Such as? I mean, they're finally making low end devices that aren't a nightmare to use and I think that was their biggest downside prior to this year.

Maybe. That still does not give me a reason to switch from Android. There is nothing iOS offers that is better as far as the actual phone itself.
You could argue that the apps are better, but how long will that last? Android has such overwhelming marketshare now that developers are forced to pay attention to it. App revenue on google is outpacing iOS significantly - Apple Loses Revenue Share To Google In Apps - Business Insider
Apple has painted itself into a corner. It has trained it's users to think in a certain way and that is going to make it very difficult for Apple to add features or change things without provoking their user base.
I guess we'll never know. It is like asking what would happen to the Earth if the Moon crashed into it tomorrow. Samsung is going to go where the money is.
Apple is starting to realize that they will have to let some things into their walled garden. As time goes on those things will increase. I wonder with Android will we ever see Google's version of the Apple store. I heard Google's customer service is extremely poor. You rarely talk to an actual person.

The Play Store is Google's version of the app store. Most apps may be more polished on iOS, but that's because of the the devs, not because of the store. Play isn't "unsafe" or riddled with malware like many people like to claim.
As far as customer service, that's only in comparison to Apple, which is known for its great customer service. Very few companies have GREAT customer service.

Nokia is pretty great without the premium and the Play Store had over 40,000 malware apps at the end of last year (Some numbers say 72,000 but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.)
Which is less than 0.05%. Hardly a cause for concern

I disagree. One bad app is cause for concern. It's important that Google (and everyone else) strive for constant improvement in this area. That said, I do believe that the malware threats to Android are overblown. Even people who do risky things probably won't get infected, and those who don't are pretty darn safe.
You keep repeating this as if it is fact. When 40% of all android smartphones sold in 2013 are Samsung smartphones, then Samsung IS Android. The companies in 2nd 3rd and 4th are two Chinese companies and LG. Nexus does not even have a sales number.
You are telling him to go get a Nexus when it is not sold in any large numbers, is not advertised and is not even sold on Verizon and not sold with a contract. Amazing!!!

Here is one thing. On my GS3 when I get a notification in the status bar and I touch it, the Android OS does NOT direct me to the app. I have to pull the drop down menu and got to the notification screen touch the notification and then I can go to the app.
With iOS I get a notification, I touch it on the status bar and I am redirected to the app.

All Samsung phones are Android, but not all Android phones are Samsung. Even if it were 70%, Samsung isn't Android.
The Nexus 4 sold several million, I don't see why the Nexus 5 wouldn't have either. The Nexus line is gaining popularity. Not being sold on a contract is a good thing...As far as Verizon, that's their fault. You can use it on basically any other carrier in the world.

Maybe I phrased it poorly. What I meant was that it's not nearly as much of an issue as people make it out to be. Most people won't have any issues, and like you said, even people who install apps and APKs from elsewhere are safe most of the time.
No, I am saying that the majority of people who purchase Android phones do not even know that Nexus exists. People do not even know that there is a pure android OS. To them all handsets are android handsets.
Read this paragraph in context of the first paragraph and it makes perfect sense.

Let's say your Nexus 5 is having issues. Where do you take it too to fix this issue. If I have an issue with my gs3 I can walk into a Verizon store and address it. With a Nexus device who would I take it too. Now with Google introducing Android silver soon, who do all these customers take there device to if they have a issue. That is why I brought up having an actual walk in "Google store" . As Android grows wouldn't there be a need for something like this. How many people even know the Nexus 5 even exist. I guarantee you if you walk out into the street no one will now what it is. A Google store would also help to educate the average consumer on Android. People will stop referring all Android phones as O hey is that the galaxy phone.
