WTF -really need help!!! Green Man

My phone was completely off.

Turned on, I got the big green android logo on the screen, some red text on top, download, and a big green arrow pointing to the power button that said "START"..

I waited a while 'cos I didnt know if I wasnt supposed to do anything. FInally I pressed start (the power button) and rebooted. My OS version is still 4.02. Now my graphics are messed up. The calendar widget I"m using is scrambled and the titles under the apps are black. The apps drawer has titles really messed up...one letter each.


Any ideas as to what is happening???

no. I'm running stock. never tried to root. haven't loaded any new apps either in a few days.

try a battery pull.


if it doesn't work, hard reset it.

If you didnt root and attempt to load a ROM or leak, I would call VZW support.

If you rooted and loaded a ROM, I would flash back to stock.

Ok, this is second problem today. Earlier I had an endless boot animation and I did battery pull. Things worked for a while. I hate to do hard reset..that wipes out everything I installed right??? I will call VZ support first or go to store tomorrow. They probably will do hard reset any way.

you're correct. they'll just do a hard reset. might as well get it done now. most apps cause bugs with the new ICS operating system. i bet it's one or more you have on it.

thanks a lot... I did just another power off and on and am ok, but I know that this will probably happen again if I don't solve the problem.

BTW, what exactly was that screen I got??? was it a reset screen or something? I couldn't make heads or tails of it, because I had a "downloading" thing, a do not cut power message, and an arrow that said "START"...

you inadvertently held the volume button and the power button simultaneously. the green man cometh.


btw, if it's an app, it'll happen again. if it does, hard reset it.

nothing. you hit the power button and it boots up like normal. it's the initial setup screen you saw when you first bought the phone.

The "green man" is the bootloader screen. If you hold volume up + volume down + power button... the phone will do that. Its used to access Recovery and Download mode.

I'm the OP....... This hasn't happened again and I'm not about to try doing it on purpose if it was an accidental key press. The explanation by all the posters seemed right. my graphics etc have returned to normal w/o doing a hard reset. I have uninstalled a number of apps that I realized are redundant or unused. Eagerly awaiting the OTA if it ever comes.

You get that when you push the power button and volume down button at start up.
