[ROM] Cognition

Hello all, this is my first post on these forums, and I have a quick question.
I'm relatively inexperienced with flashing roms, but I am probably going to flash cognition.

My question:
I backed up my current ROM with clockwork mod recovery.
Does flashing a ROM erase all your date? (Apps, Files, etc)

I'm assuming not, since if I don't like cognition, I can just restore my backup of my previous phone using clockwork, no?

any help would be appreciated, thanks

No matter what you are doing ALWAYS back up if you don't want to lose data. Apps are no big deal and you can reinstall but it does take some time.

Photos and self created content, are of course, not replaceable.

I just got a replacement Captivate and put Cognition on it and I'm not sure what it would have erased but it did reset the phone during the process.

Cognition is pretty sweet and now I have 2.2 and best of all a Hot Spot on a network that can handle simultaneous voice and data...take that Verizon iPhone.

Okay so I realized what I'll do
I'm going to use titanium backup to backup my apps and contacts, use SMS Backup and Restore to backup my texts, and just copy my files to my computer through the usb
I hear that to install cognition without any conflicts you have to master clear the phone, and I'm always a fan of a fresh start, so that's what I'll do.
If there's anything I'm missing, please point it out haha

Just flashed cognition 3.04 and its working beautifully.

@Franksig i haven't had the NAV issue you've described

Before you update to 2.2, be sure to

1) Find your android ID, write it down (use an app, from market)
2) Get your unlock code, write it down (use an app, from XDA forum)

Both these things are irrevocably lost when updating from 2.1 to 2.2.

Hope this helps, if so, please consider pressing thanks.

AoN ,

Thank you so much for your contribution, could you please suggest an app to help with this?

and what will you need your Android ID for ?

Your Android ID is how the market (and some apps- particularly online games) identifies you. I used Android ID Changer to get my ID, IMEI etc, and to reset after updating. I wrote them down.

I didn't get my unlock code, so can't help you "from experience". But... I'd take a look at ShortFuse' SuperOneClick, which should be able to help you:

forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682

Write the unlock code down- it'll enable you to use a SIM that's not from your carrier (which can be useful if you travel overseas). If you're into ebay, you might be able to command a higher price for an unlocked phone.

Hope this helps,

AoN

Cognition Default Wallpaper

I just flashed cognition recently, and the default wallpaper looks like this
device.png

Now when looking at the wallpaper gallery, this isn't available.
Does anyone know how to get it back without reflashing cognition?

Extract the Cognition zip file onto your computer's desktop and go to /system/framework. Copy framework-res.apk onto your phone's SD card. Using ASTRO file manager, view the contents of framework-res.apk - you'll find the default wallpaper in these locations: "framework-res.apk/res/drawable/default wallpaper.jpg" & "framework-res.apk/res/drawable-hdpi/default wallpaper.jpg". You can copy the wallpaper and then paste it onto the root of your SD card.

I did a backup with titanium and one with rom manager but I didnt write down my android id or my unlock code prior to flashing . Has this information changed since I rooted and flashed cog 2.3b8? I am planning to put 3.4 on soon, so should I return ther phone to stock using my bacups to obtain this information?

The need to write down your android ID seems to have faded. There is an app called ANDROID ID CHANGER that is good for backing up and restoring the ID. Recommend it if you care about it.

That said, I have not NEEDED to do anything with my Android ID since the early cognition days. I think the problem stemmed from how the ROM cookers were packaging their ROM, making a mistake in the early days to have their Android ID distributed with the ROM, making thousands of people have the same ID.

Pretty sure they all randomize this now, and it is not required from the Market side in any way that I can see. I stopped bothering with the Android ID about 8 flashes ago, and have not seen one problem.

I think it is safe to ignore this issue now. If you don't want to ignore it, get the Android ID changer app.

what's up with the designgears site?

does anyone know what's going on with the Designgears site?

I just downloaded his firebird kernel this morning... what is the problem? His Cognition Wiki is still running as well. It is possible since it sounds like he is joining up with Team Whiskey, that perhaps he is moving some of his resources, or updating them, to merge with TW and is temporarily down? Not sure however, since it seems ok at the moment.

Temporary technical difficulties, or are you still seeing the problem?

When I try to download 3.04, or the earlier versions, I get directed to a page on ponack.net showing a 404 Error.....where whould one download the latest cognition rom?

well, I certainly see that now, but it's not reachable through most of the links I've clicked on. thanks for pointing me to it.

I sure hope they fix the bluetooth voice dialing issues soon as California drivers have to use this to avoid tickets.

You can use Voice Search to dial, you just need to have your phone reasonably close to your head for it to hear you. BT works just fine on Cog, it is only the listen over BT mic that does not. No need to violate any laws... same here in MN.

I use Voice Search to do it, make sure your mount is as close as reasonableness allows to your mouth so it hears you better.

If you mean BT listen over mic for dialing, then no... it probably never will. You need an i9000 ROM for that. If you like the feel of Cognition, load up Perception to get that feature and keep things pretty much the same.

What is an i9000 ROM? and what's the difference?
