sake of following the "official" Samsung EC05 upgrade path - especially if there are no benefits in doing so.

So Paul...what say you? Thanks again for all your efforts!

You can really go either way right now while your running custom ROMs.

If your originally on EB13 rooted/EXT4, once you flash a EC05 based ROM like ACE/Syndicate/Bonsai/midNIGHT your technically then running EC05.

So at this point its really not going to matter if your EB13 or EC05 before you flash an EC05 based ROM. I have done it both ways, EB13 stock then rooted/EXT4 converted to a EC05 ROM and EC05 stock then rooted/EXT4 converted to EC05 custom ROM...

Just to amend what I said earlier...with the stock twilight kernel, battery was a liitle quick to drain. With vision kernel, bettery is better. With a couple of push email accounts and low 3G signal, on idle I am losing 1-2% per hour.
1-2% per hour is about the normal...

Finally crashed

Well, I finally did something that caused ACE to crash. I waited to see if I could kill the program, but none of the lights would come on and buttons didn't respond. The program was Touchdown by Nitrodesk. It was a bit of a surprise, since I've been using it frequently in the last 24 hours. Not sure what it was with respect to the program. Everything else has been nicely managed without FCs.

I've been running all afternoon on 1200/100 performance with good battery life. Of the charger around noon and 8 hours later at 47 percent. That's with the crash/reboot and doing frequent Touchdown polling to update my email/contacts/calendar and making some phone calls.

This is a nice ROM, Paul. A little slower than SRF, but this is surpassed by reliability.

Is what I notice in speed related to the journaling? Or is this just the make of ACE? (I'm sure there are lots of reasons.)

FYI = Update : ACE 2.0 has been running fine with the exception of occasional freezes at various points ( mainly if I try to Shut-Off but also happened twice on Market , twice while adjusting settings on Launcher Pro , and once each when I first went into AppMonster , MyBackUp Root and Titanium Backup = but like I mentioned to Paul previously I had similar freezes on SRF as well so it might just be my phone or the proverbial "user error")... on a side note I got a Quadrant Score of 1440 if that means anything to anyone. Oh, and another Update = I have NOT encountered anymore problems with WiFi losing connection

Paul, do you have the themes/wallpapers from ACE 1.7? I would like to use them with 2.0.

Wallpapers I have. The themes mostlikely won't work correctly, I do plan on updating the ver 1.7 battery mod over to EC05. Give me a day or two and I will see what I can work up. Seeing how v2.0 is running very well I can work on some of these other projects.

I CW restored back to 1.7 and updated to EC07 modem. Have to go to FL tomorrow on business and was seeing too many FC's after flash. My Backup could not restore many of my apps as well. I will need to spend some time playing around with it when I get back later this week.

Still have my wifi issue. I've found a lot of people saying it's a random (with some phones) EC05 issue. I wondered if it could be removed by flashing back to stock eclair then updating to EC05 via sprint then flash the EXT4 and ROM? (doubtful- but ready to try anything... just not tonight)

1st time out- my battery drained in 2 hours.. YEP 2. After a full charge too. Powered down, charged overnight when off and then powered on- seemed to help. Not sure of my current battery drain just yet. Tomorrow at work is the big test.

My 3g speed is so dismal, I'm considering trying SRF for the data cap removal alone- but my data cap issues have nothing to do with this rom I know. I had 3g data issues since EC05 came out OTA despite being on DK28...can't explain that - but the timing was about right.

4g has always been hit or miss- 4g goes to sleep and sometimes never wakes up- the Market can be especially painful. Sometimes I wonder if launch Epics are just junk and I need to call Asurion.

In general, restoring app apks from a backup is a bad idea. Can usually lead to errors and such, especially if you're coming from a different version. The best thing I've found so far is to use something like appbrain to make a backup list and then use that to re-download the apps (through some list management).

Did you calibrate the battery? If you had a relatively low battery when you first flashed the ROM, that can throw off the battery readings and such. I've had similar issues where my phone would die in 4 hours or so just sitting there and used this: Calibrate Battery thread - This is how you do it! [Archive] - xda-developers There's also an app on the market that does a similar function: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&feature=search_result

This is the first time I've done this, so this could just be me. Everything seems great, but the UI for the landscape lockscreen is glitched. The "end" imaged of the lock and mute buttons are horizontal, while the phone unlocked vertically.

Paul, not only has the quality of your ROM increased, so has your thread building skills, very nice stuff

Graphics alignment error that has existed on the ASOP lockscreen way back since Eclair 2.1 (DI18). Nothing I can change about it.

Thanks on the ROM. Forum thread, new options added for us Advisers/Mods to make our threads more professional looking. Glad you like the new look. :)

Paul,

I have had four crashes on ACE 2.0. 1 in the Market, 1 in picture frame, 2 in Power OFF.

I ran ACE with minimal inidents all weekend. I ran SetCPU at 200-1200 with no problems, other than the original shut down to flash the Kernel it stopped there ( I guess you can say I hit a brick wall) lol.. Batery pull then flashed the kernel and was fine for a long time. I increased SetCPU to 1300 max. and it started looking jiggy, maybe it needed to build up but I got nervous so set it back to 200-1000 setting for better battery test and I had the crash in the Market after heavy sufring there, and then another shortly after in building picture frame from a pic in the SD card, it just froze up.. Then in one case Launcher Pro did not regenerate any of my widgets so I powered off again to see if this would help and I had a crash again there at the brick wall. I put SetCPU back to 1200 max. and no problems thus far.

This info is just for FYI., as I stated before the ROM ran wonderfully all weekend long with the exceptions of these few incednts, and I was fairly agressive with usage and settings all weekend. The camera took great pictures I might add..

In LP settings and saving desktop settings I noticed that it states LP does not have the ability to rebuild widgets when recovering homepage settings. Is this also the case with LP+ ???

Nice work on the ROM, very asthetically pleasing.. I like the battery mod a lot. My preference for SMS is not bubble, so I'll look at flashing an alternate for that.

It appears that where my crashes were -are consistant with some other posts as well.

Thanks!!!!!!!

Thanks for the input. Sounds like some of your crashing issues could be kernel related. Pushing to OC can have varying results for different devices. Something we will have to keep an eye on as time goes by.

Overall the ROM is not modded very much aside from many of the common mods found out there so I don't really believe anything I did has anything to do with most of the few problems being reported, but anything is possible.

You question on LP vs LP+, I don't have LP+ so I'm not sure. Overall LP is a nice launcher and works well so that is why I went with it, plus it has so much customizing that can be done by the user which makes it a plus. Feel free to flash any launchers you want if LP doesn't work out for you.

Paul,

I installed the Glaxy Tab Email apk into ACE to and i get a FC every time i open the app.
do you have the apk for the stock email app so i can flas it back into the phone?

Thanks.

OK - new update ; for some reason I am still getting freezes at various points as mentioned on my previous entry to include Power Off / Market / opening already installed apps / changing Beautiful Widgets on homescreen ; I have to pull battery to get fix each time ; I reflashed again ( now please remember I was having same types of issues with other ROMs except Bonsai and TrulyEpic Rebirth - so it might be my phone or "user error" ). I don't really wanna have to do Odin again (= did once already after the first time I tried using ACE 2.0) ... this is a REALLY cool ROM and I want to use it. HELP !
