Bingo! I finally figured out how to get things straight in my Droid X 2.2 update

This is why I always do a complete phone wipe before upgrading the OS. I've been doing this since when I had a Blackberry.

What's the difference between a "wipe" as in BB vs. Factory Restore as in DX? I've been thinking they are equivalent. No?

Thanks Fabian for all this info. I've done at least 5 Factory Resets and was astounded to discover my apps restored each time no matter what I did. I have to say, though, even this helped smooth the glitches. When I work up the energy to re-install missing apps and update settings for everything one more time, I'll be following your directions.

You mention LP+ and I think it's important: I agree LP+ causes problems on 2.2. I've tried using it multiple times and finally uninstalled it (sniff!). None of the native widgets I tried would work properly with LP+. However, there is so much good stuff in 2.2 that about the only thing missing from LP+ is the revolving dock (which, unfortunately, IS a great loss).

Again, many thanks!! (PS - You would think this would be a lot simpler to do - it's so fundamental to a clean install.)

@ bravozero - Yes, log into your google account normally after you disable the auto restore. Your calendar and contacts will be there and that's fine. The point of this process is to let 2.2 have a fresh start without having old system and app data restored, which is what mucks it all up pertaining to this update.

My only complaint with the 2.2 update on my phone, which is a big one, is that it will reboot by itself sometimes and stick on the motorola logo screen. I restart and it does the same thing. The phone functions as normal but the screen is stuck on the logo... I can even unlock it and power it off with the buttons because I have muscle memory on where it all is.

The only way to correct it is to get lucky with a battery pull. Leaving the battery out for 15 mins seems to help also.

I know this isn't normal and I am about to go back to VZW with the issue.

Would this process described in the first post help with this issue? Re-doing my phone would be a pain in the ***.

Any thoughts about whether the same thing happens on the Droid Incredible? Sense menus aren't the same, but wonder if there's a toggle that should be turned off as well when updating?

Hey, thanx for the tip. I was about to follow your instructions but caught myself... I need to ask:

I'm on 2.2 rooted. Is this going to be a problem? I read that going back to 2.1 isn't an option for rooted users anymore. Maybe I'm missing the obvious but I'd rather be safe than have a bricked X. (I'd die)

Just to be clear, do I disable the backups before doing a factory reset? Or after I skip over the set up screens? I'm still new to the Android platform so excuse my noobish-ness. Just want to make sure I get everything done correctly with no mistakes.

Also, is there a way to DISABLE Google from syncing my contacts? I would just like to use the default app from Verizon. Google duplicates ALL my contacts and its extremely annoying to go through.

Impact on leaked 2.2

Does anyone know what this would do to an X running the "leaked" 2.2? I have not had any issues or bugs and the phone runs fine. The free version of Launcherpro has been running without a hitch too. But if it makes the phone faster, I'm willing to do it. Thanks.

I hate to say this...after performing this operation I went a little over 12 hours without a FC. This morning, an hour after taking my phone of the charger, my battery manager started to FC. :( :(

So, what does this factory reset do? Does it wipe my installed apps? What about my SD Card? Does it wipe my device? Clarify please.

does anyone know if this fixed the weak feedback when using the muti type keyboard. On my wifes phone and mine it is really faint after update. thanks

What "issues" does LP+ cause with 2.2? I'm running it and haven't noticed anything, but perhaps I'm just missing it.

Following the instructions to the letter, my DX is flying along now. Its a pain to reinstall everything, but well worth it. Nice job, Fab!!!!!

Dunno what to tell ya about being rooted and doing this dude. Hopefully someone can chime in, I'm sure there are many more who are in the same boat as you.

After some feedback and some thought I did a slew of factory resets. The thing I kept missing was what order to do what in.

Every time before a reset I would go into privacy--> and uncheck backup my data as well as uncheck factory restore. The problem is, even after a factory reset by default automatic restore is check and all apps downloaded will still start pushing down.

Most of us just automatically log into our gmail accounts. The only way to get a truly clean reset is to NOT log into your google account after a factory reset. Just skip it. When the next screen shows up with choices of accounts to choose from asking you if you're done adding accounts... still, skip it - tap done adding accounts. Once you're fully booted, go to privacy--> you actually have to ENABLE or check off "back up my data" so you can uncheck "automatic restore". Once "automatic restore" is unchecked, then uncheck "back up my data again". Now you can log into your google account and you are finally fresh.

*(you may see a screen again with a check box asking if you would like google to back up your data - uncheck this)
As per usual, please backup any important info such as your pictures and format your SD card right before you do your factory reset.

[Edit]
** Caution** I've found the current version (0.7.9.0) of Launcher Pro to cause issues. I would discourage using it (as much as I like it) until a future update.

So you went a few more step from my original post of this fix, I never thought of not logging into Google and unchecking Automatic Restore option again after restore but it works perfectly...

But I was curious what issues are you having with LP, I have LP+ installed and haven't had any issues? Widget locker had been the only app I have had issues with.

I'm pretty well sure that if you follow the instructions in the first post your problem will go away. Did for me.

Rooted official or leaked? I think if you're rooted you'll just have to re-root afterwards. Likely the same goes for OTA, but then again, I'm not a leaked or root expert.

Just to be clear, do I disable the backups before doing a factory reset? Or after I skip over the set up screens? I'm still new to the Android platform so excuse my noobish-ness. Just want to make sure I get everything done correctly with no mistakes.

You can do it after. Just factory reset, skip all the login/create accout prompts and then privacy-->enable "back up my data", disable "automatic restore", then disable "back up my data". Now you can go to accounts and log in to your google account as you normally would. After you create your account you are again asked if you want your data to be backed up. I would still choose no at this point.

Also, is there a way to DISABLE Google from syncing my contacts? I would just like to use the default app from Verizon. Google duplicates ALL my contacts and its extremely annoying to go through.

Yes, just go to settings-->accounts--> tap on your google account and uncheck whatever you don't want it to sync with.

You were up for 12 hours after the initial reset? That happened to me to (surprisingly for the first time) after first boot after factory reset. One more power cycle did the trick, I haven't seen it since.
