Sprint Samsung Epic 4g Official Froyo EC05 [update.zip method/Custom Odin Packages]

My Epic is strictly stock eclair, unrooted, with many market apps installed. Please point me to what I need to do to root and install free wireless tether after I update to EC05.

Thanks!
I would follow this process so that you can get all your data.

THESE BOTH ASSUME YOU ARE STARTING FROM DI18 (ECLAIRE)

1. Update to EC05 (follow instructions in this thread)
2. Root the phone (follow instructions in this thread)
3. Install Wireless Tether app (from market)

Following #1 above while starting from Eclair should keep all your installed apps intact. I wasn't able to do this. I couldn't get it to work so I went back to DI18 and then the phone promptly prompted me to update to EC05. I then used Titanium Backup to restore all my apps and data.

So you could do the following instead.

1. Root the phone.
2. Buy and install Titanium Backup
3. Backup all apps and data
4. Update to EC05
5. Install Wireless Tether app

:( say it ain't so.

I wish it wasn't but Sprint made the documentation of this update seem like it was a replacement of EB13 botch up, not that everyone with EB13 and DI18 would get it. People just assumed if they had EB13, they would get EC05 by the end of today. I haven't seen anyone with EB13 get an update and another person has stated the OTA has been haulted (AGAIN). I'm seriously tired of Sprint after having so many headaches with the Pre and the Epic... If only the Hero was top of the line software wise...

You can skip #2, after doing #1 your prerooted and can install Wireless Tether.

(Sorry about the #2 and the #1, sounds sick don't it? LOL :p:p:p)

If you don't go looking for it, you don't even know its there. I don't see how the space it takes up is a problem when you can move apps to sd card for more space.

So many people (not saying you) were screaming that they didn't want Sprint ID and that it was going to ruin their phones or something. The non OCD people can leave it in their app drawer and forget it exists like any other piece of bloatware.

I didn't think about being able to move apps to sd card. LOL But you are right I use launcher pro and have no need to check Sprint ID after my curiosity worn off so if you don't think about it you don't notice it and most of what i do on my phone I have shortcuts or widgets for and don't go into my app drawer much.

But if that was the case than why not release EB13 to everyone instead of pulling it and putting out a "better" version? which basically means everyone with EB13 is screwed.

I remember seeing people download EB13 OTA. I however did the update.zip method using clockwork. Is there something in the install of EB13 via the update.zip file that would conflict with sprint trying to push EC05 to me? Is there sometime of difference with my phone that was updated using the update.zip clock work method to EB13 vs. someone who did the EB13 upgrade via OTA?

I glanced at it, and what i saw from it was 2 diff setups, one called My ID and one called samsung. Samsung of course is the stock . Switched to the my id and it seemed to be a blank loaduout running the default droid interface. I changed back and likely will be the last time I look at it.

Have you ever tried Go Launcher EX? Its alot like launcher pro but I like it better and it has some options that the pay launcher pro has but for free.

Update zip to ec05 again. Seems to be running ok. Will have to see if my lactation is working right off cell net and what not.

Disappointed the browser still doesn't have full screen landscape typing.

The Sprint forums (post found HERE) say:

"- Devices with software versions DI18 and EB13 will receive the udpate"

It's under important notes.

And while I do agree with everyone seeing the trend that so far only Epic users on DI18 Eclair have gotten the update, the original official information does say that users on EB13 should get it.

I just talked with a wonderfully intelligent (hahahaha!) Sprint rep and was told there has been a network outage all week which is why EC05 is going out so slowly. He told me I will get the update (I'm on EB13), and that the update has not been pulled. :-)

A few more days won't kill me...I would just like to have the most recent software! LOL

Sprint id ain't bad if you use yahoo. Kinda turns it into a yahoo phone instead of google lol.

Didn't Verizon try something like that with the HTC Merge, making it a Bing phone? Then it gets pulled and is now showing up on Altell with google. Not sure if thats what happened. Sprint ID might be differant because the google is still there.

Got my OTA update to EC05 from DI18 stock, after lurking and hemming and hawing on whether to do downloaded update. Glad I waited...Now if there are issues I can't blame my noviceness!

A bit surprised how much can change with just 0.1 added to version number! Now interested to see if my girlfriend's Transform will update soon...to add Swype.

Official EC05 is finally here!

Manual "update.zip" Method:

This manual "update.zip" method is currently only for those running stock Eclair 2.1 (DI18). This will NOT erase your current data if your already running Eclair 2.1 (DI18).

* Download the update file from here.
http://android.clients.google.com/p...0/5f372cb40834.update-SPH-D700_DI18ToEC05.zip

* You will need to rename the file to "update.zip" once the download is finished. If your changing the filename in Windows Explorer just rename it to "update" and NOT "update.zip" or your filename will end up "update.zip.zip" and then it won't install.

* Transfer the file to your root directory of your sdcard

* Boot into stock recovery mode (press and hold volume down+camera+power for a few seconds)

* Select "apply sdcard:update.zip" (You navigate by using volume up/down & select by hitting home key)

* Sit back and wait for the update to finish and your phone will reboot into EC05 Froyo!

Piece of cake! Took less than 10 minutes. So far, so good! :D

No I have not but thanks I'll go check it out.

I tried the update.zip with EB13 installed, got an error message when I did. The I used Odin to go back to stock Eclair, then re-did the update.zip and it worked like a charm.

Just follow the info at the start of this thread and you'll be fine.

Does anyone know if I got the update the 1st go round and had many issue like my text not sending if I dont do a battery pull 1st, will I get the new update? Sammie wasnt able to answer and neither was Sprint. But this is very annoying when I text very very often. Please help!
