Where's Froyo for the Fascinate?

it may be time to start facing facts here...

samsung has released the galaxy S with the ticker, and now the Nexus S.. both of which are somewhat a clear upgrades from the nexus S line...

from their perspective, why would the company upgrade our phones to 2.2, when people just seem to buy new phones, and upgrade by purchase, rather than at the expense of Samsung & Verizon.

my guess, low priority on their radar, or its already released to verizon who also holds it low on their priority list, as in order to keep 2.2 up to par with their destruction of the android 2.1 experience with Bing, would take alot of engineers to properly destroy the 2.2 experience, and possibly subsequent 2.3 experience.

it takes lots of engineers without coffee to systematically sew a change an open phone environment into a system that is closed and unforgiving.

The Continuum (the Galaxy S with the ticker) isn't really a "clear upgrade" .. it's pretty much the same exact phone as the Fascinate, except it has the ticker. And it's already been discussed that the Nexus S is pure Google (no TouchWiz or any form of Samsung OS..) and will be updated primarily by Google.

Plus, Samsung/Sprint recently tried to update the Intercept. It had a few problems so the update was pulled... but the Samsung Intercept came out in June I think.. a little before the Epic 4G, which hasn't been updated yet (although I read that's coming soon).. even though it didn't quite work out, it shows they aren't just focusing on new devices. Both of those phones came out BEFORE the Fascinate, but both look like they're being updated first.

But if it's this "hard" (for lack of a better word) to get 2.2 for the Fascinate, then this phone will never get 2.3. Most of us would have moved on by then, but some people keep their phone for the full 2 years.

I dunno about that. A possible reason that 2.2 hasn't come out yet is because maybe Samsung is just going to skip it altogether and develop 2.3, I'm keeping watch on this as well since my girlfriend has the Fascinate.

I suggest someone call Samsung and tell them you have thousands of people ready to go to various Verizon stores throughout the US to dissuade people from purchasing Samsung devices unless they guarantee FroYo for us by the end of the year ;)

Keep telling yourself that...

I don't see Samsung skipping 2.2 because a froyo release has been given to the carriers. It's just not passing their qa. My guess is the Nexus S was designed specifically for 2.3 so it doesn't have the same issues the Galaxy S line does. I'd bet Google did all the development for the phone and fixed the file system crap Samsung did on the galaxy line. Samsung took a long time to get these phones out considering we saw them first almost a year ago. They probably have a crappy development team.

Next time... buy HTC. I know I will.

Funny you mention HTC. I was just looking at an HTC HD7. WP7 devices will all get updates at the same time, similar to the iPhone. Maybe Apple and Microsoft are doing it the right way by controlling when their OS goes on the devices and not leaving it up to the carriers. Anyone here have a WP7 device?

I'm all for an open OS, but once it hits the carriers Android is far from open anymore. Kind of defeats the purpose.

I don't visit these Forums on an every day basis....but I have to say, I CANNOT BELIEVE WE ARE ALL STILL TALKING ABOUT FROYO COMING TO THE FASCINATE? Wow, has Samsung and vzw dropped the ball on this one...Samsung can keep this phone And what ever they release after the new year...The EVO and Droid X had Froyo delivered basically 6 weeks after launch, this is Just plain out insane how long its taking. Back to HTC or Moto depending on what they show at CES, those 2 companies are the only ones to be trusted with updates, no more Samsung love for me in 2011.

If by 'kind of' you mean 'completely' defeats the purpose. Attaching the open source moniker to Android would be relevant if there were ANY devices out there that could run on NOTHING but open sourced code. Considering that so much of every handset's functionality is tied up in closed source code (even the google "Developer" handsets), there is NO point in thinking of Android as open source. Sorry for the confusion! Meet the new phone OS, same as the old phone OS.

You can thank the hardware makers moreso than the carriers; even if Verizon insisted on preloading bloat but Samsung had true open source drivers for every component of the phone it would be a trivial task to build a clean Gingerbread load and just sidestep everything verizon does. Of course, verizon has a vested interest in this not being easy to do but samsung has more at stake since inside those drivers is billions of dollars of IP...

he meant that it will never happen... altho the thought is nice!

It seems a little short sighted to just assume that 2.2 is indeed coming. They may very well skip 2.2 (especially given the evidence that a 2.1 fix is currently floating through the system) and go to working on 2.3. Does this mean 2.3 will be out any time soon? Heck no. But to insist that they must release 2.2 before they release 2.3 is kind of silly.

To insist it is silly I agree, but I also think it?s a little pre-mature to be making assumptions about anything at this point. There really is no solid evidence that they?re skipping 2.2, its all speculation. I?m not saying you?re making an assumption because I don?t think you are, but people need to step back and not bank their hopes on either/or at this point.

If i learned anything from owning a blackberry storm for about 2 years, it's "don't get your hopes up"... Whenever you have two companies the size of samsung and verizon trying to do something in unison, it's going to be a while.

Oh yeah, that?s the biggest lesson I took away from BlackBerry. What I find amusing is people who complain about updates to Android, some of them have never had a BlackBerry. If they think this is bad, they had no idea what it was like to be a Storm 1 owner. UGH!!

It's not just the Fascinate stuck on 2.1. Check out the article on the AndroidCentral home page about Motorola's update roadmap. No mention of Gingerbread anywhere. In some cases it's the hardware not being able to support it, but even the Droid X makes no mention of 2.3. That tells me that some project manager for Motorola doesn't even have it on their chart.

I've said from the start that Android is still known as a "hackers" or "geeks" phone, and will eventually keep the OS from being taken seriously by business users as well as consumers. And to think that your everyday user has no idea of Froyo or Gingerbread is not giving them credit. They see their friends or co-workers viewing websites that show Flash on the Droid, and wonder why their brand new Samsung can't do the same.

Android will start losing developers too. If I can only reach a small percentage of users running the latest OS, it's not worth it for me to create apps. I don't want to be stuck not using the latest features of the SDK because I have to worry about someone running 1.6 still.

I have to agree. See, im stuck without a laptop right now so that means no flashing anything. I have laptops at work but I cannot use them to do anything like that. I would like to root and flash but after I think about it and think that maybe I ought to use my friends computer, I realize that is something happens that I dont see right away im kinda screwed till I can use it again. It really sucks to be honest. I had a rooted droid 1 and LOVED IT!!!!

Been there, owned that. Still have it too... dunno if it still works since I've thrown it at the wall so many times, tough SOB.

That's why I value ROMs, reminds me of Hybrid OS' on the Blackberry's. If the stock system doesn't work, modify it to your liking and hope it works better.

something is definitely up though, DJ05 has been leaked for how long now and it still hasn't been released?

anyway, 2.2 is already coming out for the other galaxy S devices in the US (Dec 26 for epic 4g, vibrant already has 2.2 leaks), what would make the fascinate so special (or cursed) that it gets to skip to 2.3? I obviously don't know anything concrete, but it wouldn't seem to make sense that we would not get 2.2 when the other galaxy s devices are getting 2.2.
