WiFi and Data Question

I'm not sure if this is the best forum for my question, as I'm not sure if it's a general Android question or device-specific.

When I connect to WiFi networks that require web-based authentication I can go to websites and use data services, but the WiFi icon does not turn blue and email cannot be sent or received. For example, my work has a public WiFi that opens an authentication web page before actually allowing Internet communication - many hotels have such an environment as well.

When I turn off WiFi the 4G icon turns blue and things are normal.

Any solutions?

Did you authenticate via a browser? I've authenticated on several hotel Wi-Fi connections. Each time the Wi-Fi signal is greyed out until I authenticate and then it turns blue.

Sent from a Droid Maxx.

I recently had to sign in (with my Maxx) on a plane and once I signed into the inflight web page my wifi was working and I could do anything.

My local taco bell is the same - once I open chrome & accept their terms on the webpage that pops up, things work like any other wifi.

The icons for wifi or mobile data turn blue when google services can authenticate. So, if the wifi network will not allow the phone to authenticate to google, the icon will not turn blue.

Thanks for the replies. I understand about the gray and blue icons. So it could well be that the websites I've tested actually do restrict connection to Google Services. The gray icon handles data and web browsing OK but if not blue, then maybe all email, Google and otherwise, is restricted.

Okay. I am having this same problem. I went on a trip this past weekend and connected to the hotel wifi. I had no problems with that. Upon returning home however I had a problem connecting to my home wifi. I finally connected but now my wifi and signal bars are grey and I have no data. I am still on Jelly Bean 4.2.2. I have deleted and reconnected my wifi numerous times to no avail. I have restarted my phone to no avail. What can I do to correct this problem so that my bars are blue again? I sure hope someone has the answer.

Follow up: It is fixed now. Restarting my router did the trick. I did restart it earlier in the day when I was having difficulty even connecting to my wifi. But this evening my husband complained that he didn't have a internet connection on his PC so I restarted the router again and that fixed it for both of us. Blue signals once again!
