You will backup your current stock rom after you get the custom recovery installed, once it's installed you will boot into recovery and make a nadroid backup, which will backup almost everything on your phone now for safe keeping in case you need to return to how your phone is now.
Installing recovery won't cause you to lose anything.
ok so how do i install a custom recovery and is that why i cant get into recovery mode because i dont have a custom recovery installed yet

Follow the guide on the first page of this thread, then you will have custom reocvery.Right now the only recovery you can boot into is stock recovery which won't let you flash roms.

Did you set up android sdk on you pc? If so then open command prompt and type
Code:
adb shell
then press enter,if it returns $ then type
Code:
su
to get #

i just tried using android terminal and it didn't work nice try though

You can use either command prompt on you pc or terminal emulator from the market both will work.

With terminal it would be "su" instead of "adb shell"

yea im gonna try it again because i forgot to unzip one of the files and I'm thinking thats probably why it didn't workk

still cant get either way to work I'm starting to think that there's something wrong with my phone i remember installing a recovery image from rom manager a while ago but since the optimus isn't listed there i probably downloaded one for a different phone which explains why i could never get it into stock recovery so do i have to delete it from somewhere or something before i try installing a real recovery image?

Recovery should overwrite the other recovery. There could be something getting screwed up cause of you using rom manager to install a recovery ealier but it shouldn't.
When you run the commands what happens?

when i enter adb shell it says device not found

Might be incorrect driver on computer...Had to go rounds with that last night while working a nook color into a usable android tablet. I had to install drivers to the computer, for the first connection to use adb, then install a different set to get nookie froyo running from the sd, then an additional set after getting nookie froyo working on internal memory.

The last set was needed to get adb back, so I could push the oc kernel to the nook. But even with all that, I was able to get everything working in a little over two hours.

ok i found out that i didnt have the drivers installed right on my computer but now when i enter everything into the cmd after the # and i enter reboot into recovery i get stuck at the lg screen and have to pull the battery and whatever i enter into the cmd it repeats back to me (not sure if that suppose to happen or not) except for when i enter

mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
i get
failed on ' /system/etc/install-recovery.sh' - no such file or directory
and when i enter
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
i get
/sdcard/flash_image: invalid length

It should repeat back to you. Sounds like you're sticking on the lg screen because you are only halfway through installation.

mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
i get
failed on ' /system/etc/install-recovery.sh' - no such file or directory

If you get the "no such file or directory" error, just move on...the file is already renamed or doesn't exist, (it doesn't exist on the V9 firmware).

and when i enter
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image
i get
/sdcard/flash_image: invalid length

Did you UNZIP flash_image.zip to the root of your sd card? I'm guessing no. Unzip it, and try again.
