Well isn't this surprising. I'm in Belleville, Illinois. And all of a sudden there's amazing 4G here. Last time I was around this area (about a month ago) there wasn't any...so... wow.

Wow that's awesome. And no, Sprint's not expanding WiMax. They are moving to 4G LTE - they have to, if they want to have any chance of staying competitive, really.

Yes I'm aware. But if they're expanding (well, setting up...) LTE everywhere else (except here lolz) why are we suddenly getting Wimax? I'm not complaining though:p

It sounds like you may have found a "protection site". These were mandatory minimum required sites to retain spectrum leases. If Sprint and Clearwire did not use their 2.5/2.6GHz spectrum they stood to lose it, hence Sprint partnered with Clearwire to build the only "4G" technology available at that time(2008) to keep the spectrum.

Clearwire coverage maps show all sites, Sprint does not. CLEAR | 4G Wimax Internet Coverage Map with Service Area.

From what I understand Sprint is phasing out Wimax starting next year. As far as devices running wimax you should be good up through the next year. After that, I would consider upgrading.
