Sprint LG G3 Lollipop Update : Discussion, Bugs, Tips & Complaints

You may want to call Sprint. They may attempt doing a factory reset and phone re provisioning to reset everything. Sometimes that helps get a stuck update through or it is possible something funky is going on with your device which is rare but I've seen it in the past where a device just refused to take the OTA.

i took it to a sprint store and they told me that there was no update and the phone was running fine

JPD was kind enough to share on a different thread:
Boot up in system recovery mode by shutting phone off. Hold volume button down and then hold power button. It will bootup in recovery mode. Select clear cache. Then restart the phone.

I tried this twice and it doesn't work...Just starts up normal. I made sure to have both buttons pressed firmly.

Unbelievable... Jump on the phone with Sprint CS. Also have this page handy while your talking to them so you got your backup ;)

Find and update the software version on your LG G3

Doesn't surprise me in store reps gave you the blow off. They don't acknowledge anything until it slaps them in the face a few times. I walked into Sprint months back and say hey you guys going to have a Nexus 6 on display? The entire store staff looked at me, when did they announce a Nexus 6? LOL... This was already after orders shipping out and in the hands of customers...

Do you have ADB setup on your computer? If not you can grab it by downloading the Android SDK, then after installing just opt to download the Platform/Tools portion of SDK which will have ADB. Follow the instructions at the following link http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html and the direct download link is below for the SDK tools package only.

http://dl.google.com/android/installer_r24.0.2-windows.exe

Once that is setup you can open a command prompt on your computer and type in
Code:
adb reboot recovery

That will boot you right into your stock recovery and you can select Cache wipe from there.

I held the volume down and power and didn't let go until the funky screen (not sure what it's called) showed up. I had to do it twice because I let go of the buttons too soon.

The manual means of entering recovery is a little funky. But best to power off. Then hold down volume with one finger, continue to hold and then press and hold power button. If it works, you should see a screen pop up " Recovery Mode... loading " within about 5 seconds of the device powering up w/ the first LG screen.

Paul, would you recommend reformatting the SD Card after a big update like this or is that not necessary?

I just got my update this morning so I'm currently backing up all of my internal memory on my PC here at work. Going to factory reset after I update since I have a lot of 'clutter' in my device, lol! Going to do some spring cleaning as they say! :)

I haven't had any issues. Usually I'm all for a good factory reset after a major OS update but this time around I'm really impressed with letting things go. Only steps I took was a few reboots after the update and I also cleared cache on the device after the update. I've had no issues.

As for your direct question about the SDCARD. That is entirely your choice. If you feel like doing the leg work to move things off to your computer, then format and start over with a clean card then go for it !

@ GrooveRite... Check your PM too ;)

Aha! I didn't realize I was suppose to keep holding it after the screen came on.

My wife's G3 has the notification saying an update is available but when she tries to download it she gets an error stating she doesn't have enough space. Considering she has 24 GB free on the internal storage, I can't for the life of me figure out why she's getting this error. Thoughts?

Try a few things.. These are just off the top of my head...

  • Reboot
  • Open the battery cover and make sure the SIM card is properly seated (give it a little push)
  • Cross fingers :P

Very strange indeed... Let me know how things go.

Notifications have changed. I tried to read through everything in the thread to see if it had been discussed and didn't see much...

KitKat showed the icons in the status bar at the top when I would get a new text, gmail etc... on the lock screen. Now nothing. Any way to turn that back on? I really don't like the lock screen notifications unless someone knows how to go straight to that app by pressing the notification.

I've had the update for a few days now and battery life seems not quite as good as KK. Also don't care for the new Back, Home icons.

Also is there a way to turn the app drawer back to a grid pattern?

Thanks!

No. Now the notifications are displayed on the lockscreen similar fashion as your notification pull down shade. Not a huge fan either but thats Lollipop.

Seems about the same to me. Then again everyone's usage varies.

I don't mind them, just wish they were smaller. Only way to change that will be via rooting and custom ROMs or theme.

Not that I'm aware of.

My play store is not working. I keep getting the message "check your connection and try again". I've tried over LTE and wifi? This is just since lollipop. Any ideas?

I've tried rebooting. She has no problems with calls / data so I don't think it's the SIM but I'll give that a try anyway when I get home. Thanks.

running 2 days now, battery about the same, less laggy and faster internet, 13hrs battery at 38% half asleep, half being constantly used, I'm happy
Edit: Had double SMS notifications on the lock screen with Textra but it stopped when I forced stopped the stock app
no reset

Just updated to Lollipop....no factory reset either. I want to see if I get any of these issues that have been reported. So far, so good. No issues, no problems. Battery seems to be chipping away a little quicker but I'm interested in seeing if it adjusts after a few hours. If you guys/gals have anything for me to watch out for, please let me know.

I will be factory resetting sometime later down the road to start fresh like I always do! :)

Since the Lollipop update the other day, I can no longer receive MMS messages via wi-fi. If I disable the wi-fi and just use the cellular connection, the MMS comes through just fine. I looked through the options in Messenger but didn't find anything that would fix it. Any thoughts?
