"Always on Data"

Tried this and emails weren't being pushed with mail Droid until I woke phone.

I found that WiFi Tether would stop working after a few minutes with "always-on mobile data" disabled. In order to get it working again I would have to (1) disconnect the WiFi connection to my laptop AND (2) stop and restart the WiFi Tether app. With "always-on mobile data" enabled I can use tethering for hours without a glitch.

IDK I have to have always-on mobile data enabled, if I dont my phone turns to poo poo. I get all kind of force closes, sluggish, and it kills my battery. So for me I have to have enabled for my phone. Different strokes for different folks.

Gmail push will, it appears, work with either 'always on data' set, or with Gtalk running. But if both are closed, gmail won't come through until you check it.

Exchange Active Sync seems to work (at least for me) with 'always on data' turned off.

But lots of other things don't, including location detection (actually, this might work if the GPS is on, but the GPS radio uses even more power), weather updates, Pandora, and more.

I leave data always on set, and get 12-13 hours of typical use without recharging. I can put the phone on a charger at some point during the day even on my worst days, so this is plenty to get me through the day. I'd rather have everything work smoothly than get an extra couple of hours of batery life. Especially since I got 2 spare batteries and a charger for $10 from ebay.

You end up with some connectivity problems if you disable the "always on" option.

I unchecked "always on data" and have gtalk closed and i still get my gmail pushed.

So much conflicting information in this thread.

I agree. I appreciate all of the help but it somes like some things work for different people different ways for whatever reason. I guess I will just have to try it and see how it goes for me. I might be ok just leaving it on.

i did not say "logged in". i said "running in the background". in other words - it's OK to always sign out of GTalk and also uncheck "auto sign me in" BUT you will still see GTalk running if you look at "Running Applications" in settings. Gmail uses GTalk as the open line of communication to Google servers. GTalk/Gmail/PUSH is fine as long as you heed my directions. it doesn't need "always enable mobile data" for whatever reason. it also doesn't need you to be logged in to GTalk - but you must let it run in the background if you want PUSH. that's been my experience anyway.

Thank you thank you thank you! I finally get Push email as fast as my Pre. I was sooo annoyed with how I see my Pre getting email and then stare at my evo waiting for it to come in. I've did the turn off mobile data and put Gtalk on my Ignore list for killing apps. :). :D

Alright it is not the always on data checked killing the battery, it's the background data like having twitter apps, facebook apps, ect doing updating frequently.

Over the past few days with Always on Data checked, I had my twitter app shut off especially while at work and turned off Syncing when at work (Cant use phones at work due to regulations against phones) and the battery has stayed very steady and not draining at all.

Overall I end up with 11-17 hours of battery life depending on it's use. If I use it alot including streaming music, it will be less but limiting my use and having twitter, FB off or limit intervals to 1 hour or more does increase the batter.

Touiteur was set to 10mins which may have helped kill the battery life so I'm trying the 1 hour interval, FB is every 4 hours as always and Weather is set to 1 hour.

I do use WiFi when at home and I switch it off when leaving home.

EDIT: and I have ALL mobile IM clients signed out(gchat, aim, fring, qik), no social networks syncing, no stocks, no auto news. WiFi, 4g off, mobile network, gps on.

So you bought this phone that does everything under the sun and reduced it to a flip phone for an extra hour, maybe, of battery life.

Smart.

I leave always on data on, and get between 12 and 16 hours of battery life. I have both gmail and Exchange set to update in real time, weather bug updating hourly, and leave my bluetooth and gps radios on.

Always on data isn't the problem. Load up system panel and Spare Parts, and figure out what's really using CPU and battery.

I haven't noticed a difference in battery life with always on checked. Tried a few days with it on and a few days off. Only difference was gmail was delivered 5-10 min late most of the time and sometimes up to thirty minutes late. So i turned it back on. :)

Well here's what I came up with as a solution - Places that I have wifi - use that, and turn off the 3g radio.

1) I've added widgets to my pages for 'mobile' and for 'wifi'.
2) go into spare parts and change the wifi policy to NEVER turn off. This is counterintuitive, but it actually uses far less battery than the 3g radio. Otherwise after about 20 minutes, the 3g radio kicks back in and is chewing on your battery for you..
3) When near wifi, flip 'mobile' off, and flip 'wifi' on.
4) When leaving that wifi, just revert it.

What widget are you using for Mobile? I only see a widget from HTC for Mobile networks but that doesn't turn off the enable always on mobile data, I don't think there is a widget for that, would be nice if there was....

what kind of battery life do you get when you have everything signed on? I know that when i am signed into just AIM that eats alot of my battery...even when I'm not actually having a conversation...please let me know your settings and typical battery life so that I may compare...thank you

Yeah, I haven't found an IM client that doesn't chew the battery yet. They all prohibit the phone from sleeping, which chews like 4x the idle power.

this is an interesting theory. i wonder if those people who experienced a big battery savings with it turned OFF were ones that had lots of background data apps syncing? and i wonder if those that did not see a big battery improvement with it OFF don't have a lot of those heavy data apps syncing?

but wouldn't the people will the heavy data apps be the first ones biitching that their apps aren't working properly? (since mobile data is turned off - these apps should not function perfectly).

the one downside for me with the OFF setting is my Radio Time app needs to be opened and clicked "PLAY" again for streaming radio after every 5-10 minutes. kind of annoying.

i am still doing testing and have not concluded yet if OFF saves battery. i do know that i get good battery life with the OFF setting but not sure if the OFF is the factor.

i don't have a lot of constant heavy data intensive background apps constantly going - ie FB, widgets, etc.

as another poster mentioned - this may all be a moot point when Froyo comes - as he reported there is no OFF setting he could find.

we shall see.

good luck to all!

SAVOR AND ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!!!

Is this "always on data" setting found in settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks? If so, isn't that only for roaming?

> If so, isn't that only for roaming?

No.

The screen name is "Mobile network settings" and the option name is "Enable always-on data" and the description is "Uses more power on some mobile networks".

Turning it off brings the dialog box, "Attention: Disabling always-on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data."
