[ROM] TrulyEpic Rebirth v1.5 AC - no planned EB13 update :'(

All steps I took to go from Epic 4G stock to TrulyEpic ROM with sensor and GPS fixed.

This is for all of those who wanted to see simple step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade from stock Epic 4G to the TrulyEpic ROM.

Migrating from stock EPic 4G to TrulyEpic Rebirthv 1.2 ROM

Starting point with all the links to the necessary files:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-roms-hacks/52718-rom-trulyepic-rebirth-v1-2-ac-edition.html

First, must go to Froyo and have EXT4 filesystems before can use Truly Epic ROM. (deodex version is recommended)

Dowload for DK28: SPH-D700-DK28-Extended-D (Deodexed Version)

Step 1.
Boot your phone into download by powering off your phone holding 1 on the keyboard and holding power til you see the little Yellow digger.

Step 2.
On your computer, launch the included odin.exe and select the included victory pit and under PDA select the included SPH-D700-DK28-Extended.tar

Step 3.
Plug in the usb cable. (if it's done right you should see a yellow Com device.)

Step 4.
Click Start and wait.

That's it. You've got DK28 Release and clockwork preinstalled, rooted, and ready to use.To get into Clockwork, hold Volume Down Camera and Power to flash your own rom.

Before formatting to EXT4, Go ahead and copy TruplyEpic ROM, leave it in it's ".zip" format, and place it on your phone's SD card.

---------

Formatting to EXT4
You must have Froyo DK28 (Android 2.2) before continuing to the next step.

Download OneClickRootCWM3.zip and extract it to a folder on your Windows desktop.

On your phone, push MENU, then select Applications > Development, then enable USB debugging and connect your phone to your computer via USB.

Now double click "run.bat" in the folder

If the command prompt asks you to restart adb, you need to go into Windows Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del on your keyboard) and end adb in the process tab, then go into the folder from Step 2 and double-click on the "adb" file to restart adb.

If the command prompt says "device not connected", disconnect the phone and reboot it, turn debugging mode back on, reconnect the phone via USB, and rerun the "run.bat" file again. If you're still getting "device not connected", try repeating these steps one at a time or in a different order, for example just kill adb and rerun "run.bat" or only reboot the phone and then rerun "run.bat".

If successful, will see many "read 262144 bytes" by the time it's done.

Reboot to clockwork, will automatically start the converting to EXT4 filesystems

After rebooting back to the phone, and it's on USB with debugging option turned on:
Run the adb.exe on PC

adb shell mount (to confirm mounts are now EXT4 filesystems)

If need to return to RFS filesystem (Samsung's filesystem) can use ODIN with official Epic 4G stock DI18 update, SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar to cleanly go back to stock.

---------

Turn off your phone. Now hold volume down + camera button + power button simultaneously until you see this screen (ClockworkMod Recovery)

(Note: if instead of this screen you get a similar screen but with blue text, go to the apply update.zip option at the top and select it. This should take you into the screen you see above.)

(To navigate in Clockwork, use the volume up and volume down keys. To select options, use the camera button.)

Once you are in Clockwork, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2)
Make a backup of your current system using Clockwork (this is a safety precaution - NOT DO skip this step). Go to the 6th option of the Clockwork main screen, "backup and restore", and select it. Then select "backup". Once Clockwork finishes backing up your system, go to Step 3.

Step 3)
Before flashing your ROM you need to clear data in order to avoid clashes. Go to the 3rd option in the Clockwork main screen, "wipe data/factory reset", select it, and then select "yes".

(IMPORTANT: in Clockwork before flashing: wipe data, wipe cache, advanced>wipe dalvik-cache twice each)

Step 4)
Go to the 5th option on the main Clockwork screen, "install zip from SD card", and select it. Go to the 2nd option on the next screen, "choose zip from sdcard", and select it. Now navigate to the zip file of your ROM, select your zip file, and then select "yes". Once done, reboot, and you now have a custom ROM installed on your phone. You're all done!

----------------

To fix force closes after restoring stock apps: Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All (at the top)>(app)>Clear data and Clear cache

-------------
The screen orientation (screen should automatically orient itself when you rotate the display from portrait to landscape) doesn’t quite work right or is delayed a few seconds. This is because the sensor needs to be calibrated.

Run ConnectBot, in dropdown menu in lower left corner select Local
Type in any name in the nickname box
su (hit enter)

/system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha (hit enter)

Then follow the instructions on screen to calibrate then finally reboot the phone!

----------------
Fixing the broken GPS
(first test to verify that it doesn't work by turning off wifi and leave GPS on then use Google Maps to see if can't lock on your location)

To fix,
first get your MSL code :
Since you are running TrulyEpic ROM, you already have su access to your phone.
Run ConnectBot, in dropdown menu in lower left corner select Local
Type in any name in the nickname box
Type su then hit enter
Type this:
getprop | grep MSL (hit enter)
ril.MSL is the MSL code

Once you have your MSL Code,
remove the SD Card and
Enter ##786# on the dialer keypad.

You will see two options: View and Reset. Tap on the Reset option and you will get a prompt to enter the MSL code.

At this point you will be asked if you want to do a manufacter's reset, enter yes.

The phone will shut down and reset itself after a few seconds.

Once the process is complete, the phone will go through a hands free activation. After the activation process, updates may be downloaded and installed. Now that all updates have been performed, you may check to see if your GPS is working by going to Google Maps. You should be able to lock in GPS signal in under 10 seconds. Thats it. Your GPS woes are over.

The "GPS Test" app from Market can be used to verify that your Epic 4G can see the satellites.

Its me again... 2 more questions for the powers that be...

1- is there a way to make my call log just that, a call log? Preflash it showed all calls and only calls. Now its eithe everything, including messages is shown, or I have to pick (display all sent calls, or all received, or all missed, can't pick all 3 together)

2- is that hulu app compatable with the green font clockwork? I am getting a viewsonic gtablet... an apparently the orange font clockwork isn't stable or something on it. Can that hulu app be installed on anything rooted with android???

Not possible, if I install say Pandora as soon as I move the app to SD the widget disappears from the path: menu > add > widgets

The app still works fine, just no widget. Also if I install the app and don't move the program to SD the widget works fine too.

As I mentioned earlier, another program Audiogalaxy (which lost the widget when moving to SD) so happened to receive an update tonight and after installing the update the widget reappeared. I am certain if I uninstalled Audiogalaxy and then reinstalled it as soon as I move the app to SD the widget will be gone.

Also found another small issue: Sprint Football Live & Nascar are not working, both give an error message which says they are only available for Sprint and Nextel users. Sprint Nav & TV both work fine and Hotspot seems like it will work.

I also observed the problem with widgets and icons disapearing when using AMLauncher and apps moved to the SD card. This does NOT happen with the TWLauncher (Touchwiz). My guess is that an updated AMLauncher will fix this issue for apps moved to SD.

As for your Sprint Football and NASCAR, you simply need to disconnect from wi-fi and run these native off of Sprint's 3G/4G data network. This is a protection from users on outside carriers from running these Sprint apps on non-Sprint phones. Sprint TV is the same.

I believe Ragnarokx had mention that the original dev of TrulyEpic is or will be at work on a new updated AMLauncher. Finish date unknown currently.

This sounds valid enough. I'm a NASCAR fan and haven't tried flashing the NASCAR app since the season finished last year. I will have to check this out. Thanks for the tip, especially if it works!

Here is another set of Yahoo, I use sbc global, settings that work. I spent hours, on phone with Advanced Tech support, trying to get my email to work, do not like the Yahoo program because I do not want push mail. Had an Evo before this, worked fine, so tried its settings - works flawlessly for me.

I use K-9 -these settings would not work on this rom for me, so still use K-9 which is so customizable

Go to settings, enter beginning email info and then choose Manual, next won't work.
I use Imap, different than above

Incoming Server
Your use name
Your pass word
Imap server - android.imap.mail.yahoo.com
Port 993
Securirty SSL
Leave Imap path prefis as optional

Click next, it goes to outgoing

SMTP Server - android.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port - 465
Security Type SSL
check require sign-in
User name
passord, hit next

It checks and works for me. I used this setup on Eclair, DK28, but for some reason stock email on Yahoo didn't work, so went back to K-9.

So feedback from yahoo, sbc people might help to see what one works or is best.:)

These settings worked like a charm for my Yahoo Small Business email acct!!! Perfect.

Just a word to everyone posting on here who have had problems or issues; please remember to completely read the instructions, sometimes twice, before proceeding. It also helps to print out the instructions and follow them to a the letter to complete your task.

To the chefs that take the time to create and develop ROMS and also provide detailed instructions on how to install the ROMS in here, GREAT JOB!!! Thank you. :)

hmm i did what you said, Install mess abit around, then restarted with the widgets on. and currently, things are fine, possibly my app backups got corrupted?... not sure possibility maybe? Though when i first start after i installed a few free apps from the market place, the sdcard scanner starts running, but the phone is on its homepage but without icons at all can't really scroll through the extra windows ect.. its like frozen, then after the scanner stops running then everything loads up right after the scanner stops. Should it be this way?

Anytime Media Scanner is running your phone will slow down and be unresponsive, that's normal for any stock or custom ROM.

My power button is now acting like a back button. If I hold it down I can shut it off but a short
Press is no longer putting it to sleep. I'm not sure if I changed any settings. Any suggestions?

Did you restore any type of backup after flashing the ROM?

When you restored your backup after flashing the ROM it broke the call log mod. This ROM normally displays only calls in the log. Copy this apk file to /system/app to fix.

hmm, for some odd reason my contacts don't work, I click the icon, but i get a black screen :/.
a restart fixed it..lol

Interesting about the touchwiz launcher, luckily these are not widgets I use but I wanted to report what I was seeing.

The Nascar and Football apps are not working on 3G/4G.

If you can't get sprint tv to work(or your 3g/4g connection is unreliable), you can always check out atdhe.net and see what's on. They have a TON of sports programming on there. The quality is alright, and it works fine on my phone. Whenever I'm at work, I'll put something on(for example, Oregon vs Auburn NCG I had to work an over-night shift, watched the whole thing without a hitch).

Maybe not quite as convenient as an application, but still quite useful imo.

Well this is my first post, and I just had to chime in. I did the rom with the mini theme 1.0 and I love it. My phone is noticeably faster in all aspects.

My first experience in rooting has been fantastic so far. Thanks a ton to all the brilliant people out there that spent all sorts of time creating this, keep up the good work!

Wow, awesome, got a 1339 on Quadrant after installing this. Very awesome!!! This is my first root and everything went very smoothly on first try. Thanks to everyone who have been working very hard in providing us the best!

I tried searching this thread, but I'm also going to ask.

I'm assuming we still don't have voice dialing over bluetooth?

It's the ONLY feature I wanted from 2.2...

Ugh...

It's supposed to increase upload and/or download speeds. I only added it because people kept asking for it, but it's really not effective and not worth flashing.

Notices on TER

I haven't noticed and haven't gotten any reports of excessive lag when switching between landscape and portrait. Could there be something running on your system that's bogging it down? Have you tried rebooting or closing background apps?

The window transitions are definitely something that half of the people seem to like and half don't. You can always try flashing a theme that has them if you'd like them in this ROM. I can look into making a flashable zip to add them in but I don't have a lot of theming experience so it may take a little while.

Hi all -
I've downloaded and used this TrulyEpicRebirth ROM and so far have enjoyed it. However a few things that I've noticed are below. I am using ADW Launcher.

As with the quoted message, I have terrible lag to no switching when going from portrait view to landscape just by tilting the phone. In dk28 from a base Froyo rom I had the switch move very fast. Now, even if I pull out the keyboard it takes upwards of 20sec to switch to landscape. Just by tilting the phone it might, on occasion move. Other times when I'm plugged in for recharging (power) or to a usb charge it will be in landscape mode when the phone is clearly in a portrait type position.

Oh Noes. While reading many posts and keeping this on an alternate tab, I had the phone attached via USB and downloaded the TWLock Screen. I kept attempting to hit down volume+camera+power but it just kept powering on and off. As I posted above, I use ADW launcher. But after 3 times of power on and off, it force closes everything and I can only use the TW Launcher. Eek. Now I can't even use that. Tried accessing Market (using 2.2.11) now I get a black screen and even TW dies.
Finally able to get the system to reboot. But now almost all my apps are force close. I had no issues previously. I was able to finally install the TWLock screen (and that works) but even using the ROM launcher most apps are force closed, even after uninstalling them.
Too bad I have a job interview in the morning and won't be able to read posts and potential fixes until much later in the day. Bummer.

For recharging, I too mostly use the USB (via a hub) on both my netbook and desktop computers. Is there a way to get more than .07A for output?

As Epic users, we're still officially waiting on Froyo, yet Gingerbread and Honeycomb are announced. With GB out (in circles) how likely are you to make this a GB fix or just wait for a HC update? I don't want to put too much pressure on you. (no smiley, it's now an @)!

Thanks again so much for your help Rag and Paul.

The Nascar and Football apps are not working on 3G/4G.

I used CW3 to install the "Sprint Apps" .zip Ragnarokx has listed on page 1. After doing this I was able to run successfully both Sprint Nascar and Football.

I just ran the Football application again, and observed it took a small update (and asked me to take a moment to fill out a survery :p). Doing an About on Football it now reports as version 2.2.44 after the update.

I also ran Nascar again, it also worked fine. Under the Settings and Help, Customer Support link it reports itself as v3.3.6 and operates perfectly under TrulyEpic.

I can only suggest that you try applying only the "Sprint Apps" .zip and see if they work the same for you. And again, these only work with the native Sprint (non-Wi-Fi) data connection.

The behavior you're describing is completely abnormal. First thoughts: Did you convert to an EXT4 filesystem? Did you restore any type of backup? Did you wipe before installing the ROM? Were you on Froyo before installing the ROM?

As for Gingerbread and Honeycomb, that's a pretty tall order. There's actually a team of people working on porting Gingerbread - when they put out something usable we can revisit a major TrulyEpic Rebirth update.
