Verizon XOOM gets ICS next week!

UPDATE...I called VZ and asked if they had any info about the ICS update. The customer service girl didn't even know what it was, but when I checked w/ Tech support, they told me that the official update started rolling out on May 10th, and would be available to anyone who forces an update on their device 10 days afer, so we should be able to get ICS on May 20th. Fingers crossed!:D

I highly doubt they gave you correct information. I hope its true, but I really doubt it.

It's so sad to hear fellow XOOM owners just wait, and wait, and wait, and...

Free yourselves from the shackles of Verizon's release schedule.

Follow the simple directions given in the forum to root and load custom ROMs. You won't be sorry. You'll have capabilities in excess of what any official OTA will provide.

I highly recommend the Eos ROM with Cornerstone. Wouldn't you like to have multiple open windows? Don't you deserve to have multiple open windows?

I can tell you why I don't flash mine.

I use mine for work every day. I can't take the risk of running into problems as mentioned in steps 6 and 7. Time is also an issue. I DO NOT HAVE A SPARE 4-6 hours to do this. If I start it, I have to have it done by the next day so I would have to be prepared to spend 6 hours even if it only takes me 30 minutes. I would love to do it, but I feel that I can't take the risk.

I just wanted to shed some light as to why some might not be flashing.

To do this, you will need the following things:
1. USB Cable that connects your Xoom to your computer.
2. A Windows computer - I don't know how to do this on a MAC. Don't have any MAC.
3. a MicroSD card, preferably 2 just to make things easier.
4. A reader of some sort that connects directly into your computer for that MicroSD card. This means, not a phone or other device that you are running your MicroSD card through. Some sort of a piece of equipment that you put your MicroSD card into and that goes into your computer and it reads just like a thumb drive. It may work using a phone or something as a proxy, but I didn't do it that way, so I have no idea if it will do that.
5. A bunch of files
6. TIME!!!! - This may work first try off and it takes you 20 - 30 minutes and you're up and running. It may take you 4 hours to do it, or 6 like me because I hit a road block and had to do more research.
7. Patience - This may not work right off, please understand that. You may have to do things 2 times or repeat a step along the way.

I haven't done it because I'm a recovering flash-o-holic ....
If I start... I won't stop.... I'll lose tons of sleep and won't get anything done around the house... which is a lot with a new house...

Well.....i have waited this long....I may as hold out for the official update....from the official Verizon calendar they finished the ICS testing for XOOM on May 17th.....so the release is coming soon.

People have been claiming the release is just around the corner for some time now. Heck, the title of this thread is "Verizon XOOM gets ICS next week!"

At some point one of these claims is going to be right. :-p

In the mean time, those of us rooted and ROM'ed are enjoying the heck out of ICS, including features that won't be in the official OTA... whenever that's coming.

IMHO, people should still consider taking things into their own hands. It's not going to take six hours, not even close. It's been a long time, but I think it took 30 minutes. Maybe add another 30 minutes for a newbie to read through the directions a couple of times to familiarize themselves with the procedure before starting.

You're not going to brick your XOOM, unless you can't read/follow instructions and are a compulsive button pusher.

In fact, I've never heard of someone bricking their XOOM, although that's no claim it can't be done. ;-)

I just got an invite from Motorola to join their soak test for the Verizon Xoom...I can only assume it's for testing the ICS update? I rooted a few weeks ago, so I can't participate. Now I'm wondering if I should flash back to stock if/when the OTA rolls out?

Awsome news if true!

Bummed I didn't get an email from Motorola. Glad to hear that the invites are going out.

Yea, the soak test started so we're looking at somewhere between days and a week at this point unless something horrible is found. I'm wondering if there will be new radios that can be pulled for the custom roms. I'm not going back to an official release but I'm hoping it helps improve the roms. :)
