unrEVOked!

Word from urevoked twitter account: (Unrevoked (unrevoked) on Twitter)

We hope to release a patched OTA tonight for #evo4g that allows you to preserve your root and still get all the benefits of the OTA.

Looks like @HTC might have closed our root hole. You'd think think they'd have released the EVO GPL source first.

@unrevoked Using unrevoked1 to root your EVO? Don't apply the OTA yet.

@unrevoked Oh, and for those of you who updated: we'll see if we can RUU you back down. Stay tuned.

Thanks for the Twitter updates.
I'm confused though. Do I have to RUU back down or are they going to release a simple root for the new update? Or both?

I just need simple root to restore my apps and settings cause I backed up using Titanium Backup and it requires root.

I apologize up front if this is a dumb question

could somebody tell me if screwed up my phone, I had unrevoked installed on my phone, turned it on, but never actually used it to run a program that required root. I installed the sprint update yesterday when prompted and did not notice any problems. however this morning I cant seem to change the prl like I usually do at work to save on battery life, and I also lost android wallpapers (which does not bother me so much) so does any bodythink that the update messed up my phone and that I need to wipe it and start over again? any guidance would be appreciated.

Update actually Removes Android Wallpaper...

And as for unrEVOked Root with OTA its a no go unless your Full Root with Nand...

Try Searching on XDA they have a few solutions

I personally just Flashed the rooted version of the update rom on top of my current rom which seemed to work just fine...

Hey I just saw the tweet from unrevoked.
I was wondering if this is the simple root with SU privelages. That's all I want, not full root.

Is their patch just that?

I did full root before, and unrooted (using the RUU) to do the update. I just need the root privelages to get my apps back up from Titanium Backup.

I installed the new update yesterday. Now I want to use unrevoked2. I guess unrevoked2 won't work until they fix it right? (I was using the old unrevoked before, never rooted any further.... I tried running it but it looks like it gets stuck waiting for superuser permission (not rooted, no access right?)

Is this to fully rooting the evo + OTA ? I used unrevoked before for root access.

I don't know about OTA, but I think it allows you to keep root access via unrevoked plus have the update.

I have not updated my phone yet, and I would like to keep root access to run 'root' apps like Shoot Me, and Wireless Tether, but I am not wanting to run custom ROMs.

More info would be awesome :D

Can someone confirm that if you have unrevoked originally, and then ran the unrevoked 2 to gain recovery, then apply this new update, do you still have root?

Just Flash the Root OTA Rom over your Stock Root Rom * if you have NAND * and it works Perfect... Im Running the OTA right now no issues Full Root...

A patched OTA was just released. They're still working on fixing people who already ran the OTA. Heres the tweet:

Patched #evo4g OTA ready: public:evo_ota_2_patch [RootWiki] . For those of you who updated already, stay tuned.

For everyone asking and going to ask. This patch is for the folks that fully rooted with unrEVOked 2(recovery). This patch does not update unrEVOked 1(root) one click root. They stated the one click root may come later. So as of right now, there is only a fully rooted option, weather it be toasts version or some other version out there. But for now, you can no longer use unrEVOked 1(root) to one click root your EVO. I do believe you can manually root through various options and then use unrEVOked 2(recovery) to Flash.

The thing is I am not in root yet (only using unrevoked)

I am wanting to get into root access before the update gets pushed again so I don't lose my chances of being able to root

so basically what I am wondering... would this be the way to root my phone, plus keep the 'stock' ROM.....

Then once it is up and running, apply the OTA update ROM and my phone will be up to date plus have root?

I'm sorry for the noob questions.. I am still new to android, and there are so many different options out there it is kind of overwhelming :o

Let me try to understand what you are saying:

If the original unrevoked root method was used, and not the FULL root (like toasts) then this new unrevoked update will not let you keep the root, even though you have install unrevoked 2?

If you used unrEVOked 1 to root and unrEVOked 2 to flash before and did not update yesterday...then use this patch to flash.

If you did not update yesterday and only used unrEVOked 1 to root, you need to use unrEVOked 2 to flash and keep root...then use this patch.

If you did not update yesterday and don't want to fully root...WAIT for a possible future version of unrEVOked 1 to "soft" root the newest OTA update.

If you did not updated yesterday and want to keep root...you have a world of options. You can root the old fashion way and use unrEVOked 2 to flash the said patch, or root and recovery the old fashion way, there is already a rooted updated OTA rom.

I myself only used unrEVOked 1 to "soft" root and I updated smoothly yesterday. I don't want to fully root. I did a Titanium Backup before updating, so either Froyo will come out and will back up most of the stuff I want to back up anyways or a unrEVOked 1 update will come out and give me the option to back up through Titanium if I need it. Not a completely safe way as far as insuring the ability to back up any time I needed, but this is what I chose.

Dont do the OTA yet if you didnt do it that is...

Use unrEVOked1 to Root...
Then use unrEVOked2 for Full Root

After thats done you can Flash the new OTA PATCHED ROM

I Personally Backed up with NAND
Flashed over my Stock Rom w/ Root to avoid having to reconfigure my phone... Every thing works perfect and i kept all my apps and settings...

Just dont forget to Back Up again after you flash...

I Flash *Dual Boot* into Froyo and back thru out the day so NAND is God Send...

I have *not* updated my phone yet... The current version my phone is running on is 1.32.651.6 CL171253

I will look more into backing up with NAND... So far I have the free version to Titanium Backup and have not done anything with that yet.

The dual boot sounds cool, but for now I think I'm going to stick with wanting full root access, and stock ROM

Thank you again for your info!!! :D

Cleared up a lot of questions I have having

We've seen sporadic reports of this. Please get in contact with us if this is the case for you.

We believe this to be an issue with the recovery setup that we are using. We anticipate having a patch available tonight.

*Now that I've run the update, unrevoked doesn't work any more.
With this update, unrevoked is no longer necessary; the su binary is installed on your phone in /system/bin.
