"Whole" Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

That tends to be a regular opinion each Note/S generation, and is likely the fact that the S series are more curved than the Note series, so the flat visible portion on the Notes seems greater.

This tends to make the Notes a bit wider, and to some, more difficult to hold.

I see, I didn't know know the S series was more curved, they are both 6.4 inch but according to gsmarena the S10+ has 1 square centimeter less area

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I actually don't mind the hole punch, I love my note 9 and how it looks and I always thought the note 7 was the best looking phone Samsung ever made when compared to the competition in its generation. Now I actually think the s10 and s10 plus may be the best looking phones not only Samsung ever made but best looking phones period. When you see those videos with the iPhone XS Max beside the S10 plus, it makes the iPhone XS Max look significantly aged and the notch looks even bigger and pronounced. The s10 line is beautiful, hole punch and all IMO.

Now the real concern should be for those of you who swear by screen protectors. From what I've seen tempered glass is a no go on the s10! The fingerprint sensor won't work.

I haven't seen it in person yet, so I don't know much about it's appearance. There isn't much reason for me to, since the new "improvements" have made the Note 9 a far better product.

Re: Something I’ve not found anything about regarding the fugly hole punch…

Completely inaccurate analogy, sorry.

I owned both the V10 & V20.

I paid for a 5.7" screen that I got 1 billion percent complete use of AND a 1.7"ish screen that I also got complete use of.

In the case of a notch, a teardrop, or hole, you are paying for screen real estate, and you ARE paying for it, hence the diff in price between S10 & S10+, (a part of it anyway), and you are NOT getting full use of the screen.

Apples and bananas.

So it seems that what you're saying is, if they would only claim the screen size up to the camera itself, then declare the OTHER part of the screen beside the camera to be different, then things would be perfectly OK.

Regardless, I'm just telling you what the screaming was about back in the V10 days, when I owned one for two years. Back then, V10 owners wanted to do EXACTLY what Sammy lets you do today with the S10.

I owned two V10s, actually; when the first one burned out, I simply bought another off Swappa while waiting for LG to fix my first one.

Me, I don't care what size they choose to call the screen for marketing purposes. I understand the need for a camera; if they give me the tools to make that screen whatever I want, be it full screen or a "second screen" a la V10, that's what most interests me. I would love for Sammy to let me do today what LG gave me years ago.

But if they don't give me the tools, I will just deal with it and move on with my life. I won't go all OCD about the hole being there, or what size they called the screen in their marketing materials.

Re: Something I’ve not found anything about regarding the fugly hole punch…

So let me explain it to you...

Hmmmm... I seem to have acquired my Note 9, also with a camera, also with a 6.4" screen, and also with... oh wait... withOUT a hole... and I have full 100% use of the screen.

I can run a game in FULL screen, and not have a dead space in the corner where a game control might be.

I said nothing about bait and switch. But no one, except the Samsung equivalent of rabid Apple fanboys, can deny that you ARE losing usable/viewable screen.

and the ONLY reason you say that is because you're applying YOUR definition of "usable" to what Sammy says is the screen size.

Because as has been pointed out NUMEROUS times, you can define the screen in settings to display up to the camera, or up to the edge. It's the user's choice--even on a per-app basis, if so desired.

What YOU say is "usable" is immaterial. If Samsung doesn't provide enough of what YOU think is usable, or if you are offended by them saying the screen is X inches when YOU think it's only X-Y inches, then you simply don't buy it.

Others are perfectly happy with the screen being what it is.

Why are you here again? To tell people not to buy it? To tell people what they think "usable" should mean, and that they're wrong for thinking anything else? To express your OCD about screen size numbers on a marketing slick?

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Mod Note: let's keep discussion civil and on topic please. Thank you.

Yes I love pie on the note 9!

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Good point. People that are not media centric (I am) could care less about a notch or hole. Also, I'd suggest on the other end, OCD folks could be driven mad by a non symmetric hole on the display. Really.

Honestly, I would have no issues with the wonky punch, if they kept the iris scanner and notification led.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

The point seems if you do not mind the hole, good for you and enjoy. I think it's misleading though, quoting the display size counting it. They should also list the non hole viewable area. I actually thought nothing could top the curved edges display for media dysfunction, but this does so, far more.

Both suck none the less and combined, makes it more Abbeynormal. Tribute to Young Frankenstein :)

Added: And the 10+ has the curved corners, so a trifecta of anti media features. At least the N9 has mini curved corners...

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I honestly thought the mockups months ago were a parody of the other phones having a notch. Turns out it's real and makes notches seem great in comparison. IMO Samsung made an even worse design than the notch. Considering the price and the oddly placed display hole, do you think Samsung should be shocked if sales are lacking?

Typed this with my Note 9.

Nah. Those notches are the ugliest things I've ever seen. I can deal with the cut outs. At least Samsung is innovating.

I actually hate curved displays more than notches or holes. Not curved glass but the display itself.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Tmobile has it somewhat functioning. Not great, but it's a start.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh. Having it on like one phone doesn't really count as functioning to me lol.

They do list the display size on Samsung's website with things like curved corners taken into account

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I still think it's hilarious how an article called this feature out as a solution. To my point, the hole makes the display significantly smaller than the Note 9.

And there lies the solution. Buy a Note 9 or keep your Note 9. Samsung doesn't owe anyone the same form factor from series to series.

Maybe hole punch haters with be happy with the Note. Problem solved.
