Does it bother you that N5 doesn't have SD card slot?

i also have 320kbps bitrate mp3's , but only 5GB worth of songs.

You're library may not be as extensive as you've come to believe. Now take someone with an extensive library with 6 to 10 times as many songs ripped at the same bitrate or Apple Lossless or FLAC and you have your average audiophile and their mobile collection.

I easily have 50gbs of music alone. I think a lot more since it's spread over several HDDs. But my stuff is various bit rates and formats. I ripped most of my source CDs at the highest variable bit rates. But I also have flac files (lots of them).

And I really have to fix my pc asap because I'm missing my music a lot. I looked at Google Play Music last night and $10 or more for digital copies of albums?????!!!!! No way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I felt nauseated.

I need my music. I've been using the yt bandage but the dl time on my Sprint/Boost connection is maddeningly slow.

You're making me want to go and make yet another backup of my precious library, you are.

It bothers me that they both didn't include an SD card slot AND don't make the phone with enough memory. Either one and I'd be OK.

They want you to use their cloud. They'll have a better handle on your data and be able to make more money long-term if you do.

You could easily have 50GB of mp3 files, especially when ripped at 320kbps (the only bitrate I really want to use in that format).

I used to rip at 160. When 64gb cards came out, I now rip at 192. I decided I could afford to waste a bit of space. ;) It depends on what you use them for. Admittedly as time goes on, I am finding that I might sometimes use them for bluetooth speakers. But that is still very rare. So, mostly I am using my MP3 library with headphones. With 'phones, I don't find it's too bad to rip at, say, 192. It sounds fine. It's not like I can crank it up without going deaf.

And yes, that means I have a LOT of MP3s on the card. I like having most of my library with me. (Still can't fit all the Classical!) I travel a lot. Good luck streaming music in Spain with a USA data plan. ;)

I also have lots of ebooks, some video, and what not. You can never really have too much space. There are always ways to use it. And it's so easy to keep cards backed up and then flip SD cards when you change phones. If SD cards didn't exist, someone would have to invent them. I blame Apple for convincing people that SD cards aren't necessary. :-$

i dont know how u guys can have 50GB+ worth of songs, i guess u guys even save the songs which "are not good" or "you dont like."

maybe u "collect" songs :)

My library is quite a bit larger than 50GB. ...and no, I don't delete songs out of my library that I don't like. Having my entire library with me is the goal. If my entire library is 130GB and I only like 50% of the songs that's still 65GB. Thing is, I like more than 50% of the songs. It wouldn't be surprising if I've been buying music since before many of our members were in diapers. It adds up. :)

I don't think I have any songs I don't like. I have lots of full albums, and within an album there are songs I like more than others. But I don't want to split the album up usually because I like to preserve the artist's context and concept (if I really like the artist).

Maybe it's just that we're old, and we've been listening to music almost since the age of dinosaurs. :)

Precisely. I've ripped most all of the CDs I've bought over the years to carry them in MP3s so I can have portability. Even so, I can't fit most of my classical library.

I will cheerfully admit that I have so much stuff that I can't even play every album 1x per year. Not even close. That said, it's nice to be able to fit your moods and your whims so you can do what you want when you want to do it. For the differential price between 32gb cards and 64gb cards, what's the big deal? Pretty much nothing, so why not? I'd have things to lose if I had to buy a pricey 128gb device (if you find one!) to hold all the stuff I have, plus headroom, and then keep restoring everything and setting up dozens of gigs of stuff again every time I upgraded one. But it's EASY with an SD card, and you only have to do it once, barring some catastrophic failure. (With SD...Easy to restore backups, and easy to maintain backups since the library doesn't change much.) SO, I'm walking along the street in, say, Prague and I hear some store playing an oldie from an album I used to love and haven't thought of in ten years. Hey... It's there. I can play it. Having a big SD card means never having to compromise. Space is cheap and plentiful. ;) For those with smaller collections or those who just don't care, so be it. The world has a phone or tablet for everyone.

Good point from you and Haalcyon; I'm suspecting the viewpoint may be different if you're 23 and possessed of 130 albums, or 53 and possessed of 1500. ;) Stuff does tend to accumulate! I really would like a 128gb micro sd card to come out soon. I can find things to do with the space. ;)

I'm about to switch to a 32gb gadget with no card slot, and I'm not happy about it, but there isn't a prefect device for me on the market.

The cloud isn't a viable option for me, I don't always have service. But I think 32gb will be enough with some care.

You can buy a Meenova microsd card reader, too. I don't have the link handy but it's mentioned an a few other threads.

I feel your pain. The Meenova SD reader works very well, and will work with the Nexus 5 out of the box. All info is in this link.

Jeff, did you have to purchase the Nexus Media Importer to use the Meenova or was the built in OTG support enough?

I own the Meenova unit. It does work, without root. The nexus 5 supports it out of the box. I did a review of it in that link.

You do need to install two apps to access it.

I have a "take with you what you need" approach with smartphones. Even when I've had phones which include SD card slots, I found myself rarely using that storage for anything outside of stuff I rarely used or saw again (almost like digital hoarding). With auto-backup of my photos and videos to G+, I wouldn't hesitate to delete content I don't need stored locally on my phone anymore. For music I usually plan what songs or playlists I want to sync to my phone, let it cache while I'm going through my morning routine, and then it's ready when I head out the door.

So no, it does not bother me in the slightest since 32 GB is plenty for my storage needs. I will say though that cloud based storage is only convenient in markets with carriers that offer unlimited or cheap high data limits. Large local storage and SD card options help alleviate the pain of monthly data limits, so I can certainly see the appeal of it.
