Why does my Samsung Galaxy S6 have camera focus struggle and a buzzing/hissing noise?

Re: Samsung Galaxy S6 Camera Focus Struggle and Buzzing/Hissing noise

Fortunate for you, I've done that a ton of times and it hasn't helped

Yea, I'm not really expecting it to last as it seems to be a hardware issue but it's working so far.

I have been experiencing this same problem too. I have found out that the rattling noise is the cause of the buzzing sound when opening up the camera app and other camera related apps. If you shake the device and open the camera app you will hear the buzzing sound (do this consistently by shaking the phone and opening the camera app, you will see). If you close the camera app and don't shake the phone, and re-open again, the buzzing sound won't be there.

I think I will be returning this directly to Samsung for a repair. For a flagship phone, and one that's been completely revamped, this is quite a big flaw.

It does matter if I shake it or not, sometimes the buzzing happens, sometimes the screen gets all wavy...sometimes its both. I should return it but hesitating as I don't want to factory reset it and lose everything.

Caught the horrible sound on video...no waves but focus is having trouble, you can see it finally focuses at the end.

That sounds like a problem that has the potential to get worse. While the prospect of needing service (and/or having to endure a reset) is understandably frustrating, don't you want to ensure you're getting the intended operation that you've paid for?

P.S.: Your cat looks awesome.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S6 Camera Focus Struggle and Buzzing/Hissing noise

I had the same problem. When I first got my S6 I noticed there was something that sounded almost loose in the camera if the phone was put up to my ear and shook. I didn't really think anything of it. It wasn't even a few days after I got my phone I took a Snapchat video and noticed and weird waving effect and heard a weird buzzing noise on the video. Didn't really think much of it and didn't see or hear it again until a month of so later. Then it came back, but much worse. Doing it almost every time I would open the camera or Snapchat. Figured I'd take it into Verizon and see if they could send me a new one since my phone was still under factory warranty. They did, and the first thing I noticed with the refurbished one I received is that the camera had a loose sounding component in it like the previous phone. Hopefully it doesn't turn out like last. What the hell is this? Something to do with the image stabilizion?

I completely agree you're correct, I know that even just based on principles I should get it done. I will likely get it done soon as I can't stand it anymore, I can count more than a hand full of times where I tried to get a picture and the problem happened...even as soon as I launch the camera now my wife laughed and shakes her head in disappointment...and gives her another excuse to praise apple lol

Well . . . that didn't last long. The buzzing came back, called Samsung tech support, told them I want to submit for warranty repair and was told to reset the default settings.

Called back, went through it again, same thing.

Used the online warranty request and sent it off this morning.

I have (had) the same problem too. It started after I updated to 5.1.1 but not sure the two things are related. The problem becomes worst with high temperature. I tried to set HDR off and I did not experience the malfuctioning anymore (it is now about one week). If this fix is confirmed I think that it is likely to be a SW issue rather than an HW one.

Doing the Advanced Swap with my carrier, they are sending me a Refurbished device and once i get it I have to send in my defective one. Cross my fingers it doesnt have the same issue and is as flawless condition as mine (my biggest fear).

Re: Samsung Galaxy S6 Camera Focus Struggle and Buzzing/Hissing noise

I sent mine in a week ago via their 2nd day air return. They replaced both camera modules and returned it with a total turnaround time of 6 days. The repair appears perfect with no sign of disassembly. No factory reset was done even though they said it would. Better yet, absolutely zero loss of photos, apps, or settings. It came back exactly as I sent it. Wow was I surprised! Overall I would recommend sending your phone back for repair.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S6 Camera Focus Struggle and Buzzing/Hissing noise

Got my replacement device and it's flawless (so far). Issue is obviously not here, however when I shake it near lens I still hear a rattle so I'm guessing it wasn't a loose part just a hw defect.

Hey guys, came across this on Google and wanted to add my own issues. When I open the camera I get the hissing/buzzing sound, as well as some distortion in the picture (in the form waves). It happens now and then on the main camera app, but every single time I open snapchat it happens. From the videos posted above, it almost sounds like a motor buzzing. Definitely annoying. It sounds like an angry robot.

Mine does it sometimes for ten seconds or so. It's going off for repair when I get back to the UK. What's the point in having a fast-on camera which you can't use for 5-10 seconds?!

If you have this issue try to work it out, don't hesitate. You paid for a working phone, you should get one.

I did my replacement process through AT&T. They have some agreement setup with samsung to just do refurbished replacements, although mine looks brand spanking new. My front facing camera was even more centered than my original!

AT&T's process sends you the replacement with materials to send your old one back in. So you are never without your phone.

I've had 0 issues since i got my replacement! Very much a hardware issue.

Exactly... I was holding off for a while but I'm very happy I did the exchange. Well like the guy above, my carrier gave me a refurbished one...I was concerned it would be beat up but it was in as mint condition as my original.

The guys questioning, just swap it or get it replaced.

Mine is doing the same thing. Just to clarify some misunderstanding. When you shake the camera it will make a rattling noise. That is the image stabilizer and it is normal. When you open any camera app, that buzzing noise is a OIS hardware malfunction. I have notice that OIS is not working properly anymore. Playing some videos when I first got the phone it looks great but lattest videos looks like i had no ois. I read some people posted that when they turn on the OIS it actually made the video worst which mine is doing the same. Im thinking that is it is related to buzzing problem. Going to get my phone replace.

I had the same issue just recently and actually notice my camera wasn't taking those amazing stunning pics as before. Especially and lower light conditions. I started to compare older pictures before the noise on the camera started to occur and could notice a pretty big difference. I got a replacement and boom back to normal, no noise on thr camera when opening the camera app and great pics again. I recommend getting a replacement bc this means your phones camera is faulty. At least that was my experience.

I replied to another post in this thread, where someone mentioned it seemed to happen when it was hot. My first S6 that did this seemed to do so randomly. The current S6 I have has only done this on really hot days, and has done it a few times since. It's almost like the heat causes something to malfunction, then and later. Combine this with the fact that the noise / shaky focus is from something physically vibrating, I think this is a hardware issue. Even if you take out the heat factor, I think something physical is failing after continued use, that's why the problem doesn't exist for some time then all of sudden does. Just my opinions.

Plus my camera makes a "knocking" noise (like a loose button) when I shake the phone, which it didn't do previously. Anyone else experience this?

Yes. I am experiencing the exact same thing. Annoying.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S6 Camera Focus Struggle and Buzzing/Hissing noise

I had this problem with the OIS motor, and had the phone replaced. Unfortunately the replacement device also has the same issue
