Rs988 nougat 7.0 update.

Very irritating that LG continues to make this a "security patch" issue when customers are clearly referring to the Android 7.0 update. What puzzles me is that I received the 2017-01-01 security patch a day after I purchased my unlocked LG G5 this month and Google Assistant shortly thereafter, but there evidently is no connection to the update which I have not and don't believe I will receive because my carrier is non-contract.

I sent an email to LG and below is their response

Dear Vignesh
This is a staff of LG Product Security Response Team(LG PSRT)
First of all, I’m very sorry for late Nougat update.
Android 7.0 update will be released at the beginning of May.

Again, LG apologize at late update.

Regards,

LG PSRT

This is good to hear but does not address whether the unlocked rs988 no contract carrier LG G5 is included. If only LG would clearly address this because so far their responses have been very conflicting, depending on who one speaks with at LG.

Thanks for that. A poster on an AT&T site stated that the update would have to come from LG because, as I suspected, contract carriers do not provide updates to unbranded, unlocked no contract phones because the build for each is different so hopefully LG will come through. LG would do well to improve its reputation by giving consistent answers.

Lol..so after swearing off LG due to the abandonment of the RS988 model...I went out and bought a G6 (carrier model this time, Telus). I am still pissed about the RS988 G5 experience, but wow, they actually hit it out of the park with the G6. I had contemplated waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S8, but I had an S7 Edge previously and hated the edge screen (the palm of my thumb always caused the screen to freak out).

I kept my G5...maybe one day it will see Nougat. It will be a good backup phone.

Why, why would you put yourself in this situation, especially for the G6, it has nothing special, it is now just so middle of the pack in spec

I think the 18:9 screen with an 80% screen/body ratio is an advantage, and LG have implemented it very well. I think this qualifies as "special" vs. other phone currently out there. It fits perfectly in my hand. Other than GS8, which I know I will hate because of the edge screen, I can't think of another model coming that I'd be interested in. I don't care that the G6 has the SD821 and 4GB ram...real world performance is snappy enough for me. :-)

Here is what I sent to LG today - 5 May, 2017

Hello,

I have owned several LG smartphones over the years and have always been pleased with the equipment and support I have received from LG.

All that changed when I purchased a new unlocked LG G5 (RS988 version) so that I could have the ability to utilized any US-based cellular service I desired.

Since this purchase, I have found that updates to the phone's firmware and security updates have been woefully slow in arriving.

The most recent frustration has been with the expected upgrade from Android 6 to Android 7. Reading through many forums it appears that virtually every other variant of the LG G5 has already received this update. As my phone is not tied to any particular US carrier, I have no recourse to acquire the Android 7 update from a source other than LG. While other phone manufacturers have already started rolling out updates to the initial Android 7 release, I and other LG G5 (RS988) owners have yet to receive the initial Android 7 update.

How can a corporation such as LG ignore an entire segment of their customer base by not updating their phone operating system to the latest version while continuing to tout even newer version of phones they have created and released.

I would hate to think that I made a $500+ mistake in buying what was at the time LG's latest flagship phone but more and more it appears that is the case. My son purchased an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 the same time I purchased my LG G5 (as well as a G5 for my wife) and he has had no problem receiving the Android 7 update from Samsung. Perhaps I will need to rethink the loyalty to LG I have had for the past six years and move to a company that cares to provide promised updates to their phone's software.

Please provide me with information on when I will receive the Android 7 (or better yet the most recent version of the Android operating system) for my LG G5 (RS988)
