i dont know, when i had my droid x i rooted by typing the commands in this emulator but honestly i dont know enough to say adb is not needed

Just fyi - after I installed the DL09 package from this forum thru Odin, I no longer have the connection issues I was having. I'm happy now! Thanks everybody and I hope this helps somebody ........
Let me know if it works for you too - I had no trouble connecting to my laptop even after multiple reboots and was actually able to root with the one-click method, which I couldn't seem to do on the DI01 package because when it rebooted during installation, it would no longer see the phone and it would fail. So now I'm rooted and have a custom kernel again
