Hi,

My Samsung Galaxy S5e won't do a Software Update - it says "Registering device..." for 1 minute and then it says "Registration failed".

Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions? I have already Factory Reset the device and no change.

Thanks,
Gina

I have the same issue. In fact I've had the same issue with two different brand new S5e tablets bought straight from Samsung, they both do that right out of the box. I'm in Canada, one is the 6gb Wifi model and the other is the regular 4gb WiFi model.

At first I assumed it was doing this because there were simply no updates but now I don't know. After I learned that the April security update was out, I was able to update the tablet by hooking it up to my Windows PC and using Samsung Smart Switch for Windows.

They both still do the Registration Failed bit even after installing the April patch this way.

It's very annoying and I couldn't find any information about this online.

The new tab I got cleared this issue up for me - but here's something you can try that I ran across while searching. Find out what your WAN IP address is. Reset your modem and make sure you get assigned a new IP address from your ISP (this may take you doing MAC cloning in your router). Check the WAN IP after this and make sure it's not the same as the one you started with. Then try and do the update.

Good idea but they were doing that on multiple different WiFi networks, like at home, at work, etc.

But actually right after typing my reply, I decided to try to do the software update using a VPN connection to the USA and wouldn't you know it, it worked flawlessly. The device Registration bit went through successfully right away and it actually checked for updates and didn't find any (I already have the latest version).

Then I disabled the VPN, went back to my Canadian IP and tried again. It's no longer trying to register the device but now it stalls at "checking for updates". Looks like Samsung never expected anyone in Canada to buy this tablet :-)

Something must be messed up on their end.

Are you connecting on a 2.4GHz wifi or 5GHz? If you're not already, try connecting via a 2.4GHz wifi band and doing the update check.

Mmm, very strange. My home WiFi is a 5ghz router and I just did another test.

Connected to 5ghz home WiFi, using my Canadian ISP WAN IP (Videotron): software update times out at Checking for Updates (before it was stuck like yours at Registering Device)

Connected using hotspot to my S10 through LTE, using Canadian IP from my cell provider (Rogers): Software update check works flawlessly.

So it's not a region thing like I thought earlier. Weird.

It is a weird issue. I only asked about the radio frequency you were downloading on because my S10 phone acts very strange sometimes on what it will or won't download on 5GHz vs 2.4GHz bands. My S9 never did that.
