Not making fun of people. I just never saw the appeal. Especially after some of the sad outcomes that have resulted from it.

And since they remove the only useful features, for me, then the hole punch is simply a useless eye sore.

I guess I could just blank out the screen around it.

I wasn't referring to you by the way regarding the selfie mocking. But let's not forget that front facing cameras are used for more than just selfies.

That's a valid point. I understand that many feel the hole looks better than the notch. I even tend to agree with that (although I would also be okay with neither - and back to bezels), but the hole seems to come at the expense of LED and Iris scan. Is it worth it? If you don't use them anyway, I guess it's a good trade off. Otherwise, not so much...

I used the iris scan all the time so it's gonna take time to adjust

I don't know that either one is better than the other. It just seems like Samsung went for the hole punch just to say they didn't have a notch. I don't recall who's review or impression I was watching on YT, but they made a point that the space between the top bezel and the top of the hole punch is so miniscule that you could tell they didn't connect it just for anti-notch sake. Either one is a distraction from the screen and essentially in the way.

But others do. You can't just proclaim something as useless and without purpose when you know very well that's not the case.

I would be curious to know the dimensions of the screen if you choose the option to leave the camera area out as virtual bezels

Phone dimensions are confusing and I would much rather that they gave us the screen area or the actual dimensions e.g. I suspect that the S10 actually has no more useable screen than the S9 and will still be a narrow device. In this regard I think the 5.8 vs 6.1 increase is a little misleading.

As for the notch vs hole punch debate, I would have preferred a smaller notch over the hole punch but do prefer the hole over say the pixel 3 notch! I would have rather though have had the single hole on both.

The one downside of the hole I have noticed though is the notification area is a lot thicker now so you lose some space in that regard vs a notch which sits flush to the top of the screen.

If you want my opinion the screen sizes of all phones have been misleading since they changed the aspect ratio from 16:9 in 2017 lol

Kind of similar to when TVs went from CRT to flat screen.

It's easy enough to calculate area, however rounded corners, curved displays, notches and holes make accuracy difficult. Overall the difference may not be that great.

If the hole area is being semantically called the notification area, it should not be counted for anything else. Games, media and video are impeded by the hole. Even more egregious is the Pixel and iPhone X using the diagonal space in the corners as part of the display size. To folks point here, the hole is tame in comparison. Still sucks, but less.

I don't pay much attention to what they are measuring and I'm not even sure they are all using the same criteria. All I know is that for some devices you get more screen space by moving the notifications into what used to be all the all bezel area and now notch or hole. At least that's what happened from Pixel 2XL to 3XL. Of course some are not happy with less notification icons. The bottom line is that we all have to make choices from what's available until the next best thing. No one is going to make us a custom device.

I agree the area is not great and probably insignificant to most, I notice it most when I watch videos in landscape with 16:9 aspect ratio without cropping to fit screen then it becomes more like a 5.7 or so inch screen

I know that and I am not. If I am going to have to downgrade functionality in order to keep up to date, then I think that it would be a nice option to make it go away somehow. Someone said that there is a setting to blank the screen around it and not have the hole stand out. If so, I have every intention of using it from the moment that I upgrade my Note 9

For someone who has lived with the iPhone X and XS Max for over a year, the Hole Punch is a breath of fresh air honestly. I thought at first it was a bad idea, but now, I think its the best idea yet. The notch takes up so much space at the top and in videos that its annoying.
