Skinned Google Messages

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I have a quick question. How do you set messages to open a link in an app and not the browser? I have been trying to figure this out and can't figure our where in the settings to change this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance.

I'm not sure but try disable web links and choose show other preview or disable both and try see if any work Screenshot_20220328-185837_Messages.jpg

To be honest, I don't think it's rocket science on how Google Messages processes iPhone emojis and it has nothing to do with SMS/RCS. From what I can see, all it is doing is taking messages that come is as "Liked 'Text Message Here'" and translating that to a thumbs up icon near the message, because it can easily see what message the reaction is pointing too. If an iPhone user put an "!" on a message, Android users will get a text that says "Empasized 'Text Message Here'" but having the iPhone emoji feature on, it just translates that and puts an icon next to that message.

This is why for photos, it doesn't work - and this would total evidence that this is just simple translating. When an iPhone user gives a reaction to a pic, you will get a message from that person "Like an image" or "Laughed at an image." because Google Messages cannot determine which pic that the reaction was pointing to, it leaves it alone and you get the text message.

It's got everything to do with SMS, because that's how the text messages and the reaction messages (to certain text messages) are being sent/received between Apple and Android devices. It potentially has to do with something about RCS on the Android phones, because for some Android users the reactions are working and for others it is not, with no otherwise difference between OS version, Messages App version, Beta status, etc...

I agree the ability to process the reaction messages should not be rocket science. Neither should it be a mystery about how Google is distributing the capability (that is, packaged within or depending on a certain APP, an OS version, a Beta program, part of RCS, etc...). However, for some reason there is great mystery and confusion as to why/how it works for some but not others.

I just got my ultra two days ago.I have both messages app on phone.I have been using stock.but I want to try beta google messages how do I change default app?

Just open Google messages and it will prompt you to change it to the default messaging app.

If by stock you mean the app that was set for messages by default, that is Google Messages. To join the beta, go to Google Messages in the Play store and join the beta there. Shortly thereafter you should have an update available to download.

I meant it had nothing do to with the SMS/RCS connection that people were talking about. It obviously uses SMS but all it's doing is reading the SMS as it comes in. It has nothing to do with RCS in terms of why it's working or not. It was established that activation of the feature is done server side, so in that token you can say that it's not working because of RCS but it's really not working because your carrier or Google didn't activate it. Likewise, my Google Messages doesn't have the Google Photo Links option nor the Messages Organization feature - because ATT (or Google for that matter) has not activated it, but the same version of Google Messages on my other Android phones have different options available.

Anyway what I was trying to say is that all the iPhone emoji feature is doing is translating the iPhone emoji text that we are getting into an emoji to attach to the text. It won't work with pictures because the iPhone emoji text that comes in does not identify the image, so you'll still get "Mary liked an image." for media.

Ok. Understood. I wasn't trying to poke at you for if you did not understand that it was based on SMS. That wasn't my intention. Sorry about that if that is how it sounded.

The "requires server side activation" part is however still awkward and confusing, in my mind. That would mean Google is controlling what is "turned on" or "turned off" within our phones in terms of included functions and functionality, either in the core of the OS itself or in their Messages App. That is a bit disturbing to me, in terms of phone owners and APP downloaders having even less control over aspect of their phones.

I think the reason why some of us were speculating about if there was also a dependency on RCS, is because that was one plausible way to explain why only some people who want the functionality actually don't yet have it, assuming Google wasn't actually in control of phone or APP functions from their server side, but instead the phone owners were still in control via choices they make for OS, APP or beta downloads, updates or participation (or in the case of RCS, if a carrier has yet rolled it out). There doesn't seem to be, for example, an otherwise step anywhere for a user to have to "sign up" for this, in order to get it.

Finally!! Running the latest beta and was prompted about the organization feature when I went into Messages. Looked and finally got the iPhone reaction feature too.

I do not have the "Message organization", but the iPhone emoji setting showed up on my phone this morning also. This even though I have not had any updates to the app itself for a few days.

No "sign up" because it will eventually be rolled out to the stable version, too. It's becoming a core feature of Google Messages.

I've had the iPhone reactions, but none of the other newer features. I just looked and the organization feature showed up since I last messaged someone earlier today.

...I was going to disable the org feature, but then I saw that if I do the auto-delete of OTPs won't work. SMH

Same - I just checked and the iPhone reactions is finally there.

iPhone emoji setting appeared yesterday as well, but that was the extent of the features. Can someone try and see if the hi-res feature works like sending a video to an iPhone user?

So does anyone now know how the functionality is achieved, in terms of if it is done by something in the OS or something in the Google Messages App? What OS and what Google Messages App version are people on, that have it working?
