Was your Nexus 7 defective or in Perfect condition?

Hey guys,

I've had my N7 for only two days and sorry to say it has the screen lift issue on the left side of the device. I'm loving the device (coming from the new iPad) but this build issue from Asus is really worrying me. Mine is a C70.

Going to get it exchanged and try to get a decent piece.

My screen is a little loose kinda..... but no major problems so far...... Walmart 3 weeks

sending this out with the Nexus 7!!

This thread is so weird. It's almost like we are all discussing two completely different products.

I consider myself a power user of the Nexus 7. I use it in my business, at home, and on the road every day, often 18 hours a day. The N7 has been perfect -- nearly indestructible (and not in a case), perfect quality in every way, and not so much as a hiccup. It has literally excelled at every task I have assigned to it, including primary navigation in an airplane.

When I read about you guys returning 2, 3, or 21 units without finding a good one, I am mystified. How could we be talking about the same tablet?

I wonder if ASUS had one rogue factory release a bunch of bad ones?

I just got my fourth one.. unfortunately it's a c60 too. There's definitely some lift on the left, but it's going to have to do. I haven't had one in a week and I was having withdrawals lol.

Same for the Screen the left side is poping out of the bazel. Won't return it but bought the official cover to keep it in place...

16gb model from staples. Had it for a week now, no problems to report. There is a slight issue with the screen brightness flickering. I'm hoping that its just an issue with the auto brightness and nothing physically wrong with it.

For those of you with screen lift issues, try this. I know that Google should have taken care of it, but it takes 5 minutes and is easy as heck. Seems to solve the problem for 95% of people and doesn't void your warranty.

Nexus 7 screen separation issue and fix discovered

that doesnt fix the issue.
I dont know where you get your 95% figure from.
there is a very long thread there 80 pages plus ,where 95% of people report back saying that after trying the fix the lift returned.

none of the fixes witch require tightening the screws or loosening them or using washers will work unless you use glue to fix it as someone from xda sugested.

the issue is much more complex though.
is to do with how the frame ,back cover, glass and display work together.

because the motherboard runs along that side-where the lift is -the manufacturer has put more screws on the left side then on the right side.
the screws on the left side when tightened create a bend in the silver bezel which also creates the illusion that the glass is lifted.
This bend in the silver bezel is also accentuated by the back cover which tries to pull the bezel towards itself. This is the reason why when the back cover is off the lift seems less pronounced

In order to fix this issue you would have to re-engineer how the frame, back cover, screen are put together which is nearly impossible to do unless you have a laboratory of your own.

Gave up waiting for B&H and ordered today from Staples. it's supposed to come tomorrow to my local store which will make it easy to refuse or return. Staples also seems to have the best ratings for a walk-in store. Having read posts on this tread, what should I look for when I pick it up? Is the box supposed to be sealed? How? i know to look for the C60 or C70, but if it's a C60 how best to know if it's a restock? I think I can figure out the screen lift thing if it's prominent. I am not particularly techy so please keep answers simple. It's hard to understand about the cable being cut or where there is a reseal. Maybe it would help to add pictures to show this kind of thing so us noobies will know what to look for. This is my first tablet, 2nd Android device. i have a T-Mobile My Touch 4G bought in 2010 which is finally running Gingerbread. I am looking forward to seeing Jelly Bean in action.

Just got mine on Saturday at Office Depot. It's in pretty good condition minus the very small and hard to notice light leak on the bottom left of the screen. I only noticed it cause I was searching the thing far and wide for problems after reading everyones complaints.

I also had a minor scratch on the right bezel that I don't want to think was there before I bought it but at the time of noticing it, I had only been on my bed with the thing and it never touched anything but my sheets.......

I'm keeping it though. This thing is awesome!

I got a perfect one on the first try, but but what's up with people who say that the glaring build problems can be justified due to its low cost? The consumers pay the 200$ with the rightful expectation of receiving a product as advertised and in a perfect and new condition. What would be justified is for Google/Asus to increase the price if that's what's needed to ensure quality, but putting out half baked products is unacceptable unless if this is what the consumers are knowingly paying for. Yea, there's bound to be some machines that slip through the cracks but I mean come on...look at the frequency of people getting defective products

This thread has certainly given me reason to wait on getting a N7.
Hopefully all the kinks will get worked out.
And a big thanks to the OP. Very well maintained and documented and helpful thread.

Absolutely wrong it certainly would not require re-engineering. I linked the wrong tutorial apparently, the Android Authority one only talks about tightening screws. Their method works, but generally only for a couple hours until they get loose. What happened to the faulty devices is that thread adhesive melted somewhat from overexposure to sun, or something. To fix it, just dab some TA ($1.99 from frys) on each screw on the left side, and screw them back in gently, but firmly. Thread adhesive is not really glue, it provides just enough adhesion to keep the screw tight and let's you easily unscrew it later. I saw dozens of posts from people who tried this with success and none from anyone it didn't work for. I had to do this saturday with an N7 I bought as a gift that had SERIOUS screen lift. Screen's perfect now 3 days later.
