Update Info

Hey I heard we are jumping directly to Chocolate-Covered-Gummi-Bear-Topped Melon-Sorbet-Waffle-Cone aka 6.8.

Well the good new is that Punk.kaos (of droid eris fame) has jumped on board the fascinate and thanks to the help of several other devs (JT, Birdman) has released an alpha build of Froyo for the fascinate.

The Epic just got an unofficial Froyo release, and it seems PK isn't gonna be far behind with his.

I saw this too last night. . . I'm stoked

did you guys see what samsung is doing to the vibrant? Samsung stifling Android 2.2 update for T-Mobile?s Vibrant, tips anonymous insider | BGR | Boy Genius Report

I hope they don't do anything like this to us...

Same tip was poster here on Android Central. It's an interesting take that Samsung would be the one behind holding back Froyo. I tend to think this may be true but I also think it's very easy to point the finger at Samsung since they have to provide the OS for our phone. I wish it was Google providing us the update instead of our carrier and manufacturer but that's not the case.

Chat with Samsung about OS Update

Here is what i got chatting with Samsung:

Raymond: Our software department are under the process of releasing a new upgrade for this device.

Raymond: I'm sorry for the delay.

Raymond: When an update is made available, this support page will contain information on how to obtain the update and however you will get a notification on to your device as it is an over the air update.

Visitor: when you say upgrade..what do you mean..i just had an update today but it wasnt an "OS" update...will it be an "os" update

Raymond: I'm sorry for the miscommunication, I'm referring to the OS update for your phone.

I think you guys are wasting your time contacting Samsung just so you can post the transcript here. At least 50 other people have already done this and gotten essentially the same canned broken English response.

Agreed. I found it was easier just to create my own transcript and post it. Whichever thread that was in. Saved me a lot of time waiting for them to respond.

lol. thats so funny!!!!

hey, they just released the Froyo source code on their open source site for the Telus Fascinate (hspa/gsm or whatever) so they probably have one or will for Verizon soon

I'm sure they already have it. But Samsung has a new 4G phone hitting verizon with 2.2. If they hold Froyo for the fascinate and launch a new phone with Froyo then people will go buy another new phone and Samsung will just keep releasing phones, and I'm sure people will keep buying them.

We need rules or regulations on how long a manufacturer has to keep products up to date. We are still running 2.1 and the nexus s is already on 2.3. And samsung just passed another phone running 2.4 !?!?!?

The Telus Fascinate is a GSM device. Completely different hardware. So them getting 2.2 means nothing for us.

so pretty much what you're saying is that because there are hardware differences, software developers completely disregard modifying the software code. i mean, that totally makes sense. rim doesn't develop any blackberry os's for cdma, only gsm according to that logic. neither does any other phone manufacturer like motorola, lg, htc or apple. :p
