Will google really wait till October 2018 to replace the screen?

I have, I've compared it next to my XL1; which has slightly different colors than my iPad, which has slightly different colors than my 4k tv, which has slightly different colors than my 1080p tv, which has slightly different colors than my LG Watch Sport.

But, to directly answer your question, I have my phone set on "boosted" and the reds look red to me.
Obviously every screen you compare will be tuned differently. My comment was meant to address the specific issue of reds looking orangish. Glad to know switching to warmer tone fixes the issue.

Honestly, I have had an S6+, S7 (x3) S8+(x2) S8, OP5, OP5t, P2 (non-xl) oh and the original pixel xl too. All oled and none with any screen issues matching the P2XL or v30

You forgot the biggest issue. The colors are wrong. Not off a little bit, they are 100% wrong. SRGB my ***. I have calibrated screens at work, certified every 6 months, and when I hold the phone up to those screens and compare colors, they are wrong on the 2 XL. They don't even come close to matching, none of them. The screen is crap.

Yeah the colour calibration out of the box probably wasn't the best choice. They did address it with the saturated option in the November update, but that should have come standard with the 'natural' and 'boosted' setting in the options for those who want to tone it down.

I do agree that the natural and boosted settings aren't RGB and are some other, weird calibration that just doesn't look great.

I think it just comes down to LG's OLED screens simply aren't as good as Samsung's. Having recently had the Note 8, the Note 8 screen is definitely better.

And I disagree with people saying that the screen issues are non-issues. We're talking about a very expensive flagship phone here, we should be getting the best in every respect. If LG's OLED screens aren't markedly improved next year, I think Google should just go with a different screen. Samsung's AMOLED or an LCD5 panel - whatever, I don't care. I just think they can't repeat the same mistakes again they had this year.

And the blue shift is very strong on my phone. Even just the slightest bit off angle and it's there. Having an office job, the phone is on my desk and always has the blue shift when I look at it. Again, needs to be addressed in the next phone.

I'm on my second XL2. This one has just as bad blue shift on it as the first. I may just throw the towel in on this phone and hope for something better from Google next year. Definitely an issue. There seems to be a lot of posters here that are willing to accept the compromises of this screen. Still on the fence for me.

My isn't bad so why am I guilty of accepting compromises?

Whether you notice it or not the screen on the 2XL has issues. It may not bother you but the blue tint is there, the screen is flawed and for such an expensive phone it is not right.

I can see LG limping on with the same screen in the V30 until the G7 launches in the spring but I do wonder if Google can afford to wait until next Autumn?

Could we see a revised P2XL sooner?

Google can wait.

My motives for starting this thread were that despite the issues I actually wanted a 2XL. I usually run an iOS and android device and switch every now and then and wanted to have stock and all the updates etc as the constant waiting months with Samsung and LG has become annoying. So I took a chance and did pick up a 2XL 128 (panda/stormtrooper) yesterday from Carphone Warehouse.

First the good and no surprises here, super quick and smooth, nice in the hand, great camera (how google matches apples portrait mode with just 1 camera is just damn impressive) The screen though, damn you google this one is as bad as the others I have seen and the blueshift is worse than even the V30 I was planning to sell on.

I took a couple of quick videos comparing with my iPhone X and V30 which show it but buggered if I can figure out how to upload them to this post!

I think I am going to brave Carphonewarehouse's reluctant returns policy and take it back...

I can’t believe how many people bought into the nonsense that this screen is flawed.

My screen looks fine most of the time, but the black smearing is awful when scrolling. I have had many OLED phones come through this house between my wife and I, such as; Note 1, Note 2, two S4s, two S5s, S6, two S7s, V30 (for about a month), and a Galaxy Tab S and none of them have had the black smearing effect when scrolling images that have blacks in them, especially with the brightness turned down.

I have submitted a complaint via the Pixel help menu and also posted the issue over on the Pixel support forums too.

Lots of threads with a complaint on this issue, with a lot of folks saying that it is 'normal for OLEDS to smear with low light'...I can say that smearing has never been an issue for me on any OLED I have used, so I believe that the panel on this phone is sub-standard, even if it is 'good enough' much of the time.

I thought it was nonsense too until I purchased a Pixel 2 XL 2 days ago. I have a Note 8, and love it, but wanted the battery life and more importantly the security updates. I also tried out the V30 for several weeks. I didn't think it's screen was bad, and assumed the XL 2's would be the same.

It isn't. It's way worse. Yes, I'm saying that in my case, the screen on my Pixel 2 XL is worse than the screen in my V30. It doesn't make sense, but it is true. The difference between the Note 8 and V30 wasn't that big, and I even posted about the V30 in that forum, saying as much. But I'm really struggling to get used to the screen of the XL 2. It's not the blue shift. Yes, that's there, but it doesn't impact me. Maybe it's that I'm used to he vibrant colors of Samsung, and even with the new "vibrant" color setting, the Pixel's screen is so flat, even compared to he regular Pixel 2, that it just looks bland and almost all colors look washed out. Compare it to a gen 1 Pixel XL, and it looks completely washed out too.

Maybe i got a bad unit. But if not, the negative hype is very real.unfortunately. I don't think Google would, or even should replace the screen. I do think they should offer more degrees of vibrant color, or more color gamut options. But I've been able to compare the XL 2 to a V30 and a Note 8, and if I ranked them out of 10, I'd give the Note a 10 (remember, it allows you to turn off the vibrant colors if you want), the V30 an 8, and the XL 2 a 4.

As a photographer I'll take the accurate color space of the pixel 2 over the garish Samsung panels any day of the week

To say the issues are nonsense is just trolling so let’s just ignore that

I too was expecting the p2xl to be no worse than the v30 but it really is. I took mine back today, they got another one out which was just as bad, curiously though both were noticeably worse than the display model so maybe there are some good ones out there?

The blue shift on the one I purchased was in your face and imo unacceptable for a £800 flagship device. The normally return adverse Carphone Warehouse had no arguments and never questioned.

These days, Samsung allows you to change it's display colors to whatever you like. If you prefer accurate colors, they offer the Basic mode which uses something very close to RGB, and a lot less vibrant than the other modes. If not, you can go to advanced and pick the levels of RGB.

So the idea that Samsung panels are too vibrant is outdated. They may be too vibrant for some out of the box, but they can be changed to your liking. If Google offered than on the XL 2, I'd be happy. Their vibrant mode is like Samsung's basic mode. They need significantly more variation.

Like I said, I don't need an option to have garish cartoon Samsung colors

I would say that clogging up the forum with yet another screen thread is arguably the same ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There are still folks who go to these forms when trying to decide whether or not to purchase a phone. As long as that remains the case, and many folks are saying that the screen issue is actually a non-issue, it's important for folks to post about this. If it had been fully resolved, no one would bother posting.

You don't. It's in the eye of the beholder obviously. I just showed my daughter the same YouTube video on 75% brightness on both phones. She doesn't know which one is which. She's an artist. She immediately said the Note 8 is "much nicer."

What I'm saying is that at least Samsung gives people the option to switch to the mode you like if they want to. Google is not giving people the choice. They're catering to you and people like you only. They're not catering to others. They could if they wanted to.
